One of the best ways to demonstrate my approach to problem solving at the piano is with the chromatic scale (From my article on the chromatic scale and fingering maps: / chromatic-scale-63167319 )
Pianists use note clusters and hand positions to physically chunk groups of notes. This process of chunking is especially important for memorization, or when pianists are playing something technically demanding. More ergonomic gestures and economy of motion helps conserve energy and prevents injury.
Practice goals:
Learn this fingering (1234,123)
Practice playing the chromatic scale, ascending/descending from different notes
Learn in the left hand
Improvise direction changes
Play/improvise with both hands
