Step Four of How to Paint Expressive ( plus announcement)
I have always wanted to create portraits of people and animals in your style of painting. I dont know where to begin.
I have just started my watercolour journey, and I have been only practicing to swatch. Your video excited me, and I love your painting style. I have bought them, and will use them instead of my daniel smith and M. Graham watercolours, until I am more proficient using my paintbrushes. I have not learned to draw. Do you have any printables for your subscribers to paint along with you? Also, I am a new subscriber, and heared someone talk about this months paintings. Is that only for Patreon members? Could you do a video colour along using these watercolour paints?
The way they behave remind me somewhat of soft pastels suspended in an airbrush medium for painting. Regardless of what is or isn’t in the paint recipe, your sketches are lovely.
Your brush is long. West make us it? Handles water well.
I've never used the Kuretake watercolors, but the descriptions I've heard from several sources tend to say that they're not sure they're actually watercolors -- they feel more like Inktense blocks to paint with. Like you, most say they like them a great deal ..... though I must admit I never heard any of them describe it as liquid charcoal. :) One thing that has become an issue for me with the sets that are such a great bargain --great price and pretty great to use. It's the fact that you can't buy refills open stock -- if you've fallen in love with a color, you have to buy another whole set. It wasn't that big a deal before I began to invest in higher-end watercolors, but now I am reluctant to spend my money this way.
Kuretake are Japanese watercolours meant for calligraphy. Their binding agent appears to be some sort of fish glue, not honey or gum Arabic like western watercolours and yes, they do feel completely different and have less transparency. Are they watercolours? I think maybe some watercolour artist from Japan could tell us how they are considered there compared to Western ones. You gave me an idea. I’m going to write to Lightwish and ask if they sell the colours individually. They have shown me some tubes, but I haven’t had time to look into them yet. Thank you for your interesting comment. I appreciate it. Fiona x
What do you use to make the initial drawing ?
Normal pencil. Usually of the less greasy kind so H2. If you mean the portrait to the right, for richer skin tones I sometimes use a waterproof ( please make sure it’s waterproof! ) fine liner so I will still be able to see the underlying sketch as they layers build up. It was a Pigma pen in brown. It says archival ink on it and on the other side it says waterproof and fade proof lines. I hope this helps! Fiona x
@ Thank you , it's the pigma pen . I like how it's defined but yet not too bold at the end .
I’m fascinated by the multiple layers. My attempts often result in mud dunes, or the paper itself being unable to let under layers shine through.
Usually that would be due to either low quality paper ( easily fixed without spending a ton of money. Just buy individual sheets of wc paper and cut them down and paint on both sides). The transparency is also aided by how thin the layers are, but with watercolour, that’s the way it is. If you get mud try not to use paints that have white in them. Use pastel colours last and not at the beginning as they muddy things up when mixed with other colours. Fiona x
I heard of you in a painting group yesterday. We all watched your watercolor hacks and then got busy painting and it was a blast! I found your tutorial quite eye opening and it gave me even more ways to teach watercolor painting more effectively. Bravo for your advice to just let go and paint!
Wow! That’s flattering. Thank you so much and say hello to your painting group! Fiona x
I love your work, just beautiful!! ❤😍🤗
@@cherigreen4471 thank you so much ❤️⭐️
A wonderfully expressive piece, love the inclusion of the cobalt turquoise ,it makes for a beautifully unique inclusion. ❤
Thank you so much, Tabbi x
I like your style but why do you not center the pupils in the eye?
@@justtubingby129 because they aren’t or rather , they are, but according to the position, to how much of the eyeball you can see and how much of the eyelid covers the eye, they can appear to be in a different position and the same applies to the irises. I just learnt this by observing my references . Fiona x
@drawingsinadrawer Thank you for your reply.
They look like they work similar to Kuretake and other Japanese paints. I’m sure you e tried them but if not I think you’d like them and they are light fast
@@Amanda-uc5jq I have them! And yes, I thought the same exact thing as you, but these are almost charcoal like in their blending. I love to paint splotchy, so maybe you can’t see it very well here, but if you look at the eyes, especially in the animals, that’s where you’ll notice it . But definitely closer to Ganzai Tambi than western watercolours. Fiona x
@@drawingsinadrawer is that similar to water soluble graphite? I use charcoal pencils but can’t imagine what they would feel like wet. I’ve just ordered some Faber-Castell water soluble graphite pencils and I’m looking forward to trying them.
@ like you I have only tried regular charcoal. I do have those Derwent charcoal soluble blocks, but I have worked with them too little to express an opinion. I do feel they are more powdery. These ones are not powdery at all. I even tried touching the paper after, and nothing, it’s perfectly smooth. Let me know how it goes with those pencils! Fiona x
I like the look of the BORCIANI E BONAZZI brushes and will try to get some, what size are you using in the video please? Sorry, the video is a bit old so I hope you can help - thank you = )
Oh gosh. It is old. Do you mean the flat brushes I use for the hair?
@@drawingsinadrawer Hello! Yes, the flat brush for the hair is the one I meant.. thank you. Also, what colour red are you using to paint the lips, please? Thank you again, I am loving your videos.
@ so I am sure I used madder lake red light by White Nights for the lips as my main colour. The Borciani Bonazzi brushes are simple flat synthetic brushes surely in size 10 or 12. I hope that helps! Fiona x
So enjoy watching you paint, love the depth you achieve in the eyes, so luminiscent. Watching from Ontario Canada.
@@jayneelinor i love Ontario! Send my love to that beautiful land. Thank you for your compliments ⭐️

lovely painting. those paints look like they were fun to play with. thanks Fiona
They were indeed!
As always …. a lovely way to finish a busy day watching your beautiful style of painting …. Erica, South Australia 😀😘🙏
Hello, dear Erica! 🌈
That eye within the rose is amazing. Gorgeous work ❤❤❤
Thank you! I believe that turned into a tutorial on Patreon
From what you show they are reminiscent of the kind of student quality paint I used to have made with dye instead of pigments. Truthfully I’ve always seen it as a case of preference over one being “better” than the other. I made plenty of beautiful art with it and it very much moved the way you showed. Almost floating in the water until moved as long as the paint was still wet. Those paints are long gone as they were lost during a sudden move situation, but I’m thrilled to have been shown a possible replacement for them. Gratefully, -Puck
They sound exactly as you described them!
My favourite art supply purchase of 2024 (oddly enough) is water soluble charcoal..you MUST try it. Is so fun to manipulate..i do portraits mainly. The brand is Schminke Kohle..it’s expensive…but a little goes so far. Ive used my so much and barely into the tube. I squeeze some in a little tin and let it dry…it makes a cake like a watercolor cake. Just rewet like watercolor, and away you go. I wipe my drawing with a cloth after its dry as a grit remains on the surface…the drawing stays however. A warning though, dont use your best watercolor brushes, its hard on them.
Interesting. They’re nothing like the Derwent soluble blocks? I have these but still need to try them
@ no, i have those as well and i hate them…to totally different
I watched it most for the girls face painting, wow. Amazing what you can do with cheap chalky watercolors, beautiful results and colors.
I thought the same!
I fell in love with your eyes, it doesn't matter what you paint with everything is just stunning, I love the rabbits also. Maybe the paint has a lot more filler? The colors are beautiful. I wonder if they're archival or will they fade, maybe make a swatch and leave it in a window and check periodically how it does compared to a well known brand.
I somehow managed to skip that part! I did mean to say that I’ll bet these are not lightfast
Hi Fiona! I love your videos and your paintings! I’ve already learned a lot from you and appreciate it so much. You explain things very well and make it easy to follow your instructions. May I please ask what color mix you suggest for painting dark skinned people? Thank you for taking the time to share your talent and knowledge in the amazing world of watercolor! 🎨💕
I would start off with an under painting ( like an initial very diluted layer that you use to block in shadows ) of blue or purple.. let dry and add layers of burnt umber and sepia letting dry between layers
@ thank you!! 😊
Your style is so beautiful!!! I love watching your videos!
Thank you ❤️
What a beautiful way to wind down from a busy weekend watching you create . Thank you! 💜

Beautiful spread, I'm hoping to join into this month's drawings. Living in Australia we do have a lot of those types of paint sets coming from Asia and I have to say they are 80 percent of them are a good buy, but there's that line that they might not. I will look into this one. Thankyou again ❤ oh lightwish sell Paul Rubens, that's a good Chinese brand
@@jackygann594 hello! Yes, they sent me those too a few months ago. It would be great if you could join our lives. It’s too bad the time zones are what they are. I’ll have to do one just for the Australians sooner or later.
@drawingsinadrawer yes it will have to be replay for now
Beautiful spread. Thanks for sharing, these appear to be a great value.
Thank you 🙏
actually if you received them for free it is considered a sponsorship etc at least in some countries as you received goods in payment for a review.
I have signed no contract. The items are sent to me and I can choose whether or not to review them. Whether to say they are bad or good. It doesn’t sound like a sponsorship to me. Whatever it was, I didn’t get paid 1 cent to do this.

Hi Fiona, I just discovered from another artist (not sure if I can name her!) that Baohong and Meeden are the same paper! They are in process of re-branding to Meeden! Baohong paper is older stock! Never would have guessed…
Really??? I have never used Meeden paper, but I do have empty metal palettes. I often get the feelings things get created and then go through different brands with little tweaks. Just an impression. Thanks for the info, Karen! Fiona x
