Whenever you hear this sound for real, you know it’s fixin’ to be a VERY bad day. Take it from a guy whose elementary school was almost hit by a Category 7/10 tornado (about EF-3). And this storm didn’t wait until 15:00 (3:00 PM), either. I’ll never forget that day as long as I live. It was 1 June 2007. We were just finishing up our lunch and lining up to go back to my third grade class when the emergency sirens were activated. We ran to our classrooms, and the teachers closed the doors and the window shades as we students huddled in the furthest corner from the windows. My teacher did a pretty job keeping us calm by letting us have some good conversation, sing some songs, etc. The power went out and then the wind began to howl as the storm rapidly approached. The tornado itself came less than a kilometer from the school before it shifted direction and narrowly missed us. When we were finally dismissed for the day, the school made it through relatively unscathed, but the surrounding houses were either completely gone or in very bad shape. When I got to my house, however, not a single leaf fell, as if the storm never even happened. I couldn’t believe my luck. Fortunately, nobody died, although there were some injuries involved. My dad, as an orthopedic surgeon, fixed one of those injuries while I helped clean up the community ballparks on the following day.
