Excellent. Next, I would like to see you take a complex tune (Stella by Starlight) or something like that and break down the harmonic structure (key centers, deceptive resolution, modal substituion) and your approach to improv on a more complex structure.
I've been a classical pianist for over 10 years now, and I've always thought jazz is impossible. This video was so perfectly clear and simple I was shocked at actually succeeding to implement this. Thank you so much!
I learned more in twenty minutes than in several hours! You are a genius at teaching! Everything seems so easy when we listen to you play and explain with passion how to do it. Really, what a talent!
Finally!! Somebody made jazz understandable for me. You, my friend, have opened up a whole New World to me. I’ve been playing piano for 50 years, and I’ve always wanted to play jazz, but I would get confused anytime I started. So once again, thank you.
@@jazztutorial one thing I’ve wanted to learn is how to play a non jazz song in a jazz framework. Take a song like Happy Birthday or Yesterday or whatever and show how it can be reframed in a jazz style. Show how you can vary the degree of complexity you take in a jazz approach. Can any song be reframed like this? Can Metallica be re-interpreted? Do you have to stick with the standard jazz chord progression through out or can you swing back and forth to suit the original song? Are there any techniques to employ to make sure you are taking the audience with you as you improvise around the root melody?
Quite an amasing teacher, how he's able to simply the concepts across for the very beginner to be able to understand. Many other jazz pianist on RUclips are brilliant players but simply just don't make the grade for teaching and yet they want you to join their course and waste your time. This man can play and can also teach. I'm blown away how I can take this away and implement it. I've learnt so much already and just can't thank him enough.
The Best Tutorial Video illustrated Jazz improvisation for beginners I've watched so far. I'm always interested in jazz improvisation but not knowing how to start with. Many tutorial videos are just too difficult or vague to understand for beginners. Thanks to this video, I've really learned a lot!!👍🏻👍🏻
I am a classical pianist & composer and I am so interested in playing jazz. I improvise everyday, sometimes it sounds jazzy sometimes very classical and sometimes quite contemporary. Your videos and sheet music help me a lot. Thank you very much dude, I am just so grateful to you. You know how to teach!
Hey ik this comment is one year ago but if you got any good videos that teach classical improv please tell me 🙏 I like jazz but personally I would like to go in the classical pathway
@@JoelElias2_1idk video yet, but me i take a scale, usually it's gonna be mimor or change a scale for it's sound more classical, like scale C, i change E to E flat and A to A flat and everything sounds good, for the melody of the left hand i do arpegios or chords/break chords, right hand just do everything you want in the scale, trille, chords, some chromatic if you want, octave. I hope it would help you, if you have any question, i can try to answer it. (And sorry for my bad english, im french)
Thank you my dear friend. I'm frenh. I don't speak english. I Côme from Island of Réunion in Indian Océan (proximité of Madagascar) My Département is French. Merci infiniment. You are à véritable pédagogue. Thank you very much. I am Flutist and your l'Essonne is 👍👋 A bientôt. JEAN-PAUL
If you are serious about learning more, I highly recommend Julian's paid classes! I've done them myself, but I realized I wasn't quite ready for the time commitment. As soon as I can, I plan on re-joining! The lessons are so clear, and honestly just show the insane amount of time and effort that he's put into making jazz a lot easier to understand! Thank you!
I concur. I started the paid classes but had to drop out due to work commitments. I plan on rejoining as soon as I am able. Julian is an excellent pianist and teacher.
Wow! I have been trying to get jazz improv under my fingers for years with lessons that were over my head and you made it so simple.I sat down at the piano after this short lesson and got immediately. Thanks
Thank you Filip! If I'm going to teach a subject, I want to aim high and do the very best I can imagine. I'm so glad this one helped you. Let me know if have any future lesson requests
thank you! i feel like i found this video at the perfect time for myself. not too complex, but just advanced enough to teach me something crucial at my knowledge level! thanks :)
i'm watching this for the second time and holy smokes i cannot stress enough how much the half step approach and the enclosure approach has helped me. thank you so much
Julian Bradley's videos and website is so practical and easy to follow. Thankyou ! I am still happily working through the PDF: " 29 Sweet Jazz Piano Licks". For the longest time I thought RH improvisation required references from the melody with a few blue notes here and there. Julian Bradley's Improvisation Video with chord tone soloing, approach notes, etc, is packed with very useful exercises that will keep me going for a while, ideally becoming fluent in any key! I am so glad I found your video, it's exactly what I've been looking for. Thank you so much!
I think Julian just took me from a beginner jazz pianist to a professional in 19:45 seconds... God Bless you sir for your kindness and sharing with us!! Gonna digest your vids for sure!! Thanks for teaching with such clarity! I feel like this vid could be titled "Pro Piano for Beginners!!" Hehe!!
Fantastic thanks. This just proves the point that keeping it simple is the fastest way to develop. Too many teachers try to make ill begotten money and will try and mistify the obvious in order to throttle the max $ out of a student. I used to teach jazz guitar decades ago. I always tried to do exactly the same simple but fast track methods such as he does in his ii V I (vi) examples above. My biggest problem was that students expected it to be really difficult and was their biggest obstacle breaking the mindset that it MUST be diffcult.. This demonstrates it fantastically.
Wow Julian, great video. I am a professional jazz trombonist and have been wanting to learn to improvise on piano. This is the most concise and helpful video I have ever seen on the subject. Thanks
Learning to solo and improvise is extremely difficult. In this video you unlock the way to get started in a very clear and simple way and you give very useful tools! Awesome!
Great to see you on another superb video Julian. Your clear, no unnecessary frills attached approach cuts through to the chase and are fabulous for players and teachers.
This was an absolutely fantastic dive into improv. I have about 13 years of classic local music training but after starting jazz this was the one thing really holding me back. This is super helpful for making it sound great while still letting you understand the theory!
You are marvellous! Thank you Julian ! This is my two years learning how to improvise resumed and explained clearly in a matter of a few minutes on a RUclips of yours. Thanks again!
The content you put out Julian is second to none! You completely demystify complicated subjects and make them accessible to those willing to just practice. Thanks for this amazing video.
This is the best video on - “how to” improv on the web! Period! I have seen them ALL!!!!! You really are the best teacher on the web. Bravo and thanks!!!
You are the best jazz teacher on the Internet and if I was a younger man who had lots of time on his hands, I would endeavour to try and learn to improvise as you teach it but I always got stuck on trying to play inverted chords quickly enough that I gave up in frustration. Still great to watch you though. 👍
Thank you so much Robert! I completely understand. To be fair I crammed years of learning into a 20 minute lesson here, but I'm so pleased you enjoyed watching : )
do not give up! Being not the youngest, i understand the problem! Practice steadily without overly enthusiasm will improve by time. I discovered a huge motivation could hinder the progress. good success and luck!
This is an amazing video. In twenty minutes you've given me a couple of years worth of keyboard practice exercises. I started piano in lockdown aged 55 so I am in no rush to learn to read/write music but I like the fact that you provide extension tasks for those who have those skills. Thank you so much. Andrew
I have, on occasions, taught improvisation to adult learners. You are the first teacher, other than myself, that I've heard reference speech patterns. I always point out to students lacking confidence that they already improvise every time they speak. Also, when improvising alone, I will often take a half-remembered poem from school days and use its phrasing and rhythms as a starting point .... or invent my own.
This tutorial was the BEST!!! I already have the chops to do a lot of damage with this, I just never knew the jazz formula and honestly didn't know there was one. This is MIND BLOWING!
I don't play, but I'm scratching the surface of theory and even though it's what Bill Evans would call approximating, it really bangs my pan and gives me a better ear for listening. This is a fabulous lesson. You extoll the same wisdom Bill Evans extolled; approach the thing simply - no matter how fundamentally - but absolutely accurate and true. And you must embrace, even love the process, so that you will have something you can build on. I used the same approach with my haircutting students. The principal is the same regardless of the artform. You will have learners who embrace it and you will always have learners who want to race ahead and skip it. But for those who do take the time to learn how to walk the benefit is well worth the slower pace. A terrific and inspiring lesson you've given. Thanks!
Thank you for this lesson. Learning piano improv is such a fun journey, and videos like these make it manageable to keep on progressing and finding new things to do
I have always had an interest in jazz piano, but was always too intimidated to ever try. Thank you for making this accessible to me. You are a great teacher
What video would you like me to make next?
Please let me know the exact title you'd like to see, and specify what you'd like me to cover.
Upper structures 😎 👍🏼 🎶
Please make more videos on the subject of ear training and transcribing songs.
More approach patterns that you have not covered previously would be great! Your explanations are fantastic.
Excellent. Next, I would like to see you take a complex tune (Stella by Starlight) or something like that and break down the harmonic structure (key centers, deceptive resolution, modal substituion) and your approach to improv on a more complex structure.
Easy steps to reharm.

So low iq if you've been playing classical 10 years and can't figure out jazz

Literally 20 seconds in and I know this is gonna be a game changer

No lies detected.

By showing these tricks you have demystified a lot of jazz improv for me! Thanks alot!
That's great to hear Fred! Thank you. Do you have any other requests for new videos?
@@jazztutorial Hi Julian, I still haven't seen a lot of your videos, so I have plenty to work through at the moment. Thanks again!
