  • In this video I show you how to paint a coastal seascape featuring cliffs and the ocean around the south coast of Guernsey, a small island located in the English Channel.
    In the video I will explain the following:
    1. Composition
    2. Colours and brushes
    3. Blocking in the painting
    4. Adding detail
    5. Adding final details
    I explain how to paint the cliffs and how to make the foliage on the cliffs recede in the distant landforms. I show you how to paint the sea and simplify the complexities of the moving water in a manner that still gives the appearance of a realistic ocean. I explain how to get the tonality of the painting correct, show you how to mix a few colours and much more.
    A special thanks to my mother Wendy Pratt who gave me some footage of Icart Point as I forgot to film the area when I visited Guernsey last year!

    What I especially enjoy about your video is the confidence with which you make each stroke. I know too well the amount of painting required to get past the "God, I hope this does what I want it to", to the point of "I place this paint in this manner with this brush because I know what it is going to do. I am a subscriber and greatly appreciate your "sharing" of your talent and experience.
    Thank You!!!

    Hi Samuel, I really enjoyed this video. I've watched several times now! I found your video extremely helpful for preparing to paint a photo of a coastal scene that I snapped while hiking in Newfoundland, Canada. I am new to painting and needed instruction on how to begin, or plan a painting. In previous paintings, I just proceeded in the best way I knew how but lacked any real method. I needed a general approach; a formula on how to get paintings started, i.e. taking photos for potential paintings, sketching, colour study, blocking in, adding details...also your explanations about saturation and focal point. Your process really gave me the structure that I was looking for! Thank you!

    A new fan here too Sam, you explain everything so well. This tutorial is extra special as I used to live in the Channel Islands too. I painted the Cliffs of Moher last year on a visit to Ireland...I will go back to it now and desaturate some of my greens. Noticed you didnt add any reflection of the cliffs in the sea? You make painting look do easy haha😀 debs in Spain

      Thanks Debbie, where in the Channel Islands did you live? The islands are so beautiful. For this painting in the photo reference I used the sea was quite rough. Actually the footage of the area was filmed by my mum for the video. I got her to message it to me 😊

    How do you get away with mixing so little paint at a time? Each of those mixes looks like it's just enough for a single stroke.

    Hey, Samuel!
    Very nice painting. But the perspective of the cliffs doesn`t look quite right. The rocks seems to move to steep towards the viewer.
    And the waves are too similar from front to the middle, so it looses a little of the depth effect.
    Love your videos, and some of your paintings are really nice.

      Hi Eleo, thanks for the feedback. The painting is of the view from Icart Point in Guernsey and it's a high vantage point. I didn't make the sea too detailed as it was a small painting and I didn't want to ruin the composition. Sometimes you can have too much information and detail in a painting.
      Thanks for watching
      😀

    • @eleojay401
      @eleojay401 4 года назад

      Yes, thats one of those things that is very difficult for most artists; not get bogged down by focusing too much on the small details. I must admitt I have a tendency to do just that.
      I don`t know if you have seen Vladimir Volegov in action, but he is really a magician when it comes to creating fantastic effects just by giving the viewer the illusion (of whatever) with very bold and non-detailed brushwork.
      Do you ever feel stressed when painting? Would be cool if you could make a video about how you relate psychologically to the painting prosess.
      You seem like a supernice guy with a relaxed constitution, but I also sence a vulnerability in your personality, so it would be interesting to hear you talk a little bit about yourself in relation to your artistic journey.
      Keep up the great work, Samuel!
      Eleo:)

    You do such a good job at teaching ! Hey Sam I find it hard to know the proportions of the mixes that you’re refer.to . Not many videos out there that go into detail on mixing and how much to mix with each other.. So for example when you do highlights in the clouds titanium white transparent yellow and burnt Siana how much do I mix ? it seems like you use formulas maybe you could do a video that covers the different mixes that you mostly use? That would help a ton ! 🙏

    Thank you for your time freely given uploading your great painting (cliff scenery is similar to my local coastline near Brixham, Devon) I am in my mid eighties and rarely give the easel an airing these days but continue my art interests digitally. Do you indulge painting studies or tutorials with a computer these days?

    Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful painting tutorial video. Sam, do you paint with acrylics ? Color mixing tips are so helpful and I can watch over and over !!!

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks Christine, glad you enjoyed the video. I used to paint with acrylics a long time ago but once I switched to oils I never really used them again. I just find oils much easier to paint with, but thats not to say you couldn't paint this in acrylic, the colour mixing principles would be exactly the same.

    I’ve been painting with acrylics for 6 years. I just finished my first oil painting without a lot of proir knowledge of oil paint. I noticed you just mention using paint thinner during your “sketching” on to the canvas. Do you thin out your “blocking” layer or undertone layer? I’m just trying to learn good techniques for landscape oils, your style is very intriguing to me and I would like to know more details about your work.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Haley, sorry for my late reply. I use liquin original throughout the painting, it's an alkyd resin that improves the flow of the paint and speeds up the drying time. I only use thinner for mixing the burnt sienna or burnt umber underpainting in which I also mix liquin with it too. There are all sorts of mediums you can use with oil paint and I like liquin for the convenience of the fast drying time, the only downside is the butanone oxime in liquin is toxic so that is something you need ton be mindful of. Paint in a well ventilated area.
      When painting in oils keep in mind the 'fat over lean' principle, meaning start with thin layers and build up thicker layers on top as this will help to prevent cracking. Oil paint can take many months to really dry properly and the paint moves as it does so.
      I hope this helps. Feel free to ask me more questions if you need more help. 🙂
