This video sparked my interest. Yelp, just got through working on an old GE clock radio with the built in cassette player. This treasure from the '60s had two problems? Firstly the rubber belt via motor to flywheel had completely melted making a sticky mess all over the place. Secondly, fm osc/mix transistor had an open base to emitter junction via curved tracer equipped scope test.

Im always surprised how long cheap stuff can last, i had a clock radio and it was a big white beast called Grandstand, i had it for ten years and it was old before i had it.
    The flourescent display died finally.

I have tried to repair many clock radio's over the years, problem is that they can be replaced
for far less that you can charge just for your time.
Most common fault i found was open circuit transformers with an internal thermal fuse that had blown.
I used to limit my time to an hour, after that it went in the bin.
    You can't win them all.

It was not a piece of sheeet when it was new. When the person who owned it bought it and got some use out of it.

It was right there with the GE clock radio that everyone had. I had a nice little Sony with a royal blue VFD. I still have that one and it probably still works. Want to see the inside of that one? They only made the one I have for 1 year and the next year they changed it to an LED display so it looked like everyone else,

@@12voltvids GE did make some amazing alarm clocks. I've got two of the things.. I have a Fidelity I, and one of those clock radio cassette ones...it's a 7.-4956b....That one was very popular yes. The sound from them blows any modern alarm clock out of the water. Even nearly 40 years later the blue VFD looks beautiful.

Hello I have a Yamaha CRX -E30 mini hifi (tuner/cd player)
It seems to be stuck in (boot up loop) turns on ,display scrolls for second then turns off. Nothing appears to have bulged or burnt and checked many solder joints .
Any suggestions you might be able to offer,as where to look.
    With thanks jason
