- Having emerged from obscurity in Gary, Indiana, Freddie Gibbs has been rhyming since the days when he was a self-proclaimed Baby Face stepper. Courtesy of his adept flows, exquisite pen and collaborative albums with production legends like Madlib and The Alchemist, Freddie’s hard work has finally begun to pay off after rapping for 15+ years.
Where a record like Pinata was an underground classic, Alfredo scored him his first Grammy nomination, and just two years on, he released what was his long-awaited major label project, Soul Sold Separately, scoring his highest charting performance in the process when the record landed at number 11.
But, unfortunately for Freddie Gibbs, it feels like that from the very moment that he landed at this newfound height, it could all be snatched away at any moment amid a steady stream of self-sabotage from the man himself.

I keep thinking over and over about Insecurities from Shadow of a Doubt. It's so sad seeing Freddie struggle with hurting himself and others for the sake of attention. Acknowledging awareness of it since 2015 yet not changing. Progress isn't linear and making mistakes is part of being human but it brings into question what is he doing if anything to correct things.

Freddie Gibbs is one of my favorite rappers ever but there's some truth to what Akademiks said. None of these rappers moved weight on the level of an Al Capone or Pablo Escobar, if anyone actually believes everything they're rapping about to be true they're dumb. This doesn't mean you can't enjoy their music. Who's out here watching John Wick and thinking Keanu could actually take out a room full of professional killers on his own? I knew somebody just like Freddie. Never trust a word they say and they're always on something. Not surprised. 1985 is still one of my favorite songs of all time. I don't follow any of this social media drama so all this is, is some fun facts. It doesn't effect the music for me.

Freddie said in previous songs his father was a cop but he sold drugs on the side because it didn’t pay much. Allegedly the fights weren’t 1 on 1’s, to my understanding he was jumped but if you BVL you gotta have yo gang riding for you, so it does make me question his gang ties and validity. Freddie never used to do all of this lame stuff until he started becoming more popular, so it seems all the fame went to his head. He’s always trying to be funny on social media, which a lot of times it is funny but you made a joke out of Benny’s situation and that was a serious incident. As far as Akademiks goes, he can’t call anybody soft or anything because Vic Mensa sat right next to him, called him a b!tch and he did nothing. Good video.

He hasn’t fallen off though, he’s stayed consistently as popular, if not more popular than he’s ever been and the music is still great. What’s shown in this video is just some adversity he’s gone through. But I don’t think any of that has gone to the point of ruining his loyal fanbase he’s built.

Let’s do the math. Benny got shot in 2020 of November. Gibbs wrote that status almost a year later. How did Benny think it was about him. So many rappers got shot in that year. I think everybody jumped the gun on it. Benny was mad and Gibbs didn’t care. I think it was a big misunderstanding.
