This is just brilliant work Joe! I'm a huge Vinnie/Zappa fan and the drumming on Joe's Garage has always amazed me. I'm still trying to work out the "A Token of my extreme" beat which I find quite confusing -- so Maestro, here's a request to transcribe that beat for us, please :)
I can't play drums, but I wish people making guitar tutorials exhibited the discipline and insight you provided in this video. Also, I can't thank you enough for analyzing this song. There's a black hole on the internet for quality in-depth looks at Zappa's music, and I find anything played by Colaiuta to be particularly bitchin'.
I've just been asked to join a Zappa cover band. I wish you had instructional videos for all of the music I must learn. I like your teaching style. Very thorough. I am more of a prog metal guy so this is going to be a challenge for me. My music reading skills are fair used mostly for reference, not sight reading. Learned to play by ear mostly. Great videos, keep them coming. Thanks-Don
Deep groove -- so fine Excellent work breaking that down. Posting the tab and building up the tempo really brings it all together. And don't forget ... this is the story about bald-headed John
Zappa was a drummer before a guitar player and a great composer too. He's famous because he used to write for every musician the musical score. I love Vinnie Colaiuta as a drummer but I think that this is a Zappa's groove.
Amazing work! I wish I could play this. This is a testament to Vinnie's feel. TSE plays it right, but it still doesn't quite sound like Vinnie. Nobody has those VC hands
i posted this on your blog but i noticed you havent been active there in months so ive just reposted it here. "HI i've been listening to a ton of vinnie stuff from zappa and bootlegged concerts from the late 70's when he was touring with him... and i have bit of a question/request.. there are too fills that i'm really keen on working out but i'm having troubles with. at the beginning of the tune "Pick Me, I'm Clean"from the tinseltown rebellion album he plays a really dope fill. it takes over that entire break and leaves you on the edge because of its abruptness i've been trying to work it out but i cant get it to sound just right. like there's something not happening. i'd like to ask for your insight on that one. the other very colaiuta-esk fill is the CRAZY barrage of drums played at the beginning of the panty rap song off of the same album.. i don't even know where to start on that. i'm not sure if you ever listen to bootlegged concerts from 78/79/ fall 1980 but fills/ breaks like that were vinnie's calling card. thank you for any response and for your time if you manage to read this."
I love this album so much, you really do Vinnie's drumming justice man!

Thanks :) I've never tried to figure that one out. Sounds like another of those that changes every bar. I'll add it to my list!

Deep groove -- so fine

@doublethumpbass89 Thanks Andrew. It is an amazing album and I'm sure I'll do more on it in the future.
Yeah , keep it greasy has such a good drum part too
Some of the best drumming/catchiest songs ever recorded.
Of the many reviews I've read on Joe's Garage, none mention what a danceable album it is!
Great one! Interesting concepts and ideas with the alternate stickings/left hand hi-hats.
Joe, you know Ive been a fan of yours for years now! Keep up the good work!
Yes please! I second "Token of My Extreme!"

I think you may be right, his band could improvise like crazy but for the most part everything was exactly how Zappa wrote it.
Fabulous! Thanks Joe!
Aber beklecker nicht das Sofa, Sofa!
John Phillips Especially if you haven't got the Scotch Guard! D'OH!
Two years of German and the only phrase I remember I learned from a Frank Zappa song
John's got a sausage, yeah man!
Amazing work! I wish I could play this. This is a testament to Vinnie's feel. TSE plays it right, but it still doesn't quite sound like Vinnie. Nobody has those VC hands
