His role as Rodney in Clockers always sticks out to me bc he such a convincing psycho that go from compassionate to ready to kill you in a split second.
Delroy Lindo captured the essence of West Indian Archie perfectly. His inherent menace and barely suppressed violence was ever present, through a thin film of civility and urbanity. And yet there was a confidence and cockiness there as well….very authentic!
Mr. Lindo was West Indian Archie Like Don Cheadle was Raymond "Mouse" Alexander in Devil In A Blue Dress. I had the honor of meeting Mr. Lindo on the Warner Brothers lot. He autographed my Malcolm X movie poster that I hang proudly in my Man Cave.
Spike was also intelligent so he was not going to allow just any Black person on the set. I know no one cares about this interview in this country but it has a lot of meaning.

That's right. We pretty much started what yt folks call the lottery. White people couldn't figure out how to legalize it at the time so it was deemed illegal. When they figured it out, it's now legal smh.
This is why I love Spike’s work! Seeing School Daze as a young child was amazing but to watch all of his films in my 20s and 30s made me respect him even more!
Had an opportunity to meet this brother in Los Angeles. Culver City actually. I was out there celebrating my birthday and he was at the restaurant. Cool dude.
15:35 what Delroy says here was extremely well said. This hearkens back to the comments Spike made about Tyler Perry and how Tyler got very angry with him over it. I mean the man did Bamboozled, it spoke exactly what he said. I mean look, Lee even stated that Tyler is a very rich man but he didn’t make I in a way that you would hear Delroy speaking in such a way about.
I had actually met him at a basketball game one time and he is a nice and friendly guy man he is very very intelligent with his films that he knows exactly how to write anything down he is a genius
Of course I loved his work in Crooklyn as Mr. Carmichael and he showed us all a loving black father who had to step up up for his family after his wife passed away.
Absolutely love this wonderfully passionate interview. Delroy Lindo, with ease, employs a requisite vast vocabulary to almost poetically describe his feelings to the audience. It is done without arrogance or prideful display but in understanding the very power of words, especially if wielded with humanity. Without hesitation, one can feel that the many years have not diminished Delroy’s love and commitment to his art as well as to ‘We who are darker than blue.’ I see why the gifted pen of esteemed playwright, August Wilson, found him on stage. An agreement of two men regarding the extraordinary soul of those with muted voices.
West Indian Archie taught a young Malcolms to pay attention not only to numbers, but to his surroundings. And to never hit a lady ✅️✅️✅️✅️✅️When Malcolm came to visit after his stroke, Malcolm paid it back to him ..Dam, now I wanna see tha movie. Again...
When I first watched the movie I didn’t know what he was going for either. Wasn’t until when I got older became knowledgeable of what happens when you suffer a stroke I said he’s a master at his craft.
Amazing, ultra memorable, world class performances by ALL actors in this film with Denzel being the beacon of excellence to lead the way. Arguably, Spike Lee’s greatest cinematic work ever.
His ( Washington)role playing the American Hero, Malcolm X should’ve won Mr. Washington an Oscar. Instead he won for playing a corrupt cop. Shame on Hollywood and shame on Washington for accepting. Spike Lee’s Masterpiece Malcolm X was 🔥. Doesn’t get better than this.
Which he should’ve won an Oscar. This is why I hate Hollywood. But love Daniel Day Lewis and Viggo Mortensen. Two of my favorite actors, they do only what they want.
Malcolm X is a favorite film of mine . Love Spike Lee's films. Crooklyn, Do The Right Thing, Summer of Sam, He Got Game. Also a few others I can't recall. Spike is overdue to release another film . Salute to Delroy . 😎🎭✌️
Malcom X should’ve won multiple awards. No disrespect to Al Pacino….Scent of a woman didn’t hit the way this movie did. I was disappointed to found out that the Oscars overlooked Spike’s brilliant movies.
They stole an Oscar from Denzel because they stole two from Al in 73 & 74. Google the best actor category from 73 & 74. Yes Denzel was robbed & it was due to old ass Oscar voters screwing Al Pacino in 73 & 74.
We all know they didn't simply overlook Malcolm X. It was blatant and unapologetic racism. We all know Malcolm X deserved all the accolades. However it doesn't diminish the masterpiece Malcolm X is.
Mr. Lindo spoke with the color and beauty of the film and has given it justice. He is a craftsman! Whatever your craft is he represents the passion you may have for it. Remember the quote Dr. King made about sanitation workers?
Ppl dont understand how important spike was to the culture. W/O him, we would have never gotten a malclom X movie. The big studios didn't want to get behind it, which is why he asked for help from his celebrity friends and peers to help fund it. Amerikkka is still against Malcolm X
This is Spike Lee’s cinematic epic about a man’s story that had to be told this masterpiece coming after SHES GOTTA HAVE IT (l(1986) his feature film directorial debut) SCHOOL DAZE, (1988) his first film for a major studio DO THE RIGHT THING (1989) MO BETTER BLUES (1990) and JUNGLE FEVER (1991) all the above and X marked his first chapter as a major filmmaker who influenced as well as inspired the likes of John Singleton
Redd Foxx died in 1991, possibly while the film was still in production, and he was filming his final series, The Royal Family, when he collapsed on set and died hours later.
I wish I shake hands and hug everyone involved with with making this film. Every actor and actress was performing at master class level. Spike captured the feeling and look of all the eras this film covered. You feel like you are there with people on screen. I cry every time I watch this movie. So powerful and one of the best films ever made. Malcolm X was one of best human beings to ever walk this Earth. May Allah bless him and his family.
Malcolm X by Spike Lee is definitely my favorite movie of all times. My parents took me to see it when I was a child/ preteen, and it changed my life. I have watched and continue to watch this movie more than I have watched any movie in my life. I'm a movie buff and I put this above Glory which was an amazing film also. However this is a must watch for anytime... Especially for Black History Month.
the rso scene is one of my favorites in the film, so much depth & humanity. Delroy did an academy award winning performance, West Indians are very proud people and indeed there is nothing more important to a West Indian man than his "rep"!
He was 39 playing that role. The part where Malcolm came back and all of Archie's surrounders were gone, and was living in destitution and disablement. The character helped him exercise his arm, I was a teenager when I saw that and that's one of the scenes that stuck with me. Delroy Lindo is not underrated, underutilized maybe but the man arguably has more talnet than Denzel. He's the reason I watch Da Five Bloods over and over again. Thank you for this interview, I've never seen it.✊🏾
Delroy Lindo is a underrated actor.
Very. I thought he should've been nominated for best supporting
He’s terrifying in “Clockers”. Brilliant actor man.
@jeremylawson6648 That was a wild role for sure I just like the cop he played in Gone in 60 seconds 😎
He ABSOLUTELY is!
Superbly!😊
Delroy Lindo’s interpretation of West Indian Archie was a vital part of this movie’s greatness
Yes yes
Agreed
Extremely. Especially the final scene. Always does something to me.
True that and Red put that number in
Truth 💯💯💯

This man's talent is sooooo slept on
Delroy should have won for Five Bloods. Generational actor and up there with Denzel, & Jeffrey Wright on Rushmore
Couldn’t agree more with this whole thing.
5 Bloods was a garbage movie tho.
He carried that film
Facts I was finna say he’s acting was amazing on there
I thought the same thing
West Indian Archie. Is not only a cold name but also a cold blooded character. Delroy and Spike killed it.
@@kdm313 Played that role effortlessly💯
Was it? He was West Indian. And his name was Archie. So they called him West Indian Archie. How is that cold or even very creative? 😂😂

The book did it for me ❤️🖤💚
saw this around the same age and i have never been so proud to be black after watching it
I was 9 or 10. It changed my life too. It’s wild though because I was in my mid to late thirties when I finally read the book.
That last scene when Malcolm visited west Indian Archie is deeeeep omg😮😢😂
Phenomenal interview and Delroy Lindo is a truly exceptional actor. 👏🏾

A special shoutout to Al Freeman Jr for an excellent portrayal of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad
His role as Rodney in Clockers always sticks out to me bc he such a convincing psycho that go from compassionate to ready to kill you in a split second.
He is one of the goats for sure
And even with the power he had in that movie, there was still someone willing to blow his brains out if he didn’t do what he was told.
Rodney Little was the extension of whom Malcolm Little (Malcolm X) could’ve become had he never left Harlem
Delroy Lindo captured the essence of West Indian Archie perfectly. His inherent menace and barely suppressed violence was ever present, through a thin film of civility and urbanity. And yet there was a confidence and cockiness there as well….very authentic!

this was so captivating.

Delroy Lindo stole scenes from Denzel in that movie. Goodness, loved his character, “West Indian Archie”.
Especially the last one when Malcolm found West Indian Archie destitute and partially crippled. Lindo nailed that one.

Mr. Delroy Lindo, is a great story teller and I truly admire his work on the screen...
He is so serious in making movies I would have never thought he would be approachable!
this man has looked the same for my entire 48 years... much love for him.
This guy has been one of the finest actors in the industry for years. I love him.
If I ever had a chance to do any episodes of my life, I'd want Delroy Lindo to play my Father. Real talk..
I wish Redd Foxx had a cameo character in Malcolm X they ran the streets of Harlem together they also worked at a fried chicken spot in Harlem!

Great interview. An unanswered question for me is how come he declined Do The Right Thing?
