there was a jump cut just where I was hoping to see whether the kayaker attempted to roll, to see if this would still work in a whirlpool (possibly not if the water is pulling the paddle down...?) or whether the wet exit was the plan anyway. Some commentary would have been useful. Glad it spat you out though! Safe paddling!

The wet exit and paddle float renter and roll was the plan. It is possible to roll in that size of whirlpool but your paddle must go in the opposite direction to the vortex…… ie if the vortex is flowing clockwise the paddle would sweep anti-clockwise…it’s a bit like rolling in surf where if you go for a roll it just works because the paddle was on the side that gets carried to the surface by the wave action , if you go for a roll in the whirlpool and your paddle sweep (unless you are 100% c to c) is in the opposite direction to to the vortex it will feel easy…or maybe the paddle is outside the whirlpool vortex either in the main flow or eddy current, then it works just like a regular roll in current unless the whirlpool rotates you and the paddle moves from the main current to the eddy current or vice versa. It’s best to be able to roll on both sides. What often happens is you go for a roll…it either works easily or it starts well then suddenly fails then you swap sides and it works. Sometimes the whirlpool dissipates while your setting up then your back to a regular roll in current. I hope that helps. All the best Kenny
