Excellent. Next, I would like to see you take a complex tune (Stella by Starlight) or something like that and break down the harmonic structure (key centers, deceptive resolution, modal substituion) and your approach to improv on a more complex structure.

@@jazztutorial one thing I’ve wanted to learn is how to play a non jazz song in a jazz framework. Take a song like Happy Birthday or Yesterday or whatever and show how it can be reframed in a jazz style. Show how you can vary the degree of complexity you take in a jazz approach. Can any song be reframed like this? Can Metallica be re-interpreted? Do you have to stick with the standard jazz chord progression through out or can you swing back and forth to suit the original song? Are there any techniques to employ to make sure you are taking the audience with you as you improvise around the root melody?
I am a classical pianist & composer and I am so interested in playing jazz. I improvise everyday, sometimes it sounds jazzy sometimes very classical and sometimes quite contemporary. Your videos and sheet music help me a lot. Thank you very much dude, I am just so grateful to you. You know how to teach!

I like jazz but personally I would like to go in the classical pathway
@@splice_joe381idk video yet, but me i take a scale, usually it's gonna be mimor or change a scale for it's sound more classical, like scale C, i change E to E flat and A to A flat and everything sounds good, for the melody of the left hand i do arpegios or chords/break chords, right hand just do everything you want in the scale, trille, chords, some chromatic if you want, octave. I hope it would help you, if you have any question, i can try to answer it. (And sorry for my bad english, im french)

This was an absolutely fantastic dive into improv. I have about 13 years of classic local music training but after starting jazz this was the one thing really holding me back. This is super helpful for making it sound great while still letting you understand the theory!

If you are serious about learning more, I highly recommend Julian's paid classes! I've done them myself, but I realized I wasn't quite ready for the time commitment. You are the best jazz teacher on the Internet and if I was a younger man who had lots of time on his hands, I would endeavour to try and learn to improvise as you teach it but I always got stuck on trying to play inverted chords quickly enough that I gave up in frustration. Still great to watch you though. 👍

I'm new to piano, and of course therefore new to jazz piano. I'm finding your videos tremendously helpful. I like to get some understanding of the scope of what is to be learned and "mastered" eventually. Just the way my mind works. Thanks for the videos. This is a very important lesson for people trying to get that bebop sound but stuck in playing scales. I wish I had a video like this when I was learning these ideas, would have saved me a lot of time with just playing the major scale or modes not looking at chord tones or chromaticism
This tutorial was the BEST!!! I already have the chops to do a lot of damage with this, I just never knew the jazz formula and honestly didn't know there was one. This is MIND BLOWING!

This is awesome man. I wish I had seen these types of tutorials a bit sooner haha. Every time I played a solo in my high school band I would always just use the blues scale. Yeah sure it sounds good, but it doesn’t always work and it kinda gets boring! Your tips about the “whole step above” and the “half step below” and the “enclosures” were so good. I’ll really try and master these as it they sound so good when you play them!
I just learned how to form the extended harmony from the natural key and learned and understood Jazz Thank you very much.
