  • I'm obsessed with John Portman's architecture, especially the massive Hyatt Regency Hotels he designed in the late '60s into the '70s. This is my tour of the Hyatt Regency at O'Hare in Chicago, opened in 1971.

I stayed there when I went on a business trip with my dad when I was about 15 years old. It was around 1974. I loved the rotating restaurant. I remembered it overlooking the airport runway. I didn’t see that view in your video, but it may have changed in the 50 years since then. At that time O’Hare airport was the busiest airport in the world. Or so they claimed.
    Great job on the video.

This was a beautiful modern design when the Hyatt opend in 1971, Rosemont had few hotels back then on River Rd & the Hyatt was the elite. Many famous stars preformed at the The Blue Max Theater inside the Hyatt complete with dinner & drinks. The restaurant that rotates was under a different name at the time, was so famous for prime rib, lobster dinners & tropical drinks with a beautiful view of Rosemont & the Chicago skyline. The Grand Ballroom was host to Weddings & Anniversary events, even had private parties for record producers & recording artist. Sunday buffets were delicious held at the Garden Terrace Restaurant, now operates under a different name. The Hyatt New Years Eve Party was the place to be. Live orchestra & balloon drop. I spent a lot of weekends at the Hyatt back in the 70's & 80's, I met a lot of stars there at the parties. I have beautiful memories of this place. The Hyatt also had a beautiful in door pool under the dome back then too, I spent my Honeymoon at the Hyatt.

I stayed there three days ago. It is for me typical the US from the seventies. I noticed that there is some similarities with the Bonaventure Hotel but it is only after a search on internet that I realized it is the same architect.
