- These are watercolour mistakes that sometimes are "hidden" and that you tend to forget about even after several years of practice. Do you make any of these?

My advice for pencil sketches is to use a regular *colored pencil* in the same hue as the local color - it can be the same color all over the painting, but I usually use different pencils for skin, hair, clothes, and other objects. They don't smudge like graphite and won't muddy up the paint. And if a line remains visible here and there, it just blends with the watercolor and doesn't look out of place.
Some artists use watercolor pencils for sketching because they dissolve, but I prefer to keep my lines visible until the very last shadow layer.
@@NelaDunato that sounds like a fantastic idea! Thank you so much for sharing. I’m always looking for new tips! Fiona x
So important - paint without judgement and don’t look at anyone else’s style. I was doing that just a few minutes ago before watching this video. Thanks for the reminder!!!!
❤️
Thank you, Fiona. I always learn from you. I started a small drawing this morning, and throughout the day went back to it to add another transparent layer. It was my own style for the first time seen by my eyes, not someone else's. It gave me great joy all day to work on my little picture. Thank you for your instruction :)
I’m delighted to hear that. That’s a beautiful idea to go back to it during the day and add a layer. Well done! ❤️
I've been painting in watercolor for almost a decade, and have heard much information about transparency and layering (It always confused me that there is an actual Transparent Watercolor Society with strict rules not to use opaque paints. Huh? Why? lol), but now (sheepishly) admit that it never sunk in until watching this video and the way you've explained it! At last! Other standout tips: tell a story and find your own style by not looking at others'. Gold! Thank you, Fiona!
I’m happy I was able to help. The “purists” say you should not use white in watercolour, only the white of the paper. I still use mint by white nights which has white in it and white gouache or bleedproof white for my beloved highlight. The purists can say what they want 🤣 I just know not to paint over these kind of opaque paints once they are put down. Fiona x
You’re not alone. Although I have only been painting with watercolour for about three years, I don’t know why it didn’t dawn on me about opaque paint and how it interacts with transparent paint. 🤦🏼♀️😂 Isn’t it great though that we can learn something new no matter how long we’ve been doing a thing 😁💚
@@drawingsinadrawer well damn the purists! I’ve always been a rogue, anyway 😁💚

Six years for a watercolor artist is still in the infancy usually. Although your skills are far past that stage, it’s amazing you have been only painting with this medium for six years.
@@sheilagilleland4312 thank you so much. I have been painting with it without taking any “off time” . It’s going to be a life-long journey with watercolour hopefully! And still lots to learn! ❤️
Dearest Fiona . Thank you for the encouragement and for being so open with your process. I really appreciate your tips, such as not making washes with opaque colours …. about to paint… inspired by you 😀😘🙏
That’s fantastic! Yes, once you’ve put a colour with white in it down, whatever you put over it will turn into mud. Have a great day, Erica! ❤️
I look so forward to your posts each Sunday. You have inspired me…I am just beginning to work with watercolor
That’s amazing! I’m so happy to hear that! ❤️
Thank you, Fiona, for being so open about your own do's and don’ts, as well as your mistakes. So often, we think we are the problem-that we’re not good enough-and that’s why we don’t get the results we expect.
When I started with watercolor, I ignored the basics, like color theory and pigment knowledge. Over time, I realized what was wrong with my paintings: a lack of fundamental understanding, too much input from watching other artists, and not enough practice. This led me into the comparison trap, where I felt stuck.
What I’ve come to understand is that we’re all on the same journey in some way. Each of us has a unique personality, so our art should reflect that instead of trying to replicate someone else’s style. Growth as an artist comes through both successes and mistakes.
So, thank you, Fiona, for sharing your knowledge so openly-it truly means a lot! 🫶🏾
Thank you so much for this beautiful comment. We do sometimes avoid spending too much time on the basics and then they come back to “haunt” us! Another one I forgot to mention is that I should know by now to limit my palette more. The results are so much more luminous and transparent! Fiona x
I have loads of beautiful brushes but end up sticking with the one I’m holding, too!
🤣 I KNEW it! There had to be someone else!
@@drawingsinadrawerit’s ridiculous! I have gorgeous brushes, spend a lot of money on them and then proceed to do an entire portrait in a size 10 or whatever I have in my grubby mitts. I really need to use more! I’m sure I’d get better results with less effort if I did!
I love your channel and your work is gorgeous. I especially love the way you paint faces and eyes. Also, thank you for sharing the name of the watercolor sketchbook you are using. I ordered one and I AM SO PLEASED. The paper is BEAUTIFUL to paint on and doesn’t really pill up or degrade. Thank you for another wonderful video and all your encouragement and advice.
That’s so nice of you to write such a sweet comment. I am happy my videos were helpful ❤️ Fiona x
Oh, yes - I still make some of these mistakes!! Definitely, forget to clean my brush each time before using a new color.

Thank you, Fiona - I love to watch you paint! I have learned so much from you about layering. Now I just need to put all this into practice, although I don't paint faces or animals, you kind of make me want to! Beautiful work.
Thanks -

Thank you so much! That’s a real compliment! 🩷

As always I have so enjoyed this session ?… I’m learning so much but also just enjoying a peaceful start to my day! My biggest issue with watercolour is that I am impatient and don’t wait for layers to dry properly?…but I’m getting better after watching your channel! Thankyou Fiona!
Darling, have you thought about using a small heat tool or a hair dryer? Or does that disturb your layers? I use one. I don’t have the patience to wait! Fiona ❤️
@ - I have heat tool but never used it in watercolour!!! I’ll try that! Thanks!!! And btw- not sure why the ? Was in my initial text - finger slip I think! No ? Here- I just love your work and teaching!
@@jennivandermoezel8907just don’t hold it too close to the paper or it might damage it x
Enjoyed your video and love your style and work. I’m very bad for mixing up my brushes and I don’t feel ready for the day until I’ve had my hands on my watercolours
I know the feeling!
Very good, beatiful, wonderfull, you and your art make me happy, bring light and hope to me week, they are full light.
Thanks, thanks, thanks
Thank you so much ❤️
such beautiful painting as always ❤
Thank you ❤️❤️❤️
What is this sketch book? I love the size and how much you can get on it. Gorg!!! The lady up in the right corner with the snake and hooded girl, WOW! I love your words of encouragement too.
It’s Baohong with the hot pressed paperw which still has a light texture. I wish it were bigger! But I think this is as big as they get ❤️
Your paintings are beautiful 😍
@@Embercreates1 thank you 😊

beautiful video.. at least if you are making mistakes you are still making art.
Exactly! Let’s do it no matter what! 💪🏻🌈

I enjoy so much your videos. They are always a delight to watch. I feel painting in this hot pressed sketchbook is better in less layers. My painting usually turn out better in fewer layers than when I put more. Anyways, thank you for sharing your art.😘🤍🤍
Thank you so much! Yes. Less layers iate better sometimes!
