I’ve been with my bf for over 10 years and I haven’t reached 30 y/o yet. It’s so exhausting having to explain to people, especially the older Asian parents, why I’m not married, have kids, work this kinda job, or living away from parents. I’m not interested following anyones timeline except my own!!! My parents came here to give me a better life and this is the way I want to live 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Weylie,
I relate to you so much. I’m 27 and have been with my boyfriend since we were both 14. I never really cared for marriage and kids either. Just wanna travel and be with our fur babies right now! 🫶🏻

Is it strange that we’re all 27 (26 but 27 at the end of this month) and have also been with my boyfriend since 14. Seeing this thread gives me reassurance that I’m not alone and our relationship isn’t “strange” like the people in my life have said urging us towards marriage. We love our life currently and plan for marriage we have no dates planned because we’re just trying to live in the moment.

I'm also 27, I've been with my bf for 6 years. I knew since I was 14 that I don't wanna have children! Over the past years I always had to defend my decision and I was met with "You'll change your opinion, you will see". Now we are looking into "terminal protection" since we just wanna spent time with our dog and enjoy our life to the fullest!

I think you're committed to more than you gave yourself credit for at @5:07
Ive been following along with you and journey for about 10 years now or even a little over (ever since you taught how to put on a tampon-- it was a monumental turning point in my life) so you've been like a big sis to me ever since- Ive learned at you age what means to own my own femininity through the ways you've shown up, taught, lead and embraced within yourself. Now I'm rn I feel like I wanna return favor 10 fold and just say
    girl you are committed!!
    - to your relationship with Wah
    - to the animals you nurture
    - you are committed to your health,
    - to this channel
    - your daily routine
    - Taking care of yourself, your home
and this just from the outside looking in
I've noticed that also committed to being a friend to people - I mean, you've been friends with some of the same people for how long now? girl you are L O Y A L, dependable, nurturing !!
Not only to friends and to those you're in relationships with (platonic or romantic) but also to and within the relationship you have with yourself to living a genuine and true life. I noticed even, you lead from a place a love. thats a commitment to certain values you have.
and yeah as people, we all have duality, strengths in one areas, challenges in another. All are valid and worthy. I think even if you are/have struggled to commit to certain aspects of life, give yourself the credit you deserve for doing a damn good job at committing in the other areas. Because truly, you're doing a great job even if it doesn't always feel like it
It's important we big each other up and put respect on each others names, but its just as important to big ourselves up & be gentle with ourselves in the process-- something you've taught me. Thank you, Weylie. I am much more gentle and forgiving with myself because of your authentic and self compassionate way of exciting.
I appreciate you Weylie and I am so grateful you exist. You've taught me a lot a lot ❤‍🔥🌱✨

I totally agree with your view on the state of the world being a factor in deciding to whether have children. It is great that you are being aware and taking time to decide. Bringing a person into food scarce and over populated world when current country policies don't support it, finances maybe stretched thin, social media impacts on child development etc. Being able to have children and raise them in the state of the world is a privilege. I wished the norm was 'why do you want to have kid(s)?'

This is so idiotic and childish, and quite frankly "privileged". It's privilege that grants you unlimited birth control. If you think the world you live in today is worse off then when your parents or grandparents procreated, you're kidding yourself. The world is not overpopulated, and "food scarce" (it may be scarce to the foods you like but it's not scarce).

I feel you except I'm 30 and single. Every conversation with my relatives involves asking me "do you have boyfriend? It's time to get married and have children." This traditional Chinese thinking used to really trigger me that I would argue back. Now I realized that their opinion doesn't matter and I don't need to engage, so I just say OK and keep repeating OK until they change the topic. I acknowledge I hear their thoughts (honestly I think they just want to feel like heir thoughts have value) but I don't care about what they think and they can't put a gun to my head to make me get married and have children. So yeah do you, live your life as you want girl. You 100% deserve it!!!

I’m a 30 year old asian woman who isn’t married and doesn’t have children. I totally understand not feeling ready especially with the state of the world. Getting married and having children is a huge commitment and it doesn’t matter how long you have been with Wah. You are not on anyone else’s timeline. The thought of having a child and also caring for all your pets is just so overwhelming to think about because each life deserves so much time and care and you seem like the type who wants to put 100% into every single baby!!! It’s STILL okay to do your own thing and it’s not at all toxic to be living how you want to as long as you aren’t hurting anyone. 🤗

I used to want that life.. married with kids.. but the limitations brought about by my father leaving, having no money for school, growing up in a third world, just migrating to a first world in my 30s… it’s like I’m just starting to experience how life can be all over again and i cannot imagine bringing a child into this world only to not give them a beautiful, comfortable life because I do not want them to have to go through what I did… and should i not be able to reach any of my goals because of a child (focus, priorities, finances), and then project my resentment or frustrations on to them will be unfair for them.

To clarify before I comment on this topic, Weylie, I am an older woman, happily married with children. However, I cannot believe that anyone would have the audacity to ask another person , male or female, whether or not they are going to get married/have children, even if it is disguised as ‘what are your thoughts on marriage/having children.’ It is none of their business, ever! Live your life according to your own compass, Weylie. Simply love your blogs!

tysm for this very relatable conversation about marriage and having children 😭 me and my bf have been together since 2011 (anniversary twins!) (I'm 25 he's 27 yes we were babies when we got together haha high school sweethearts) and every time we get hit with the "when are y'all getting married?" or even "are y'all getting married?" it just rubs me the wrong way every time and it's so frustrating! but I'm also slowly learning to let go and not care about these questions or remarks, and accept that it's not my responsibility to teach people that my relationship is none of their business ❤️

I think if I was in the now with no kids I wouldn’t have kids either and it’s only cause of this crazy world. There is so much crime, gun violence, inflation. I think about their future all the time and it scares the heck out of me. Just do whatever is right in your heart. Nobody should be shaming you for the way you want to live your life.

We’re happy the way things are. You would think they’d be happy as long as we are. Everyone has to prioritize they’re life based off their wants/needs, no one else’s.

Idk why people always say the phrase “marriage and children” as if both have to exist if you have the former. I’m married, been so for 6.5 years now, and children are not part of it. They never will be. Marriage doesn’t HAVE to bring children. It’s just a piece of paper that gives you better legal and financial benefits with your partner. (Not saying you have to get married though. Lots of people are perfectly happy without tying the knot.) Also, if anyone ever asks us when we’re going to start a family, my answer is: “We became a family the day we got married. Not having kids doesn’t make us any less of a family.” We and our four cats are perfectly happy as we are.

But also, we don't wan to be rushed either. But I TOTALLY agree with you, no rush into anything unless you are happy 😁👍❤️

I relate so hard to the not being married by 30 stigma. I just turned 27 and my mom has already brought this up a couple of times and I get so stressed out and pressured by it. My mom is also the stubborn type. I am nowhere near ready and I mainly want to focus on my career for now.

Very much can relate to this! I'm 30 now and I've been married for 8 years, and we don't have children and we are not sure if we will have either. We have decided to leave it for now and perhaps chat about it again in a few years. Times have changed sooo much and we don't need to have 2.5 kids by 25 anymore LOL. So refreshing to not feel alone in this though! xx

While I know the question about marriage and kids can seem annoying, I love each time you talk about it because I start feeling like my thoughts change on the topic too. In my hispanic household, the woman is supposed to cook and clean and bare children and while the man works, I have also fought this way of living. My boyfriend and I have been together for about 4 years and I’m 23 and i’ve had that “you’re expiring” talk as well. There is a lot of pressure from his side of the family since he has cousins who are younger or the same age as of having children. Always do what’s best for you, because at the end of the day marriage and children is a HUGE responsibility that only YOU know how much you can handle.

Weylie, I related to this so much! I feel like you have always been the big sister I’ve never had through the years. I realized that we have many likes/hobbies in common from dogs to gardening. I got so hyped when I saw you climb. I’ve been climbing for a year now and feel like I unlocked another level of love for you 😂 as for the keyboard…. Def the same toxic trait I have. You and Wah are my favorite couple and I’m not sure why people get upset over the marriage and kid thing lol. At the end of the day, you still choose each other and can make your own best judgment. Thank you for always being you.

I thing we have to remember is 1, when people ask these questions they are looking out for you. 2, its a convo starter, and 3, its old fashioned mind thinking BUT we have to remember we dont all think the same so we cant not get offended because sometimes we do or ask the same thing without thinking really.
I realize as i am 30 no one is like me i cant be picky when it comes to people's way of thinking or life. I have to understand thats how they are and i cant change that. I use to judge small things about people but i realize i too am being judged for being me. So i do my thing and i remind myself to NOT get offended when being asked a question. No ones perfect 👌 you live your life as you want and dont mind others opinions.

I literally loved your response on the marriage/kids questions. At the end of the day someones opinion and choice on that should be theres and not pushed onto others around them. I also think its a lot of maturity to sit down and think about the pros and cons of having children and not just thinking "oh Im a women and im this age so I should just go ahead and do it."
    P. S. Please don't forget about your American followers when you move to Asia 😭

Not saying you need to get married, but marriage does give you certain rights (for example, if your husband were to go into a coma, you would have first right to make medical decisions for him). A wedding isn’t necessary, but I do think if you are sure about your significant other, being married (on paper) offers very important benefits that many don’t realize until they end up in a sticky situation.

I admire you for being so thoughtful about marriage and children. Also for taking good care of your aging pets and being there for them. My husband and I have been together for 11 years and married for 6 of those years. We get a ton of questions about having kids. My response the past few years is “we’re happy without kids” because how can people argue about your happiness right? Wrong lol. People will argue and try to persuade you regardless. I still give this answer though because it’s not an explanation, which can be very personal.

I have to say, you’re so mature of how you handle people asking you these questions over & over again. Especially the ones that say (to piggy back what you said), “being Asian, you should be married & have children by now.”
It sucks that people have to act that way & they think they have control of what you do 😣
Even though we’re not the same race, I went through the same thing. Family questioned when we’ll get engaged. Once we decided to do so, then we were asked about the wedding date & kids. It’s like y’all need to chill! 🤣 we’re just enjoying each stage that was a huge decision for us.

If I didn’t have kids rn, I probably still wouldn’t be ready either. It’s a huge process and it really helps when other parts of ur life feels more settled. Also, u never have to explain the dynamics of ur relationship to anyone. ❤️

I really agree that being an Asian we kinda have this "rule" created by however that we should settle down before 30. I even have this thought in mind before that I should be married once I turn 25 and now I'm 26 and still consider myself a child (childish?? haha) and can't imagine raising my own kids haha. I'm in a relationship for 5 yrs now, and currently hearing the "when are you going to have kids/ when are you getting married?". I still want to enjoy life and it should not be bounded by age.

It must be very frustrating to always be asked about such a personal thing in your life, but I am very grateful that you chose to share your thoughts and life with us. I'm sure there are many people like you who have those same thoughts. The pressures of every single person living ONE certain way is crazy.
I definitely have had the same thoughts on if I want to bring life into a world that is so dark and scary. Growing up, I always thought I wanted to be a mom and have a family, but that was before I learned about how the world really is. It's truly crazy and scary.
However, I also thought about how I am adopted. I was abandoned at a police station in Nanning, China and adopted from mid 40-year-old American parents at 8 months. My two younger sisters are also adopted from other countries in Asia. Like every other human, I've experienced so many good and bad things in the world. But I do feel lucky and thankful to have the life I was given.
I can't imagine what my life would be like if my parents had not adopted me. I know there are many different views on adoption, but from my perspective, my family truly feels like my family. I've known nothing else, and I'm so grateful for my life, despite this crazy world. I feel like often times, people go through many struggles with deciding on having kids, trying to have kids, etc. and I often wonder why adoption isn't talked about as often. Maybe the idea of giving a loving life to someone who is alone and needing a loving family - could be an option for people to think about as well ❤
I will always respect you, Weylie! You are so thoughtful and caring. I am always rooting for you and your happiness/fulfillment.

I think the best thing we can do is create the family space that we wanted with our children- like I grew up in a toxic family environment - my goal is to create the best loving family. The best way we can help is having kids and creating better and kinder human beings, creating a better generation for the future. The kind of world we want for our species.

Also having this issue lol can't decide whether I want to wait until we feel like we're ready, or just let life happen and deal with it. I feel like "when to have kids" is one of the few things in life we do sort of have control over (unlike many other things in life that just slaps you in the face without warning), so we tend to think about whether we're ready or not to try to find that perfect time. I have trouble with the "need to control," which is probably why I'm struggling with the idea of having kids too (because once theyre born, I'm def gonna learn that I can't control anything).

The topic of marriage and kids is so relatable. I’m 28 and single. Anytime I attend a family gathering, the hot topic is “when are you getting married” and it’s just so frustrating because in their mentality, “something is wrong with me” if I’m not following tradition and starting a family by my late 20’s. I don’t know how to tolerate these comments any longer. It also makes me think something is wrong with me even though I know there isn’t

  • @jessieperson

I'm 29, and while I'm married, I'm not sure I want to have kids. My husband feels the same way. With the world as crazy as it is and me still processing generational trauma, I don't feel confident that I could give a child the life they deserve. And, also, I'm finally starting to take care of myself, and I don't think I could continue to do that in the same way if I had kids. Once you have kids, they are (rightfully) the priority.
