I thought volunetric displays were tacky solutions, but they work and they have a few unique visual qualities and quirks that make me feel like I'm seeing this in a 1980's Ridley Scott scifi movie. Pretty cool.
Very well done! I had a similar idea that i did a little planning on years ago. This is much higher resolution and probably better frame rate than my plan, i was going to use programmable high density LED strips adhered back to back in a double sided sheet. It is cool to see a better plan actually built. Is your dispay in a sphere to help with pulling a vacuum to decrease air resistance and operating decibles? Never thought of using a sphere, it looks amazing.
I'm curious. Do we have the technology to make this smaller? Like, about the size of a toy capsule? If so, I can think of a few really cool applications for this.
@ambrose3560 I was thinking more like a VMU for a console similar to the Dreamcast. But instead of an LCD screen, it's a hologram. It could be used to raise a Chao on the go kinda like a futuristic tamagatchi. Or you could attach a remote control gyro roller attachment to control a tiny projection of Sonic running around either with the console's controller or a phone app.
Dude, nice shader programming. Funny that you don't need to do the projection step to a flat screen 😄. This is VERY cool. My background is in EE. This is no small project, and an inspiration. Honestly incredible to see. Ps. I think your camera/recording is running at game fps?? 🤔
Is it quieter now or did you alter the sound also when to you have the main or build video planned? Would be so cool to build one or at least see what you’ve done :)
Hello, I’ve been looking into volumetric display projects lately, and I have a question. In the videos I’ve seen so far, the displays always seem to have low resolution. Why is that? I mean, why aren’t higher resolution screens (like thin flexible LED screens) used? Is it related to refresh rates or something else?
Yes, the panel is only rotating at 10 rev/sec, so with a faster shutter speed it’s unwatchably flickery. It looks fine to the naked eye. I’m building a new display which should get up to much higher speeds and yield better videos.
where's my 4k volumetric display that uses water vapor as the screen??? this is 2024 and only rich bastards get access to technology that can literally hear our thoughts with the wifi
this feels like something you would watch characters "play" in a 1980's movie about a futuristic setting and they play while having a conversation
back to the future type shi
*Or star wars. And that transition from 2d to 3d was wild!!!:D*

Yes, it’s all about the refresh rate. A fast oled is in the low hundreds. These panels manage several kHz, and are very cheap.
@@ancientjameswhat display panel is this specifically?
my life has purpose again
Is the reason why it’s choppy because you have to match the framerate of the camera to the spins? So it’s visible?
Yes. It looks a lot better to the naked eye.
okama gamesphere
Isn’t this 2d though? It’s just one of those spinning fan displays right?
Those fans spin a 1D strip to make a 2D display. This spins a 2D panel to make a 3D display.
