U open my eyes. How so different plant market in our country and others. As a seller, of course i love making a flip on a hot plant in the market. But to learn a new mindset on how selling plant from this video, i think i will try the new path. Thank you
Thank you for showing both the beautiful side of the plants as well as the financial side of plants! I’m sure it’ll help many of us decide what plants to purchase! I completely agree with Mr Sean on the last point on how common plants can in fact be our source of happiness and peace. Thus, I highly suggest that people just buy plants they prefer best instead of following absurd trends and rules that others want to impose on.
This content is brilliant from minute 1 to minute 23! Smart and well-structured. Here in Brazil, I think collectors are the early adopters. I can’t see this distinction, at least not around here. Congrats, Sean.

A few weeks ago I went to a plant fair and saw a beautiful & big yellow/light green monstera Thai Con I had never seen before that was half the price of the Albo he had on the table for double the size ($200 AUD over $400AUD). He originally brought it to see if it would sell but also to gauge if anyone would buy a very yellow monstara. I was the only person who asked about it and because my Husband forgot my wedding anniversary which was that day, I bought it for myself out of spite & because it was something different. It was tagged as Monstera Villa (though I assume this is a temporary name or might be what they called it as I cannot find it online anywhere) but I was told it was one that came with his regular Thai order as a random variant of the plant that was a aurea hybrid (unsure if true). Whatever the case it's absolutely gorgeous & has two new buds growing since I got it and just stands out amongst my regular Thais & Monsteras as something really incredible. I don't plan on profiting off it, though I am doing a prop swap with a friend who has a mint monstera I want to attempt growing - I'm too afraid to get a regular varigated aurea or mint that will either revert or go all yellow/mint and die that way as my lighting all year around isn't stable (I live in Australia btw, so importing plants is a very strictly controlled thing here, and seeing this plant was a shock because frankly most variations we see of monsteras will never wind up here) but I'm just excited it's loving my house along with my other monsteras. I hope to see more of them for people to buy as it's just a beautiful plant being lime green/yellow with the cream speckles/sectorals of the Thai & makes a great statement plant. If there's is ever a mint Thai that comes out & is affordable or I luck out like I did here I'll be all over it as monsteras just absolutely love my house more than any other plant😊
First of all, I want to tell you that it is very useful that you have dubbed this episode into Spanish, because this way you can see each plant that you present to us better and also listen to it, since I do not have a good command of English. The topics that you present to us in this video are really interesting as always, the truth is that it is good to know how finances work in the world of plants, since I grow and trade with some species of plants. Greetings and congratulations because with these topics many people maintain interest in your channel and many will subscribe to your channel.

Hi Sean, I'm from Indonesia, and yes, those kinds of pyramids are happening here. I truly hope things will improve in the future so we can compete better in the global market. Your content is excellent it really opens our eyes. Thank you!
Hello from Nebraska! I watch as many of your videos as I can. You have a great attitude and perspective for nature. I really enjoyed this video because I have seen for myself how plant prices come down and plants become available overtime.
Agree with you ! I don’t mind growing what the call “ common” they are unique , gorgeous, and they beautify my garden , and bring me peace…. Spending my money on travels and helping others
I agree entirely, and I am another one of those people who 'can wait' for a plant I would really like and really doesn't care about what is trendy. A lot of my plants are grown from rescue cheap or free plants that looked terrible at a plant shop, or even from broken off branches on the floor of a nursery. I would take a well-grown 'regular' plant over something with super special variegation for a lot of money any day.
I'm so happy that we're now at the bottom of the pyramid for a lot of the plants that I've wanted since the 90s: Monstera 'Esqueleto', Philodendron melanochrysum .... both are on my balcony with an obliqua as well. The most expensive was the 'Esqueleto' at a whopping 20 AUD.
What an great episode. It really helps me as a new collector, enjoy the process and learn how to be a better grower of plants and not focus on trying to have a rare plant just to say I have it. Thank you.
You’re welcome! Its a good time to be a new collector. Sooooo many diversity to enjoy now. And the fact that there are many hybrids introduced today, means in a few years the selection will get even more exciting!
Professor Sean, great use of graphics to help us with an overall understanding of pricing, financial players and differing strategies in the plant market. I give you an A+ for this informative lecture. 👍
I have a large variety also. A few rare, several that were rare during covid and other more common plants. As long as I find them beautiful, that’s all that matters. I have no desire to sell unless I had a plant shop, but my community has regular plant swaps. Those are fun and I come home with plants I wasn’t particularly looking for, but really enjoy.
Nice share 💌 I actually attempted to open a small nursery and plant shop. But it brought me no joy so I stopped! I also understand there are many who are passionate about growing and selling, but that just isnt me. Wonderful to know there are many attitudes and goals around plants.
@ I’d love to have a cute little plant shop to putter around in all day. I just don’t think this area would support it. Maybe when I move to Atlanta 🤷♀️
Thanks for another wonderful episode, Sean. I like these business ones as they are so interesting to watch. I only ever buy plants that are no longer rare - as I am too cheap to spend real money. But I love to see a new plant become famous and the rare become the common. Hey, someday - I too could have a M. Burle Marx Flame.😜 Keep up the good work!
Thank you for producing videos that contain meaningful perspectives and are very informative! Selling plants is taxing. I rather just purchase only plants I love, can care for and share with family/friends- easy on the heart.
The economics of plants are something I find interesting so I appreciate this video. I think it’s interesting that my Calatea that I bought for $10 once upon a time would have cost over $50 and it will never increase in price again. But most of my arid species like my caudiciform and cacti will grow up from their “cheap” seedling value and gain value quite easily
Thank you for visiting the Philippines! Glad to know our market here is very competitive. Though I'm at the bottom of the pyramid. Waiting for the prices to drop and also ensuring that the plants that I'm buying are easy to grow. Hope to marry into expensive rareplants soon 😂
As a former banker and orchid grower, I highly recommend buying low selling high. Joining a garden club is the cheapest and best way to get plants. It makes no sense to pay these prices because prices will come down and they propagate much faster than large orchid specimens.
Oooh actually orchid market operates differently. One that Im not familiar with but the orchid market and community is actually bigger than what we can imagine.
I agree but it is also important for people to watch the market as a whole, I don’t think most of these new aroid growers are ready for when the trends lean back towards orchids which it’s already looking to go that way
i really enjoy your videos and how knowledgeable you are about this hobby. thank you for sharing your insights. as a relatively new collector, im trying to be a sponge and your channel is a wonderful place to soak up knowledge 💚
Great video! I’d like to share a bit about how the market works here in Brazil because it’s completely different from others. That pyramid you mentioned basically doesn’t exist here. Unfortunately, we have only about 4 or 5 players importing different plants in general, and their value is mostly based on guesswork. For example, they’ll launch a plant one month for R$10,000, and the next month, drop it to R$3,000. There’s no unity among producers, so us buyers are left at the mercy of their decisions. On top of that, importing plants as an individual isn’t allowed here, which really limits our access. Speaking from personal experience, I once paid around R$1,500 for an A. Kunayalense, and just 1 or 2 months later, the same plant was selling for R$400 because sellers started competing to see who could go cheaper. So nowadays, most collectors just wait for a while until the sellers undercut each other as much as possible, then we buy to avoid taking a "loss." It’s a pretty sad situation.
Got into houseplants about a month and a half ago and your one of the first channels I came across and something about your presentation and the way you handle subjects is super nice and comforting. I thought this type of stuff would be overwhelming but you really do help out (even though it's still a little overwhelming LOL) Saw your TC video recently and I gave it a shot hopefully it works out, still acclimating them and saw your white knight philodendron care video but turns out I bought it and it already had rot so I didn't know how to save it at the time :( but regardless Thank you Sean
Thanks for all your informative videos. I started keeping plants a year ago and your videos helped. I buy what I like and what I can afford and with confidence to keep them alive. My current fav are Anthuriums (long shapes ones and Crystallinum) and Philodendron (especially SS). I hope Singapore will be like the US pyramid so that I can continue to get nice plants at common plants rate. I have propagated a few of my common Florida Beauties and have given the small plants to friends and colleagues. I have never sold a plant.
Singapore is a unique market of its own. Due to limited land and a very good trading hub for plants. Many plants come through. You should have an easy time bringing in plants from thailand and Indonesia ❤️
Depending in where you live, usually most of these plants eventually come to us! Its all about waiting the right time. Some of us can also take an active role if theres business opportunity, to import these plants into our countries and cultivate them for the market so they can spread their beauty (as we also make money)
I absolutely love Indonesian anthuriums, but finding a seller was very difficult. One of the sellers I have stuck with had some of the same grievances you did, that many operate in a way that did not guarantee long term customers. One of the things I disliked was how pushy they are with their sales, if I gave a budget it was ignored. But again, those good sellers that respect my budget constraints and request have resulted in me receiving some wonderful anthurium for my collection. And they offer me stuff I did not know existed 🎉
Interesting share. Yes some people have had a hard time dealing with Indonesia sellers. But we are a treasure trove of new original products, most of them quite low profile!
Great video! Learned a lot! ❤ i am a small collector, my brother is a bit more than me… so if he buys a plant I like, i usually wait and get a cutting from him! I saw your video on monsteras (great one by the way) and will wait for the devil monstera to come down on price (or get my brother to buy one, lol) maybe in 5 years? 😂
Tu as une bonne analyse du marché, tu es vraiment bon . J'ai vécu la même chose à Nice en France en 1990 1995, auprès d'horticulteurs collectionneurs .
The only time I got a "rare" plant was on a 50% off sale when the vine turned into an elongated, scraggly mess and the shop was looking to get rid of it ASAP. Propagated it from the nodes, sold the vines that grew out of the propagation on FB marketplace on the cheap, actually not only breaking even but also getting a little extra back. I love propagating plants, so it worked out for me, but I'd never buy a truly rare plant just to have one - too much risk of thrips and spider mites decimating the prized possession
What I'm seeing is the increase in price in the secondary market...ebay, Etsy and others. So many sellers buying at big box stores and then doubling the price.
Whoaaa very opportunistic. Well as long as there are people willing to buy them then its fair game. Maybe they found the best qualities at the big box stores and took the risk. Which takes time and effort
In all seriousness, though, I love the information you provide in this video. I never thought about the fact that the 32K price tag on the Monstera Devil isn’t necessarily for a collector, but for a company that’s going to propagate for profit.
I rather kill common plants than rare ones lol. I don’t really like the terms common and rare, but I understand that they exist for a reason. Nice pyramids😊, reminded me of being back in college lol.
All pyramids aside Sean..I have to decide between getting married to the Philippines girl with the Devil Monstera, or the Thai girl with the Anthurium Night Dragon..lol
Thank you so much, it was very interesting to know how this business works. It is also interesting how to get there, how to be a part of that business. At the moment I'm just passionate about plants, have ton of them at home, but how to make something bigger of it...
Its always a good idea to propagate and upgrade the collection. Although just keeping what we have is good too. Ive been doing just that as my video edits take most of my time.
In Australia we only have one person who sells exotic staghorn ferns. I got banned from buying from them because I questioned them as to why they ripped me off. They hung up phone and sent a text message saying that they didn’t want to do business anymore
There hasnt been monkey business in the plant market in years (that I know of). Although there was decades ago before the advent of social media and international trade. I feel the plants today respond to supply and demand realistically.
I wonder if the difference between the growers in Indonesia versus China/Thailand/U.S. is not so much a short-term mindset as much as a lack of capital. You need a lot more capital to tide you over while you are mass propagating.
As a person with really specific taste mostly for African succulents, little of this applies or seems appealing. Most people I meet have never seen the things in my collection and are already astounded. Where do you meet people who would know enough about the market to be impressed by a collection featuring the plants worth over a thousand dollars? I look at these variegated aroids and I don't get it.
True, there are many like you actually. But huge majority of the players now actually delve deep into the aroids. Its important to aknowledge this market trend and phenomenon… and… the good news is, trends dont last forever. A lot of skills developed today will apply to other genus in the future. I predict there will be spillovers to other genus/trend, whatever that may be - down the road.
Haha this is why we wait for the right time to buy them. Or you can buy them early but turn it into profit, so you can buy more 🤤 Theres so many ways to enjoy plants
Thank you Sean. I have acquired a lot of courage chopping precious plants by watching your propagating videos. Thank you very much.
You’re welcome 💌💌 thank you for taking the time to write in

I saw your video on monsteras (great one by the way) and will wait for the devil monstera to come down on price (or get my brother to buy one, lol) maybe in 5 years? 😂
Hahaa I have a feeling its more than 5 years. I still cant afford the mint monstera even.
Thank you 😊
You’re welcome ❤️
Tu as une bonne analyse du marché, tu es vraiment bon . J'ai vécu la même chose à Nice en France en 1990 1995, auprès d'horticulteurs collectionneurs .
Thank you for sharing
❤️❤️
I hope they keep buying them and propagating them! Bring it on!
And also breeding/discovering new ones 🤤
This is such an interesting video! I wish you could buy a Florida Beauty in the UK for $20 😆
😅😅
Gracias por tenerlo en español ❤❤ se te agradece en México 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
De nada 😀
Just found Devil Monstera on the Esty site. Ships from France. Also picked up a variegated Billi...both are rooted nodes with leaves.
Oh my god whatt… I wonder how much the devil monstera is…
Are you sure its real?
NO’ scam!
If your looking at many of these plants buying rooted nodes and grow on .
Same applies to Corms.
Both are easy to grow...
To get them from who? Who’s now reliable 😢
OMG! You were in the Philippines? I would've love to meet you. I'm one of your avid fans 🌿
Thank youuu. Im coming to Manila again in mid Feb
People have forgotten what happened during the tulip mania, that market collapsed in similar circumstances when the prices became ridiculous.
History always repeats itself 😀
Que bacana meu irmão! Adoro os seus vídeos!

Thank youu
The only time I got a "rare" plant was on a 50% off sale when the vine turned into an elongated, scraggly mess and the shop was looking to get rid of it ASAP. Propagated it from the nodes, sold the vines that grew out of the propagation on FB marketplace on the cheap, actually not only breaking even but also getting a little extra back. I love propagating plants, so it worked out for me, but I'd never buy a truly rare plant just to have one - too much risk of thrips and spider mites decimating the prized possession
Oh yes thats a sensible thing to do.
good stuff
Thank you
Gracias por este vidéo en espagnol
De nada ❤️
What I'm seeing is the increase in price in the secondary market...ebay, Etsy and others.
So many sellers buying at big box stores and then doubling the price.
Whoaaa very opportunistic. Well as long as there are people willing to buy them then its fair game. Maybe they found the best qualities at the big box stores and took the risk. Which takes time and effort
So true
❤️❤️
I live for the music change at 15:32 , “If you look at the Indonesian side, however, something has gone wrong.”
In all seriousness, though, I love the information you provide in this video. I never thought about the fact that the 32K price tag on the Monstera Devil isn’t necessarily for a collector, but for a company that’s going to propagate for profit.
One last comment lol what is the plant all the way on the left bottom that sort of looks like a Monstera sp. Peru ?
Haha thank you
Yeahh… once in a while you do have some rick billionaire that buys them though. They usually dont have instagram or facebook.
I think thats a variegated monstera albo common form.
I rather kill common plants than rare ones lol. I don’t really like the terms common and rare, but I understand that they exist for a reason. Nice pyramids😊, reminded me of being back in college lol.
Haha thank you
All pyramids aside Sean..I have to decide between getting married to the Philippines girl with the Devil Monstera, or the Thai girl with the Anthurium Night Dragon..lol
Omg hahaa this is the funniest comment 🤣 thank you for making my day
Thank you so much, it was very interesting to know how this business works.
I might think it is a rhombus at times. Currently some of the popular plants from the 80's are gaining interest again...
Haha yes theres a bit of cycle sometimes. Like fashion.
Agree! 💯👍
❤️❤️
Love❤
Thank you ❤️
Nice Video
Thank you ❤️

In India the ones you're referring to common plants are still super costly.
In Australia we only have one person who sells exotic staghorn ferns. I got banned from buying from them because I questioned them as to why they ripped me off. They hung up phone and sent a text message saying that they didn’t want to do business anymore
I have a feeling there must be more sellers. Staghorn ferns are quite popular in aussie with many endemic species there.
@ there is only one person selling staghorn ferns that are not native to our country. They own the whole market
❤
❤️ thank you
My rooted nodes of Devil Monstera cost less than 50$ I'm in USA.
Talk about Singapore Market
Singapore… itself interesting market… different from the rest. Its a trading hub with very very small production.
Alot of the rare stuff @onlyplants
❤❤❤❤❤
Makasih 💌
am in africa zambia how can i get some of the plants
Hello, I dont sell plants 🤤 but some of the guests in my channel do. I hope you saw some of these cool episodes and discover cool growers! 🙌🏽
No bende plantas ah bueno están muy lindas saludó desdé Colombia Cartagena
Holla 🙌🏽
Bahkan lebih parahnya di Indonesia kalau ketahuan jual dibawah harga market bakalan diserang seller habis2an 😂
😅😅
nice explanation, could you moot about monkey bussines at plant bussines for next episode.
There hasnt been monkey business in the plant market in years (that I know of). Although there was decades ago before the advent of social media and international trade. I feel the plants today respond to supply and demand realistically.
😂 THE PLANTS DONT CARE IF YOU CALL THEM RARE OR COMMON......
THEY ONLY CARE THAT YOU LOVE AND APPRECIATE THEIR BEAUTY....🙏🍀🙏
We need to print this on a mug haha
Plus… when a plant suddenly goes from €30,000 to €1,000 it suddenly looks cheap in comparison, despite still being ridiculous
Haha it will not suddenly become 1,000 🤤 it might take many years. Unless someone dumb went along and tissue cultured it… I hope they dont do it yet!
I wonder if the difference between the growers in Indonesia versus China/Thailand/U.S. is not so much a short-term mindset as much as a lack of capital. You need a lot more capital to tide you over while you are mass propagating.
I feel like its more attitude and culture. You can see this behavior across other industries/business landscape and even government.
Yooo 🤙🏼
🙌🏽🙌🏽 yo
They lose value so much 😅 But the relationship is important but I won't splurge on them knowing they will come down.
Haha this is why we wait for the right time to buy them.
Or you can buy them early but turn it into profit, so you can buy more 🤤
Theres so many ways to enjoy plants
