- The moment of truth has arrived along with the most stressful and exciting day! Was the $697 Yanmar 2GM rebuild worth it, will it start? We spent over a month at anchor in the ICW at New Smyrna Beach and undertook our biggest challenge yet in sailboat maintenance. Rebuilding a diesel engine. With a cracked piston and so many more things broken or in need of TLC it was quite the learning process.

This was the best series on a Yanmar rebuild I've ever found. You showed steps that others glossed over or didn't record, and your video quality was outstanding. Thank you! By the way, I don't think it matters much, but the next time you swap out that thermostat you might reposition it so the little hole is up. In automotive engines, that hole is universally positioned at the top, to allow trapped air to escape past a closed thermostat. Yours is an interesting design, cooled by outside water rather than antifreeeze, so maybe it is different than standard automotive engines. What was the original cause of your piston crack? Did water from the exhaust elbow get into a cylinder?
Thank you very much. We wanted to cover each step along the way and hopefully help anyone who was nervous about doing it themselves. Thank you for the tip about the thermostat. I will double check it next time we remove it. All I could find was to keep the hole lined up with the holes where the water passes (50 50 chance of getting it wrong) but if it is ment to go up then that makes things simpler. Unfortunately we never worked out why exactly the piston cracked which is not ideal since it could happen again. We over heated 2 times on our way south and figure that may of had something to do with it but never found anything that was a tell tale sign. And it was a progressive problem that slowly go worst. Increased oil burn and blowby until it just would not start anymore.

I know right! Such a nice sound, especially when you havent heard it in a while. Although I prefer just the sails and water splashing the hull.
You both did a great job rebuilding a motor in such a small environment. Everything was labeled, cleaned and kept clean during the process. That initial startup always gave me the jitters. Cheers!
Thank you very much Alan. We made it work but it may have been much easier and took less time if we had a better work area. It does give us more confidence if we ever have issues again.

Thank you Roy. We are so happy to have the engine as a piece of mind when all else fails or when the anchor drags. Maybe one day we will see 50k but until then we will enjoy the small but wonderful following we do have.

@@WildlyIntrepid No but I have rebuilt a few engines from top to bottom like yourselves. Lapping valves brings back memories. I have a 4 cylinder Yanmar which is similar but just a bit bigger. I found your channel when I was looking for videos on removing diesel injectors.
So you must have learnt a few tricks after doing it a few times yourselves. Those little yanmars are great

It's hard to describe how great it felt. Everytime we start the engine we get excited.
Good job. As for the diesel knock, it could be the injector timing, maybe something is worn in the pump. I think you can get different thickness shims for the pump to change it.
Thanks for the tip Craig. Its not something we wanted to dig into unless we needed. Tbh im not sure if the sound is normal or not but if we have further issues ill have to check that out.

I also have a yanmar 2gm, and I also just rebuilt it, and I am also very nervous about turning it over lol 😆 (I also have the same battery charger 😆)
We totally can relate with being nervous to turn it over. Hopefully it all goes smooth and it runs like new for you. What was wrong with yours?
@@WildlyIntrepid well, I was sailing on Lake Michigan last August, in Chicago, while trying to sail around the Lake. The engine died on me at 7 AM just after getting it fired up to leave an anchorage after a front blew through raising the seas, even in the protected anchorage. I ended up sailing home from Chicago with no engine. I had the local yanmar service people check it out, and it was "dead" with less than 1/3rd of spec compression on both cylinders (165 vs 435psi). So I removed the engine and began rebuilding it, after debating about putting in an electric drive. I had the internal stuff done by an actual engine rebuild shop. I had the high pressure fuel pump done by a diesel pump specialist, too. Put it all back together in November, but I live in MI so it sat in the barn all winter. I've basically got the fuel to the high pressure pump, and now according to the manual, I HAVE to turn it over to bleed the fuel injector lines.. but since it's so tight, and I can barely crank it by hand, I'm extremely nervous. Watching your video has given me some hope that all is well. Thanks! Jared
Sounds like you had quite the adventure both sailing without it and fixing it up. It's really satisfying though rebuilding it and learning all about the process. We're crossing our fingers that it'll fire up without any issues. Make sure to bleed the fuel lines well. We had that issue after replacing our diesel tank when we initially bought the boat. When are you splashing?

I have the similar engine 2006 version 2ym15 and learned some things from you before i try to do my rebuild if needed.
My problem seems to be aftet running aground in the river a small leak the previous owner told. me it had then turned into a gusher.
Basically i run the engine and in 30 minutes the idiot light flickers and sounds so i stop engine and there is no oil .
Best i figure is oil erupts out quickly after 30 minutes and it is not a drip drip continious leak.
I tightened up the oil sensor on the side of the engine where i thougjt the leak came from.
Engine ran well for 150 hours the season with a very minor leak i could not find
I had serviced engine air filter oil filter new oil before this 150 hour and new belts and 80 amp clone alternator .
Then the engine started the same gusher leak last october and I put the problem on back burner for the winter.
The posslible reasons are crank case pressure or loose gasket some place or oil exits the breather under pressure or crank case gasket leaks from cracks or bursts from crank case pressure .
Source of crank case pressure might be piston ring or oil ring broken .
Open to ideas as i dont have a lot of room in engine room in this 1969 narrow beam deep keel 30 foot sail boat as the normal engine would have been a very small 6 hp petrol engine in 1969 era .
The problem for me is to be sure I can get the spare parts in the pandemic world .
Who did you get parts from .
I am Ireland based and with parts prefer to go to USA as UK import tax is higher than USA import tax
Hopefully it is minor problem but starting up next week to even if needed remove the engine to fix problem if it is not to costly .
If it is too costly to fix I will look to get a 6 hp ouboard to do me this 2021 season
Thanks for the comment. We used toad marine based in the USA for parts and didn't have any issues ordering during May 2020. Before dismantling your whole engine try to find the leak. Do you have blow by, oil in your air filter, have you done a compression test? Finding the leak might help you decide in which direction to go in. A small mirror helped us tremendously in tight quarters. Best of luck, let us know if you have other questions.

Good on you guys. Ive got a 2QM20 twice now broken 2 valve springs. Im not a bad mechanic myself but no one seems to be ablecto tell me why.
That is strange. But I suppose it's like anything else and over time need to be replaced. But 2 seems odd. Maybe faulty.
