I used to be intimited by patterns. My Mom taught me how to sew when I was younger, so i had to call her and ask her many questions. My first real pattern i used was to make my first son & I halloween costumes. I was Dorothy & he was a little scarecrow. They came out great!! We got so many compliments. Now I know how to use them and they are great when you don't know how to make patterns!
I was intimidated at first as well, when I started sewing years ago. But I found that I wasn't really "reading" the instructions. I wanted to just breeze through, kind of scanning the text, once I slowed down and actually read the instructions, I made many successful projects. Even though I've been sewing for years, I haven't been back at the machine for a while and your videos have inspired me to "dive" back into sewing and get creative again! Thanks!
Let's just say YES!!! I wear scrubs for work and have attempted twice with no help to make them on my own. Got as far as cutting the fabric out then well stumped on how to piece it together that I threw the pattern and fabric away... I have never sewn anything that could be anything! My mom knows how to sew but growing up living in a single parent family she pretty much sewed all her clothes and formal dresses. So when I asked her how and to help she pretty much said I've done all the sewing I
At first I was intimidated by commercial patterns. I think the thing that intimated me the most was the sizing. I had no idea that department stores had what they call "vanity sizing" and this size was not your true size. I was afraid to make something too big or too small and then not know how to correct it and not to be even able to wear it. You tube videos like yours have been awesome. Thanks for posting these!! I learn something new every time I watch.
Oh my! Yes, I'm so intimidated by those commercial patterns! I rarely ever even try. I usually make up my own patterns or watch a tutorial. Most of the time you can find me sewing purses, baby bibs, & burp cloths. I love to sew and creating. Looking forward to watching your other parts to this series. Thanks for your excellent work.
I find patterns scary and am so happy that you are taking the fear out them. I have seen some lovely patterns but do not know where to start and am scared to waste fabric and look like a toddler did the sewing! You have taught me so much and am so pleased that I found your Channel. Keep them coming, please as I need to learn more
It really depends on what I'm making in terms of whether commercial patterns intimidate me or not... and ever since I discovered the wonderful world of online tutorials and videos, I seem to be using those a lot more than commercial patterns.... Thanks for the opportunity to win this pattern! I love love love pj pants and I think this pattern would get a lot of use. They'd be awesome Christmas gifts!!!
I used to sew a lot when I was younger. I was the Home Ec geek in high school, haha! But I got out of the habit of sewing when I went to college and now that I'm in my early 30's I feel very intimidated. But I think something simple like this would be just the thing to get me back on the horse.
Just in one day,,, i watch video about sewing ,,now i made askirt and top for my girl!!! I cat belive it!!!! Thanks to all sewing youtube stars and your one of them!!,,,
I am moderately intimidated by sewing patterns. I think it comes more from beinning afraid of missing a step or miss reading the instuctions then anything else so I like to stick to the super easiest of sewing patterns until I get the hang of what it is I'm reading. I think this series you have will definitly help me get better at reading and using patterns! This first vid was really clear to understand and follow. Can't wait for the next vid!
Yes they do! Since I've been watching all all ur video tutorials I've been getting brave! I have learned ally from u! Excited and grateful u r doing this series! Thanks for taking the time! Can't wait to c ur new daughter! Happy pushing!!
I had to check back to see if you made any current vids since the new baby! (she's adorable! and I know how it can be I have 3 and nursed them all!) Glad you are still posting these vids for newbies like me!
l was intimidated by sewing patterns, but, after tutorial, l feel that l can try to use them without any problems, at school we used these patterns but they were not explained this well because we were only given a piece of paper to trace, cut and then sew. Wonderful clear illustrations. l remember buying a pattern at a charity shop and l never used it, since yesterday l turned the house upside down looking for that pattern, l hope l will find it soon. Thank you, looking forward to the series.
Great explaination of the pattern package. You are doing a great job. I'm going to follow this series (I look at all your videos), even though I've been sewing/Quilting for over 45 years.
I'm definitely intimidated by commercial patterns, because well I'm a new beginner sewer! Reading and understanding the lingo is hard and not knowing where to start sewing! I had to buy some books and learn the basics. But I'm so glad your doing these series!!! Especially this one!! This pattern can make me some scrub bottoms! So I'm excited to start with you!! I hope you can post the video soon!!
Thank you, Vanessa! I am not intimidated, I used to sew. I just feel it was so-so long time ago, that any tutorial will help to bring my memory back. ~ Iryna
I'm intimidated by commercial patterns, because of all the directions and terms used to describe the pattern and how to do it. This video was extremely helpful! I really want to make clothes and become a designer but my mom is SO right when she says I need a pattern to start with :D! It's funny because I was just talking about making PJ's for everyone for Christmas :D.Thank you for posting and explaining in detail, look forward to watching next week!
Vanessa you have so clearly explained what all those confusing numbers on a pattern mean and how they all relate that in just this one part you have deciphered for me something that has always been a scary mystery. Seriously! Thank you for your awesome tutorials. I am a quilter primarily but you have made me want to go out and try making a garment from a pattern now that I am not so completely lost. Again, thank you thank you thank you!
I am a little intimidated because I feel like Im such a begginer it can be confusing, there is a lot to it. I really appreciate your explanation of everything, I think its very helpful. Im a slow learner as well & I think sometimes I just need patience and to go over things more than once. Ive tried a pattern before, but it was in school with a lot of help from the teacher :) So thank you for this series, Im sure it will help me to try again!
This is the most helpful video ever. I’ve been looking for something like this for FOREVER. It’s been years since I’ve used a pattern and I’ve been freaking out recently. Bless
Hey Vanessa, I am soooo excited that you are doing a sewing series, Yay!!! I have always wanted to sew but I am terrified to actually make something to wear. Thanks for going over the back of the pattern. You made everything make sense. I can' wait to get started. All of a sudden you gave me confidence to try. How awesome that u r doing this for us. :)
I am totally intimidated by commercial patterns! The few I have done assume you know way more about sewing or are so confusing in the directions that I just can't figure them out. I'm so happy you are doing this series... thanks Vanessa :)
I am so afraid of commercial patterns! I'm new to sewing and I find trying to make something with one is near impossible without taking a class first. I find using an online picture tutorial or video one is way easier! Thanks so much for taking the time to explain everything!
Yes, I am very much so! ha ha. The reason is most likely because I am very new to sewing and all the women around me are old pros. Very intimidating. Thank you for these tutorials. I won't be intimidated any more. ;D
Hope you & your beautiful family are doing well =) I like when they have a pattern for different sizes. The price of patterns are very high. This is such a good start to this project & a lot of help. No I am not to intimidated by patterns. I need something to go by when I sew. I think there is on time many years ago the pattern was a bet complicated. since I have been watching you I find I do not need a bought pattern to do some things =) BIG HUGS
Good tutorial.... I love the one piece pants pattern... kiss the person who thought it up... I use this type pattern all the time for Lounge pants, shorts, costume pants, etc.... everybody needs a good reliable easy pattern to do pants.
at first I'm intimidated by the commercial sewing pattern. I'm so bad at math and my hand is not steady. so afraid to make mistakes.... but learning from mom's golden knowledge it makes me get a A+ :3 i remember when i was young, back when i was grade 6 we have this sewing project (shorts) i was praised by my teacher. and she asked me who teach you to sew like this, i told "my mom"
Yes i am intimidated by sewing patterns....coz i dont think i can follow the instructions closely....and do fear about the wastage of fabric and sewing materials thus used! But would definitely like to 'see-and-learn'....of course from ur videos.... u surely make those projects look simple and manageable!
I'm glad you did this tutorial!! I am a new sewer and I think I'm ready to use a commercial pattern, but everytime I go to get one I get nervouse and scared, cuz I have never used one. So yes I am intimadated by them. When I look at the back everthing runs together and I put it back lol. Thanks for the video I cant wait till the next one :)
I'd say I am intimidated, because I'm a beginner. However, I can also say that I'm confident that my confidence will get better while following your great tutorials! Thanks so much!
I have never really used them, i learned how to sew when i was 5 and back then the lady who showed me how to, she showed us to make your own patterns and how to hand sew, then when i got my machine i had a friend show me how to make quilts, but i normally test out my own patterns and never really worry to much about store ones.
Thank you very much for your time and tutorials. I made my first pajamas pants for my child using the same pattern and following your great instructions. He loves his pajamas. Thank you.
I actually sewed my first thing from a commercial pattern this summer. I used to think it would be too hard for me to figure out, but it really wasn't that bad after all. One step at a time to getting everything perfect, I tend to go to fast to try to get it done and mess something up, so I just need to learn to slow down.
Hi Crafty Gemini! I stumbled across your channel looking for detailed steps for sewing patterns. I would like to thank you for making a nicely detailed step by step video through a sewing pattern! I have been sewing for years, but never actually used a purchased pattern. I recently purchased one, and immediately was lost with the hieroglyphics in the pattern pieces themselves. After watching other videos, and still being lost, I found your instructions well thought out and executed! THANK YOU!
I haven't used a pattern in so long but I would agree that they are intimidating with what appears to be very confusing directions. I think I will go out and look for this pattern as my 10 year old daughter and I sew projects as much as we can but we have yet to tackle a pattern. Thanks for this tutorial We look forward to it!
thank you thank you thank you for doing a sewing series! I've always been so intimidated to sew clothing (I made a tee shirt quilt last summer) but this makes me want to try! I've never considered using a pattern before because I figured they were too complicated, but a video tutorial will definitely help with that. I like to have written and visual instructions
Thanks Vanessa for doing a tutorial on this!! I have done one pattern piece, and it the only thing I have made my my daughter doesn't wear!!! Intimidated, of course!!! If I knew how to properly read it, but I get so confused at the terminology and the lay outs!! I wish my school would have had home ec!!! I have about 6 patterns that I still haven't attempted, hopefully with you genius I will be able to make a piece to be proud of!!
I'm excited to try this one! I've seen it several times and thought it would be a good start and now I have you to help me along! I'm stupidly giddy right now, lol. They better still have this in stock when I go looking! 8)
Thank you so much for all of the details you gave on reading and understanding a pattern. I never understood how to use a pattern. Thanks to you, I now know how to! Thank you so much :)
I've always seen these commercial patterns at Walmart and I always wanted to purchase them but with no experience in sewing I thought it would be... 1. A waist of time trying to figure out where to begin 2. A hassle trying to understand how to sew and measure everything 3. It would be a waist of money for me after all the frustration. But I'm so glad your doing this, because now it's going to be less frustrating. Once I understandCommercial patterns and sewing will be a thing of the past for me.
So I posted my previous comment before the giveaway details, so I will admit to double posting :D I'd have to say I used to be intimidated by patterns because sometimes, even when I measured twice and cut once, I'd still flubb it up :) But, I've been watching your videos and I am reminded of what Bob Ross used to say, "There are no mistakes in art." Now I just buy a little extra and with some of your video tutorials on quilting, I now know what to do with the pieces left over! :D
I am a little intimidated with the patterns as I haven't sewn from one in a long time. This one looks like it shouldn't be a problem, though. Can't wait to see your next video. Thanks for all your help!!
Yes, I am intimidated, even though I have years of sewing experience. I do great with home decor, quilting and bags; however, garments really SCARE me. I'm always afraid I will put all that work into a garment and then it will look bad on me or not fit. I'm going to try these pants along with you.
This series was extremely helpful. Thank you for posting it. I was hoping to do some pants soon. :) You should do this for all the basic parts of clothing: blouse, jacket & skirt.
Can't wait to see more of your learning to use a pattern series! Even though I've been using them for years I'm sure there's something new I can learn :)
Patterns are a little intimadating to me. I have made a few pillowcase dresses for my daughters, but I would like to start making more complex dresses. Thank you for the great explanation and I look forward to your next videos!
Yes I am intimidated by clothing patterns. I learned to sew watching my mom but when I took formal classes in High School they let us pick the pattern we wanted and of course I got one with set in waist, zippers, etc. All the things that are a nightmare when you are trying to learn. I still remember the panic feeling of not being able to get it done.
@craftymom7 Hey! I'm doing okay.. just ready for the baby to decide to come out an play. It all depends on her when I will get settled enough to work on the next video. I'll keep you all posted via the Crafty Gemini facebook page. Thanks!
This is really GREAT! I just started sewing this yr and have always wondered about all that crazy writing on the back of the pattern...I've seen many explanations on you tube...but nothing was explained as well as you have done..THANKS HUN!!!:)
thanks for the great tutorial and the video edit. I liked that each time you explain something there is a red arrow or frame or picture of fabric to indicate what you talk about so I don't get confused with those other hundreds of numbers on the pattern package or fabrics that are out there.
@chinewmarie No problem! I posted Part 2 already and I'm editing Part 3 right now so look for it in the next few days. The baby is sleeping now but I often find myself NAK (nursing at keyboard). Thank goodness for Boppy pillows! I don't know what I would do without ours. :o)
Commercial sewing patterns seem to be a little bit limiting, not scary. I think that with imagination people can create lots of interesting things from a commercial pattern :)
I really need this series. I have my machine set up. Hopefully going to purchase the material this weekend. Yay I will be jumping up and down if I could complete a garment , to wear. That has been the source of anxiety. I always think I will wear it and it will fall apart. :(
This is sooo helpful and detailed with helpful information...I am determined to learn how to sew and create my own and kids clothes keep it coming please 🙏👌😊
at first i might be intimidated by commercial sewing patterns but with time (if you work your way up from simple patterns upwards) you get the hang of what they want you to do and the instructions become easier to read
very good idea! looking forward to this series/ Am I intimidated by commercial sewing patterns, they can be I think because of my lack of experience, it's not knowing how to read the pattern and how to make it work!
really kewl, thanks for the giveaway opportunity. this is really great, i am watching the video and I already subscribe to your blog. not imitated at all by thee patterns, I use to sew for people years ago.
Not as much as I used to be, but I tend to select simple styles with techniques that I've used before. I'm self-teaching myself serger techniques and am trying to convert pattern directions in order to use my serger. That's a stretch!
I am very much. I dont always understand the terms that are used and I I feel at my age I should. I enjoy your videos because you explain thing as you go but in a way that is not implied that i do know when that is why i am watching.
Yes it seems very complicated and I am unsure of what I need to begin with, how much space I will need and how long the project will take me. Also the pattern paper can be a noobies total nightmare. I have one I bought last year and still havn't got further than taking it out and looking at it with wonder. Good thing I just subscribed to you crafty!! I would like to actually sew something wearable outside the house!
With this Covid sheltering I've decided to learn to sew and your tutorial is so informative. Thank you. Question. Can I add side pockets to this pattern? Is there a tutorial for side seam pockets? I like baggy pants with side seam pockets to hold my cellphone.😐
Can you do simplicity pattern 2184 skirt A, B step by step? I have it and would like to try it with your step by step guide. I made matching pajama pants for my husband and son and love your step by step guide. Thank you so much.
hi how are u? i dont sew pants lol but next videos dont forget the closed captions smile...thank u i really appreciate it very much.. u better get good rest before baby comes smile.have a great day?
finally someone talking about nap, so please again, the nap is like "the other side" of the fabric?if i have a fabric with one side printed and the other like the back side, that would be the nap? (the back side)
This pattern is now 9132 :-) I work at a big box fabric place and have been telling customers about your video for YEARS! Thank you so much!
Good to know! Thanks so much for the update and for spreading the sewing love!
Your welcome. Take care of yourself and the precious little one, soon to arrive.
Many blessings to both of you.

I've always seen these commercial patterns at Walmart and I always wanted to purchase them but with no experience in sewing I thought it would be...
1. A waist of time trying to figure out where to begin

But I'm so glad your doing this, because now it's going to be less frustrating. Once I understandCommercial patterns and sewing will be a thing of the past for me.
What a wonderful tutorial. I haven't sewed garments in years and loved this clear, simple refresher!
Not yet. But I'll add your suggestion to my list. Thanks!
@bigcaat I'm working on Part 2... coming soon! Just starting to get back in the swing of things,. Thanks!
Great video! I use to sew years but stopped. This video was very helpful in how to read a pattern.
Thanks for subbing! Glad you enjoyed the tute. Have fun!
No problem. Glad to help!
thanks for the great tutorial and the video edit.
@390kylie I've included the link in the video description below the video.
at first i might be intimidated by commercial sewing patterns but with time (if you work your way up from simple patterns upwards) you get the hang of what they want you to do and the instructions become easier to read
Thanks! ... and thanks for subscribing! :o)
I just watched all three parts. Insanely helpful and succinct.
Great video. Very clear instructions. Thanks, can't wait to watch part 2 & 3.
very good idea! looking forward to this series/ Am I intimidated by commercial sewing patterns, they can be I think because of my lack of experience, it's not knowing how to read the pattern and how to make it work!
Wow. You uploaded this awhile ago. I am learning to sew and bought this "Easy" pattern from Hancock recently. Thanks for the video!
really kewl, thanks for the giveaway opportunity. this is really great, i am watching the video and I already subscribe to your blog. not imitated at all by thee patterns, I use to sew for people years ago.
Not as much as I used to be, but I tend to select simple styles with techniques that I've used before. I'm self-teaching myself serger techniques and am trying to convert pattern directions in order to use my serger. That's a stretch!
@aao4o I included a link to where you can buy the pattern in the description box of this video. Hope that helps.
@shyanha lol. Yea, its a great project to start with. Have fun and let me know how it turns out for you. :o)
I am very much. I dont always understand the terms that are used and I I feel at my age I should. I enjoy your videos because you explain thing as you go but in a way that is not implied that i do know when that is why i am watching.
@glora01 Definitely! Save yourself some money and spend it on supplies & cute fabric instead. :o)
Glad to help! Happy sewing! :o)
Aw. Thanks!! Stay tuned for more... :o)
You just helped me so much with your fast and excellent video. Thank you thank you thank you!
With this Covid sheltering I've decided to learn to sew and your tutorial is so informative. Thank you. Question. Can I add side pockets to this pattern? Is there a tutorial for side seam pockets? I like baggy pants with side seam pockets to hold my cellphone.😐
@jennb752 I would because you can always make the pants smaller but you can't make them bigger! :o)
Hey Vanessa. How r u ? Just wanted to know when you will start the sewing series. Just wanted to be prepared lol
Can you do simplicity pattern 2184 skirt A, B step by step? I have it and would like to try it with your step by step guide. I made matching pajama pants for my husband and son and love your step by step guide. Thank you so much.
We just found your video and it gave so much info. Thank you!
Yes, they intimidate me! I am not sure if I am doing it right!
This was super helpful. Thank you!
