I purchased two on my first gardening tools second hand at a flea market in Brigham City, a garden rake and a ""manurer" shovel in 1974. I use the rake frequently as it is the only rake of that type I own, the wooden handle is quite aged but still straight, the shovel, not so much. If opportunity should present itself, I will use your lists, thank you.

Congratulations on your 100th quickie! 😉😁
Seriously though, i love these short but sweet, straight to the point videos. I also love the recap videos as sometimes i have a memory like a goldfish and it reminds me to do something that you mentioned in the quickie that i forgot to write down on my to do list!
Back to the garlic, i found when planting my garlic for the first time, in Nov that i was too late but it turned out that it was far too early in reality.
From the websites that i have checked out, in my area of London, UK, i am in Zone 9 and our first frost date is Jan 1st.
I am trying out our first autumn planting, instead of just chucking down a packet of listed "green manure" or just Rye and Vetch as it stated on the packet. I did use the remaining seeds up of this on the "clay" bed. We amend this a bit but as it is a boarder bed and not a raised bed we couldn't chuck a lot on when rebuilding it. The sprouts that are already there seem to like it as well.
I gave it a light hoeing and put down some blood fish and bone, pearlite and the seeds. There is still a bit of wood chip but we have been having problems with rats digging up stuff. Both new runner beans (i think one is doing ok though), potatoes containers, asparagus bed, even around the newish pear tree!
Some good/ bad news. We caught a rat today in a trap bless it. They normally just set it off. This isn't the bigger rat that comes out in daylight and casually walks past the conservatory windows though. This poor thing was smaller and grey. The big fella has light brown fur on its back. Hubby disposed of it for the foxes to find. Hopefully that is one less thing for the neighbours yappy dogs to complain about, other than the open shed of rabbits, guinea pigs and hamsters they have in there at the back of the garden. Before they moved in it was a fox den in the garden and it still really hasn't been sealed off. Their soil level is also higher making it easier for foxes and cats to jump over the fence into our garden. When we had a dog it was quite a fright for them but no alas, after her passing, it is free game.
Sorry as i have a tendency to digress and go on a tangent. I have diagnosed PTSD and Dyslexia so i don't know?
So garlic. I plan to choose and order them next week before half term holidays, in between recording my clips. I went with Suttons, last year but with a lot of their orders, they were delayed and with the garlic that turned up a month late was really small and not that great. They also replaced the best variety, that they had run out of, with an inferior duplication. It was also replacing a soft neck with a hard neck, so out of 4 vars, i only had one soft neck. The softneck was also the first "ready" and more decent.
I think i am also going to put them in the fridge until planting. I might even freeze them for a week in between. I might also try elephant garlic for funnsies, as i love doing experiments in the garden.
Total goldfish moment writing this but we are going to the Isle of Wight soon to pack some more of my late mother in laws stuff and they have garlic farms there! Such a cool island with lots of things to do. Lots of sandy beaches compared to the south coast of the main land. 4g is trash there though and in some places, you get a Welcome to France SMS. Used to be funny before brexit. Broadband and phone isn't that great either. If you are active and have kids, it's a must.
After the green light for the rebar and pulmbling trelis/frame for the main bed we need to measure up for the piping.
Can you talk about winterising plants please? Topping off plants, etc. I like your more science based stuff. Going to take a sucker rather than a self seed, this autumn to over winter and see what happens.

Wow, that's a late frost date, we're in the same zone but mid November is ours. Do the rats in your area eat the garlic? Sometimes ours will unearth them.....but they don't eat them. A subscriber the other day said that her squirrels eat her newly planted garlic like CANDY! Crazy eh?
Yes, winterizing videos are coming up as soon as our weather turns. Its hard to film winter videos when the backdrop is still 24C and crazy sunny skies, LOL! 🙂 Take care!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I panicked as we had a low of 3c and dug up our only sweet bell peppers that we usually grow in doors. This was " what the heck" and plant out due to spider mites. It is on its own with baby peppers, from shop bough peppers as i like to experiment. Nights are back up to 11c.
The only real problem was in May/ June, when we planted out the last of the tomatoes. We had a really dry spring. I remember it got really hot for me go out. so plus 25 c.
Our nasturtiums were late to pick up in the containers. They are our "trap crops", so they got on the garlic and runner beans. Aphids went all in and white fly on the sprouts. Not much pressure from snails and slugs, although i see some now with the wet weather. Also even more shield bug larvae and splitting tomatoes.
Our fire path/alleyway is on the other side of the main bed. We saw some dug out holes and put some rat traps but it was caught on the other side where the bird table and straw is stored that we bought for the mushroom spawn that turned up late.
Good news is the box in the bathroom is making oyster mushrooms! Again the spawn was sold out and then delayed. out door mushrooms no go on the asparagus bed.
Today's tomato harvest was still 1.7 kg. My kid screamed! We had beef stew and dumplings tonight. They raged at the sight of tomatoes again but yesterday we had home made ravioli with home made pasta sauce, which they loved..... The ravioli was frozen leftovers and the pasta sauce was canned in a glass jar. I really hate "jarred sauces", so it was really weird preparing this meal. The sauce already had onions, peppers and tomatoes plus the other stuff like garlic, herbs and spices. So yes really weird using a jar of sauce, when you are a cook from scratch type of person.
We had "school sunflowers" planted in the main bed, they got really big. The squirrels emerged from no where and the pigeons had a field day. Sunflowers went on the back clay bed. There were fatalities with the kid planting the sunflowers this year. TBF, they were planted behind the pear tree on the back bed. It is also where the sprout are. Interestingly, the stronger sprout plant that was planted on the right, with more sun, ended up being the more stunted out of the 4 that had more shade. Whilst the other 3 slanted towards to the right for more sunlight, they are the stronger plants.
The rain has finally graced our lands in abundance! still on the hose pipe ban and a few low temps. 3c was our most extrreme due to clear skies. Back up to about, i guess, 17/11c day/night temps.
Was a massive drop in temps. I am keeping a rough extreme temp guide on my seed spreadsheet tabs. 1/9/2022 was 25/15 c. The week after, we had heavy rains and a drop in temps.
The birds and rats returned early and the birds attacked my spinach. I have covered them with some old net curtain until we get the new trellis installed.
Also when the rain came, the tomatoes started splitting and the shield/stink bug larvae started attacking them.
On a tangient, do you find your fridge/ freezer starts going wild when the temps drop? We don't ever have to de frost our freezer any more but it started leaking and the radiator at the back got hot. both were packed, fridge needed veg processing but the must have fan froze up and was now defrosting into the freezer. Luckily, we have the space to keep the old fridge/freezer in the old brick workshop that was left here. 95% of it is home produce. It's not a massive US style FF but will be a tight squeeze into a traditional small ff here, whilst we let it defrost and reset.
They are talking about 3 hour power cuts here in winter in the UK, so i want to make sure that it is fully working before then. Currently, the defrosted buts from the fridge go into the freezer section, which buggers up the bottom drawer and then leaks on the floor when there is too much.
So glad that i cleared out a big shelf in he workshop, to make two shelves for my home made canned produce. So glad that i cleared the cupboards out. Making space for my Mother in Law's kitchen/ dining stuff and the last of the cupboard foods that i left that was still in date.
Whilst i like busy, a death, stroke, heatwave and a gov going under, wasn't on my bingo cards this year. It makes it hard to live with long term illnesses a little bit harder and sometimes the big girl knickers are in the wash.
What i would say is that i like our community here and feel safer to be able to "speak" on an online platform.

@@AnyKeyLady i Loved reading your 'letters'! Really, it feels like i just got a nice long letter from a good friend i haven't seen in a while. 🙂 I'm in zone 10 here in South Florida, USA. (Sure wish we were more United these days, if more people worried about their gardens than crazy politics, we would be better off!) It seems the rats are a global problem. The ones they call Norway rats arrived at Port Everglades on cargo ships & loved our mild climate & miles & miles of canals, & have spread inland for years! They are plump & healthy, & ive got to put 1/4 inch wire 'hardware cloth' cages over tender seedlings. 1inch chicken wire laid down on top of sweet potato beds & other root crops has kept them safe from critters.
Sympathy on dealing with the aftermath of death in the family. I've lost Dad in 2017, hubby Gary in 2018, friend Sam in 2019, Mom was May before last, & now my daughter's Mother in Law! Trying to mix in those things (of theirs) you want to keep, can be quite an undertaking. Dealing with attention deficit disorder, those brain tangents can pull you off track before you know it! Been dealing with it all my life, too! Hubby & son both dyslexics- so i understand , there, too!
Sending you Best Wishes from over here, I'm concerned for all in Britain & Europe this winter. There's a very calm, retional guy on RUclips, Kris , who recently posted a video on saving energy & money this winter. His channel is called City Prepping. He used to work with disaster response teams. Lives in California, & doesn't go crazy doom & gloom, like most of those prep people. I've found his recommendations very helpful, though i believe Jeff is superior in gardening advice, by far! Kris admits he is still trying to get better at gardening. Bless & Keep you!
      Stay Safe out there!

On the other hand, South Florida's winters are relatively warm, & it's our dry season, so if it hasn't rained for 7 days- i water everything. But only on the "less than 1 tenth of an inch in 7 days" rule. If there's even 1 decent shower i leave them, & all established plants alone. Climate rules.

Thanks for a great video. So, I have about 18 cu. yds. of leaves coming later in the month. My garden is 1760 sq. ft., currently I have cover crop planted on it. What do you think of this plan: In the spring, I'm going to cut the cover crop, then spread 3" of leaves over it and cover that with 5.3 ounce weed fabric. I'll plant through holes in the weed fabric and let the leaves along with the cut cover crop decompose over the spring/summer. I already have some pretty good soil which started as hard clay. I want to continue to feed it and I have no place to store the leaves except on my garden. Am I crazy or might this work?

On a similar subject the seed garlic I purchased had seven or eight lobes per bulb but mine, although similar in circumference, had only three or four. Do you know why? Thank you for your time.

@@erichaskell that is interesting Eric. I wonder. As for number of bulbs, the softnecks tend to have more, but usually the harvest has similar numbers compared to the seed source. Only thing that would change that would be smaller bulb size overall

Just got mine in last weekend! Do you have to keep watering them after planting?

Hi Stella, not where I live. Being planted in the fall, right before the rainy season, I literally water my garlic ONCE, and then not again until April of the following year.

Is it ok to plant garlic now? I have bulbs that are starting to sprout. Do I harvest in the fall?

So for the depth, is it the colder the deeper? I’m in Wisconsin and will be planting them in a raised bed.

Yes, the colder it is, the deeper you go and the thicker the mulch. You need more protection/insulation. :-)

Do you water the newly planted garlic on a routine basis or wait to see growth to water it? I've tried to find the answer and nobody ever seems to mention it

Water once at planting and then i let nature do the rest. I DO mulch heavily because we have pretty hot weather. If it is super dry for over a week i will try and give it a watering because I am paranoid but I dont know that its necessary. My garlic over the last 2 years have all come out great.
