I salute you for making the huge effort to restore the original wood staircase. I run out of patience at times, restoring our old house, but videos like this remind me to slow down and take it seriously. The original materials are precious and the effort pays off forever.
I had many "bright " ideas when I lived in a cottage in Wales. I found that some jobs would try the patience of a saint. At least you did'nt give up and I think it was so worth it in the end - the stairs looks great. loved the video. thanks
Feel your pain! I live in a 30s house. Beautiful pine floors. Took forever to strip back paint and varnish. Think we went through every decade!! But well worth it. Complimented on how good they look. But wouldn’t want to do it again!! Haha x
Hi Mr C, I found you over 2 year’s ago, and the first video I watched was you painting your kitchen cupboard’s. My house was built in 1907 so any D.I.Y always seems a bigger job than I thought. I took the handrail off my stairs when we decorated the hall stairs and landing. I removed many layers of paint to get it to the natural wood. That was hard enough, so my stair’s have carpet on them. You did a lovely job your stairway look’s great. A labour of love for sure. 💙😊
I stripped my bannister back few years ago,took me about 9 months then decided it was too damaged and repainted in white. It was one of the worst jobs I've ever undertaken ,smelly,messy and time consuming. Well done for persevering ,well worth it they look brilliant xx
Brings back bad memories from a house I lived in and had a bright idea to do the same it does look lovely though when done I would definitely paint the spindles grey or blue would look nice not a fan of green but good look. Taking off spindle paint at an historic Italianate Villa style one block away from our historic I.V. was with glass broken edge to scrape with. Later in our own place I used a thing called the boiler. It was a slightly curved end scraper like a finger not round along the sides but with four sides. A nose picker sort of device. A tool I very much treasured,that Booker for safely removing layered on paint. How I enjoyed seeing you work out solutions to the findings under the pulled up carpeting. My best to you as you travel thro these times. Stay safe.
Lots of inspiration. Ive also been DIYing my stairs over a number of years. The people who laid our carpet in the 90s used about 50 nails on one step! Watch that step with the crack on the edge. If it breaks further, where its on the edge I have visons of someone taking a tumble down the stairs.
Great patience to do the staircase. I think they are called "spindles" the upright bits. Well done looks great and in character with the era of the flat. X

18 years since our stairs became nekkid...… hoping to finally finish them this year. They are similar to yours (with the cheese wedge shaped ones that turn) we've put little garden decking mini lights at the right side (as you go up) so they uplight at night. yep that's as far as our makeover went, lol. Your stairs look great now, very much enjoyed your finished look.
Your stairs look fab & some great tips in the video! I'm just starting to strip the paint from my 1940's stairs (after removing the old carpet, pulling out all the old nails/staples etc) It's been a difficult few days, but seeing your staircase journey has given me hope, thank you!
Looks fabulous. We live in an old Victorian house too. We can never just do ‘DIY’ it always turns into a massive job. No straight walls, floors are wavy!!! I think you should paint the spindles the same colour as the doors upstairs??
Been watching for about a year saw you with Kate. Truly enjoy your content. Sometimes home do it yourself is opening a can of worms. Couldn’t help but laugh because my stairs have been a work in progress for years. Pulled off carpet and luckily all I did was paint the risers white. Left trends natural like you but with 3 sons the risers get black marks constantly. Oh well! Your stairway looks amazing. Good job!

This is the project I'm contemplating right now. I had looked into cladding the treads but don't really have the funds for that part, and painting and attaching plywood for the risers.
Yes, paint the spindles! You may want to consider some wood conditioner product for the treads if you arent going to seal them though. Thanks for sharing the process - a lot of work for 15 stairs but what a difference it has made.
Just found this. I've done the same with my 123 year old staircase - still at it, which is how I found your video. I'm not planning on painting, but instead will use a wax sealer for the raw wood. Have you since added moulding or trim to where the treads, risers and wall meet? It might cover any gaps you don't like. They look great! It is a lot of work! But worth it.
Well I was thinking of doing my stairs, now, I don't know! Lol. They look great though!! I would do the spindles in black. I like the natural wood and white with black!? Found you a year ago, and binged I believe until I caught up! Love love your videos! You are really authentic, and that's why I continue to watch!
I am having stair envy! I love how bright your staircase is. We have an open spiral staircase but it's in the middle of the house so no beautiful light like yours!
Just came across your video as iv done the some thing iv sanded all my stair case back and it has taken a week and hours and hours of electric sanding and I'm still a few panels to go , it really is hard work but still better than paying a grand!

I rather rashly decided to pull up the horrible old carpet a few months ago on the stairs in the flat I live in - it was gross and I needed to improve the space (haha it's not that improved at the moment!) but thank you because I am at the stripping stage - I've done 4 stairs so far - got another 11 to do - I find it so tedious! and also hurts my shoulders and neck so I'm just going to take my time - do like a stair a day or 3 a week or something, it's reassuring that it took you quite abit of time. I don't think I'll be doing the whole flat as originally intended!

Sooooo much work ! Wow Well done ! I love that you live in a Victorian. My last home was 50 yr old (a condo actually) and required a lot of work over the years. Now I live in a brand new home, and even though every thing is brand new, I want to change things lolol You did a great job, on a difficult project.
Vlogging my stair revamp and typed into RUclips about stair transformation and never knew how hard it is after ripping up carpet! Glad this video had the same issues 😄 paint stripping, tacks and nails etc… wish I never started!
Love the stairs all that hard work paid off and I like the imperfections it sort shows the history. Agree with you paint them a darker colour it will look less clinical and add warmth. Such a fab job done. Oh you looked like a we baby lol you look so much better now bit fuller in the face which suits you.
I think the stairs look lovely. I think your idea for painting the spindles/balusters either a grey, blue or green sounds really nice. When we moved into our house the people before had completely removed them so we had to replace them. That was in 2000, they still only have the one stain tester mark on them, still haven't completed it. May paint it white now having seen yours. ❤️

I didn't think of a chisel 🤦🏻♀️ I think after watching I might just paint the whole stairs white and maybe stencil the stair risers now.. We ripped our stair carpet up 15 years ago and my husband only just got round to sorting them out last year ( we did have a lot of work to do in the house first). All he did was sand them and paint them a dark brown which looked nice but now he’s decided to paint them again but a dark grey as our walls are light one and then hopefully he’ll be finished with them. Yours look amazing you can also get decals for the risers Amazon have a good selection.

I've been do I g up an old Victorian house for ten years. Including stripping the stairs. Which was indeed a massive pain in the neck and took ages . I used paint stripper , wire wool and a little scraper. Tons of sand papper. But well chuffed that I've saved a 1000 quid!!! Yippee! I've also striped the skirting boards , floors and a door frame. Door frames are the worse but will never need painting again. People often remark now much I like my wood when they first come. Yes all these things take so long but worth it.

Looks fab, Imperfections and all. Perhaps the spindles could be Charcoal grey? The chair you covered with the wallpaper from Kate suits the space so well too.
Good job on the stairs hun they look fab, I did mine in my old house and it took forever and a lot of hard work but so worth it in the end isn't it. I burnt out 2 brand new paint burners so in the end I did same as you scraped but then sanded a bit too. You've done a great job they do look fab.x
I have a 1910 sandstone bungalow (USA). So far I've removed the stairway carpet and carpet strips and the nails and staples from 3 stairs. Mine also has layers of paint on the sides and bare in the middle where a runner was. The stairs are actually in very good condition. BUT....as much as I'd like to have the treads stripped, I have no interest in the hassle. I plan to paint the treads a dark brown and the risers white. Then paint the newel post and railing the dark brown with white spindles. Oh, and I'm thinking about adding a 1/4 mixture of sand in the paint for a non-skid surface.
I discovered you through your christmas videos a few years ago but done the stupid thing and didn't subscribe !! I then rediscovered you the following christmas and i hit that Subscribe button. Ever since i have watched every single video of yours. As i said in the live chat we done something similar with our staircase but replaced the banister with glass it brightened the hallway up so much.

We tried doing this to our staircase 30 years ago but gave up and painted the rails and spindles and put carpet on the stairs, well done for perseverance lol x

Looks fab, Imperfections and all. Perhaps the spindles could be Charcoal grey? The chair you covered with the wallpaper from Kate suits the space so well too.

Good job on the stairs hun they look fab, I did mine in my old house and it took forever and a lot of hard work but so worth it in the end isn't it. I burnt out 2 brand new paint burners so in the end I did same as you scraped but then sanded a bit too. You've done a great job they do look fab.x
I have a 1910 sandstone bungalow (USA). So far I've removed the stairway carpet and carpet strips and the nails and staples from 3 stairs. Mine also has layers of paint on the sides and bare in the middle where a runner was. The stairs are actually in very good condition. BUT....as much as I'd like to have the treads stripped, I have no interest in the hassle. I plan to paint the treads a dark brown and the risers white. Then paint the newel post and railing the dark brown with white spindles.
Oh, and I'm thinking about adding a 1/4 mixture of sand in the paint for a non-skid surface.
I discovered you through your christmas videos a few years ago but done the stupid thing and didn't subscribe !! I then rediscovered you the following christmas and i hit that Subscribe button. Ever since i have watched every single video of yours.
As i said in the live chat we done something similar with our staircase but replaced the banister with glass it brightened the hallway up so much.

We tried doing this to our staircase 30 years ago but gave up and painted the rails and spindles and put carpet on the stairs, well done for perseverance lol x

Oh wow your stairs look amazing!! Appreciate it was a lot of hard work for you, but what a great lockdown project. I would definitely paint the balustrade a darker colour. A carpet runner or rug would finish it off on the landing.
