I’ve never had a fall garden and I’m using fabric bags. I followed the timing for our frost date in Zone 8b and I worked backwards. Even doing that, some of the seeds just wouldn’t establish because it’s still hot (we’re still in the 90’s). Anyway, I have so many seeds that I just keep re seeding what isn’t working. My peas have gone crazy. The spinach is doing well as well as oak leaf lettuce. The romaine is struggling as well as the broccoli so I’m just keeping notes for next year.
Yes, I'm in 8b.. and I'm struggling to keep my bok choy and others alive because of the heat. I started some inside. Just waiting for it to cool off. 😔
Here's to a new fall. I'll be planting some tomatoes, my last cucumber crop, broccoli, kale, soft greens, carrots, and lots of peas. Best of luck to everyone
Great information here as always. Thanks! My cabbages, kale and walking onions, etc. are planted. Here in East Tenn. in the hills near the Smokies those onions don't die back. They have acclimated beautifully. Have a great weekend!
This is my first gardening year as I purchased my first home (and yard) this spring. I’ve dabbled with summer veggies (2 tomatoes, 1 cherry tomato, 2 eggplants, 1 pepper). Now Ive learned a little and am ready to challenge myself with a full fall garden. I just started the seeds a week ago (in Georgia) and seedlings are doing great! Can’t wait to see what comes this season: cauliflower, lettuce, carrots, beans, choi, Brussels, squash!
Thanks for the better tips! Just waiting for the temps to lower some here in the Central Valley in California. Ready to see what grows this fall! Again thanks!
Yes….anywhere from November to February. Never really know where in between. Have used bails of straw to see through the winter, carry it on in the summer for holding moisture. Seems to help.
We live almost dead center between Fresno and Bakersfield which get pretty dern hot and dry in summers. Then in the low 20’s in winter. Great for oranges but plays havoc a lot of other crops. Okra and peppers love summer!
Hi Jeff! Sure wish I had started some seeds for my fall plants. Didn't think of it early enough. Next year!! So glad to see the "water in the hole" 😊 !! I did get my peas in, tho . Happy gardening and have a wonderful day!!!
I know Eileen, its such a weird one to time. Rarely are people thinking about starting their fall seedlings in July, but that's when they are normally started! Great to hear about the peas!
Tis hard to believe a whole year has passed and it is time to plant my "garlic" all over again! Year 1 was splendido. My first year. Hoping for a repeat :)
Hi Jeff thanks once again thank you for info and encouragement. I'm in UK as I think you may know. My planting is going to be experimental but based on all your great information. I have a small walk in greenhouse, the one with the 6 shelves. I am going to try various veg and see how it goes.
Thank you so much! I’m a new gardener who started over the summer and fell inlove with in. Will be looking up the region and zones for gardening to help.
Thanks! I started mesclun mix from seed a few weeks ago in pots and sowed Komatsuna spinach seeds last week. I'm going to keep then outside and bring them in during the evenings. Hopefully I can extend our gardening into November here in MA.
Hello Jeff , here in zone 9a we've been getting lots and lots of rain , the problem with it is it's washing all of the nutrients out of my planting pots . I feel like I've wasted all of the compost that I put into them .
Those Fall harvests only come for me in the autumn months if I remembered to plant those veggies by the end of July. I only have about 3-4 weeks before it gets really cold at this point. I planted some cabbages at the beginning of August, and it's looking like I'll be lucky if I get cabbages from the plants.
Hi Jeff! I like your gardening video so much love to hear all the details about planting what new gardener really needs it. Anyway keep posting thanks so much can’t wait for your new video update.
Hi Joe, from Springfield Missouri I have a challenge for you if you haven’t done it so far made a video of it. Can you start preparing for your spring gardening and also if you have a small space and you want to plant a lot of crops in it can you start really early and get them transplanted into the ground And then they die off replant different crops to go into the fall more like planting in early Spring and planting in lake summer to get a fall harvest
Really encouraging information Jeff. Makes me feel confident to start a fall garden especially the no weeding part!!! 🤣 I’ve grown brassicas in the greenhouse. Is it best to harden them off first?
Good day mate. Will you keep mulching your gardens right up till you harvest your crop. I'm in Queensland Australia but I love watching 👀 you. Thanks Tim
Timing doesn't apply to TX. Our weather is bipolar. Just when you think fall weather starts, mother nature decides to slap us with triple digit heat for weeks.
Jeff have you figured out yet how I can link my Amazon purchases to you, so I can help you out. My family is on that damn companies app every day, should have stock. Let me know, you have made me a much better gardener, would like to give back. Thx Tim
Hi, avocados are 2/$1 at Super One Store right now. I'd like to start a few trees, one for ea of my several adult children. Is Oct an acceptable time to start them? I live in zone 9 of Louisiana. How many yrs before the tree starts fruiting? Will it grow well in pots? enlarging the container as the tree needs. I am subscribed to your channel and find it very helpful for my gardening endeavors. Tks for all you do :)
I'm in South Florida, & have done this... so here's a couple of tips. They can be killed by a freeze, or several days of hard frost. Most sensitive under 4-5 feet tall. • If you get them to 3ft- put them in the biggers pot you can, they don't like frequent transplanting. • The green type can grow HUGE. Not sure about the Haas. • They can take a long time to fruit. That said, a good avocado tree produces lots of versitile food, & are a source of income for many. 🥑🍀🍀🍀
This video comes a bit late, doesn't it? My first average frost is before fall officially begins (mid-September). Is there anything I can plant after the first frost?
Depends on where you live in the world. For some people, its early. I wouldn't plant anything outdoors after frost...but it also depends on how harsh your winter is....not every climate or winter is the same.
When do I plant garlic in Florida 9b? I had some garlic in the fridge and almost all of the cloves were sprouting. I put them in a 5 gallon bucket, hopefully it's not too early. Thanks 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
Hardneck garlic is always planted about a month before your first fall frost date for temperate regions. For warmer climates, plant your softneck garlic on the coldest day of the year.

100% a common problem Carmella with heavy fall rains. Spring too for that matter. Mulch....think blankets of mulch is the only way to prevent it.
