I’ve been working with pastels for the past year and having some success but I’m leaning toward open acrylics. They stay wet for a day or so. Your work is amazing and inspired me to order some👍
Sam your landscapes and seascapes look a lot like where I live, Big Island, Hawaii. Your palette colors work well for me here. I’m so glad I found you. I’m doing a marathon of your videos. Thank you for describing your process so throughly. You are a gift to those of us who love plein air
Thank you for sharing your expertise and knowledge. I love painting mountains and tonal landscapes. You are so blessed to live and work in such a lovely place. 😺
Excellent tutorial!!... Very enjoyable to watch you paint while making comments and describing your colors, and mixes, etc. Very generous of you to share your knowledge and talent. Looking forward to watch your next video.
Thanks. All of my videos are available as downloads only. However I do have the Mountain Valley video on DVD which is available from Richard Robinson's website called My Painting Club. Here is the link. mypaintingclub.com/lessons/182-Mountain-Valley-DVD
2:02 wow thought i was watching Clint Eastwood in a fistful of dollars for the moment :) A very enjoyable video and from watching your other videos i love your clever compositions where you use the scenery and objects as props to guide the eye around the painting.
Thank you so much for this fantastic video, your beautiful painting and your commentary! So informative, educational and inspiring, and gives me courage to try and paint along! 😊
Great to watch your work. Inspiring. Learning lots of tips. I live in Wisconsin USA in a beautiful area of bluffs around the Mississippi River. Think I will do some outdoor work this spring. You are in a wonderful area for artists for sure!
Thanks Dianne, it sounds like you live in a nice area. I lived in the USA myself for two years but I never got to visit Wisconsin unfortunately. You should definitely paint outside as soon as you get the opportunity 😊
WOW . 😀 very beautiful place. I love this painting. I wish I could paint like you . . . Thank you so much for this video. You always inspire me to paint beautiful landscapes . This lnformation is really very much helpful for me . .. 💙 so thanks again.
Samuel Earp Artist eagerly waiting... I have a question for you Sam. Is there an alternative for quinacridone magenta? I couldn't find quinacridone magenta in my local art supplies store.
Lol crack me up every time I watch the video when you make reference to the cowboy hat😆 beautiful painting Sam . Very nice on explaining details. Learning a lot from you on this journey
Thank you for your videos, they are so helpful and I'm starting to see improvement iny paintings. I was wondering if you could show us how you do a larger scale painting from your smaller plain air work. I would love to see that! Mark
Thanks Chuck, we don't get snow in the way you would in the UK or the northern USA but the mountains definitely get snow and we do get one or two snow falls to ground level each year where it settles. It usually causes chaos because a lot of people aren't used to driving in the snow (unless they're going up the mountains to ski of course).
Samuel Earp Artist no problem, I just started painting, so I'm watching all the great guys, I had watched all @Andrew Tischler videos and he mentioned you in one of his videos, so I had too watched your work, and also @chulk is here too. I hope one day be as good as you guys are.
Sam I really enjoyed this one! Very nice as well as informative.. Ive been looking at plein air kits for a few months now and plan to get out soon and try in my area.. Burnt umber is my best friend.. Lol I also use it under most all of my paintings! 😊 I think the bug wanted to become part of your art! Lol I think they actually found a bug in one of the old dead guys paintings.. 😂 So funny!! Your area is beautiful, I hope to visit one day! I think Austria would be beautiful as well.. Have u ever been there before? Thanks again for all your help and sharing your art!! Its awesome!! 😊✌️🖤
Thanks Cristy, thats interesting about the bugs being found in the Van Gogh painting, I can see how that would happen. With regards to outdoor painting easels, I'd definitely recommend Strada easels. I have been to Austria once, I went to Vienna in 2005, I used to work at Kew Gardens in London and I attended the Botanical Congress that was being held there that year. Not long after my year and a half stint a Kew I got into arboriculture and worked as a tree surgeon for years.
Great video as always. Thank you very much for sharing. You talked a lot about salt flies but you never paint them. Are they like power lines? They just don't add to the piece and tranquility?
Thanks Steven. I was talking about sand flies, you get a lot of them in New Zealand especially around water. Sand flies are small, they bite you as they drink your blood and they itch like hell. They are like mosquito bites, very annoying when you are plein air painting and they can also stick to your painting 😬😂
When painting outdoors the easiest way is to paint your dark values first. I painted this a long time ago so I can’t remember if I carried out the same approach with this particular artwork. When you paint your darks first it doesn’t it then doesn’t matter if the light changes.
I don't like to harm insect life or other natural wildlife, so I won't use oil paint outside. I make drawings and color notes which I can later use with reference photographs.
Vincent van Gogh had a bug in his painting, it was a cricket!! It's still visable in the painting today.. just can't remember which painting it was ??👍🎨😋
Thanks Marcus, I keep the videos shorter for RUclips but I will be doing longer much more in depth videos in future. Painting is my life and I ultimately want to make a living from it full time, it is my intention to sell videos from my website, I'll keep them really cheap and I will always continue to provide free content on my RUclips channel and my website.

Thanks mallu muttu 🙂
Very nice! Love the trips outside, turned out nice too. Does the snow stick much down there or does it melt away fairly quick?
Thanks Chuck, we don't get snow in the way you would in the UK or the northern USA but the mountains definitely get snow and we do get one or two snow falls to ground level each year where it settles. It usually causes chaos because a lot of people aren't used to driving in the snow (unless they're going up the mountains to ski of course).

Thank you so much 😊
how do you maintain the lighting conditions as sun travels ....will you keep a photograph ?
When painting outdoors the easiest way is to paint your dark values first. I painted this a long time ago so I can’t remember if I carried out the same approach with this particular artwork. When you paint your darks first it doesn’t it then doesn’t matter if the light changes.

I'll have to find out what this painting is 🙂
Van Gogh’s Olive Trees had a small grasshopper. The Wheat and Cypresses had some wheat grains!!
