    I did this but purely to prove to my son that you can take a sucker, put it in dirt and it’ll grow a whole new plant. He doubted me so we started 10 plants from suckers and they are now producing beautiful tomatoes.

      I did this also, instead of starting all new seeds. I started a sucker from my fave varieties. (I just didnt have it in me to baby more seedlings at the time) The suckers did not get as big or grow as many fruit as the mother plant but I did get fruit. (I still am from mother and suckers-zone 5) Did you all find this to be true?

      I walked in the front door of a pet store yesterday and was accosted by the store owner. He forced me to use hand sanitizer. Hate and fear is tremendous right now yes. I’m a bit over it. I can see people’s understanding but their understanding does not incorporate those who are allergic to most cosmetics, lotions and yes even hand sanitizers. I am very sensitive to methylisothiazolinone. I’m just using this as an example. This kind of behavior is everywhere and a lot is not even founded on common sense. I think a lot of these folks spreading fear are just hate filled in the first place and they are using a bad situation to take advantage of others or feel in control. As to the above hand sanitizer. That stuff immediately makes my skin feel like it is being burned. I had to walk into the store next door and ask the owner if I could use their restroom to wash it off. Hand sanitizer to be in a pet store? I’m fully vaccinated too.

      What does "try August tomatoes" mean? Luke says he planted 45-day variety seed July 1st, transplanted Aug. 2nd, and had first pick August 30th, continuing til frost. There is barely anything "August" about this. For me, my indeterminate varieties started from seed in April(!) and ripe fruit is in August and September, til frost.

    I planted the determinate variety Patio in February. They produced from mid-April through early June, stopped during the heat waves of June- early August and now they're flowering and producing fruit again. I live in zone 9, I had planned to pull them out in early August and move the fall plants I started in June from the backyard to the front patio to replace the Patio variety. Now I have both. I've double checked and Patio is a determinate and not an indeterminate. They haven't put on any height, just more flowers and fruit.

    • @jackbishop7693
      @jackbishop7693 3 года назад +3

      Yeah, me too! I'm in zone 9b and planted a determinate in February as well- after the first flush, they waited a month or two before flowering & fruiting again. And now, once again, they're setting new flowers. The only definitive difference I can think of would be the temperatures down here, but I have no clue how that'd interplay with their determinate genetics. Curious either way

My Roma seem to be doing ok, but only has one green tomato on it so far. It does have a few blooms, so I’m hopeful. I’ve learned first to buy lots of seeds, because in August I couldn’t find any seeds left in any of our local stores. The second thing I learned is you want to buy plants buy them before August because stores either sell out or get rid of them, even in the greenhouse nursery. WOW I would not think that you can start planting by May 15 in Michigan. In MA where I am located, for the past THREE years we have not been safe to plant without a frost until June 7! On the other hand, its fantastic how long we enjoy peas, lettuce and other cool weather crops such as tatsoi. Wish I did San Marzanos this year but I used my space this year for heirlooms. I miss the SM! On the other hand, from my compost I have had many volunteers and they are strong and coming along while the older plants are passing their time, as you say. They will be late producers and maybe I will need to cover them to keep them warm.

    This looks like a good idea for areas where you get blight.i live in a high desert and we don’t get blight here, it’s very arid. My tomato plants were planted in May and they still look great! But good for you! It’s kind of amazing they will grow so fast.

    I start tomatoes from seeds in July and August nearly every year. They are my favorite thing from the garden and I want them year round. Just put 13 new plants in the ground Saturday that I started about three weeks ago from seed. I did this in Virginia and again here in South Carolina.

    Yesterday was 99 degrees in central California, but should be in the 80s rest of week. I followed Luke’s advice and started my second batch of tomatoes and got them planted mid-July. Starting to see some blush on my Ace 55 or Rutgers (don’t remember which variety I planted). I’m a true believer, but next year I may try planting suckers for my second batch.

    Great video Luke. I had a hailstorm take out my tomatoes this year but I had seedlings that I couldn’t give away. So bang I had plants available to plant. I’m doing a bunch of cherry tomatoes here in GA. I can’t wait to have more tomatoes in the fall.

    Luke, you are my go to guy for all things in the garden. We just moved from Oregon to North Idaho. Little shorter growing season so we decided to build a 18x 30 greenhouse this spring. I didn’t need to plant a fall harvest of tomatoes because my indeterminate tomatoes are still producing! Appreciate the time you take to share with us all your vast knowledge.

    I did an experiment this year. I planted seeds for Atomic Grape and Black Cherry tomatoes at the beginning of July in the ground in Northeast PA. I will soon have ripe tomatoes on them. If I remember right, I think I saw you talking about doing late planting of tomatoes when I decided to try it.

    I followed your suggestion and planted Moscovitz tomato seeds in pots in my house on July 1. I planted 6 plants in the ground on July 26. First blossom August 1. The plants look great but so far no tomatoes. No bees for buzz pollinating. Fingers crossed, I'll have fall tomatoes. Or maybe even Christmas tomatoes!

    I have 4 clones going right now, and one volunteer. The oldest clone is an Early Ann that has 12 fruits on it, the volunteer cherry has some small fruits, and one of the cherry clones has some small fruits. My seven foot tall Orange Cherry has about 100 fruits (on it's way out), and my Super Sweet 100 Cherry has over 100 fruits on it, but is looking pretty stressed. I also have a Sweet Grape Tomato plant that is still looking healthy and has dozens of "ready to pick" fruits. PS: I live in South Central Minnesota. I think my next move will be pruning any and all blossoms to make the plants focus on the existing fruit. Cheers! Grow BIG!!!
