I know that cutting boots and shoes in half was never your intended purpose for your channel but I am so glad you did. You’ve taught us so much about boots, leather and premium materials versus the alternative. In doing so, you are creating a ripple effect that could go a long way. Exposing brands that are simply relying on their names could really shape the way that some companies handle their production. Accountability. Thanks for the knowledge you share with us!! You put a whole new perspective on my boot and shoe buying experiences.

I actually had a pair of these back in the day and wore them for 4 years straight, living in the northeast. So I was dealing with snow and cold weather a good amount from October - March. They held up surprisingly well. The only reason I stopped wearing them is because the tread in them started wearing out, so I was sliding around on ice way too much. But other than that they were cool and super comfortable, which is their best quality by far. They look pretty slick too.

    • @stephenlamley541
      @stephenlamley541 Год назад

Typical nike today tread goes usually before they fall apart completely I'm learning that some of the more obscure non hype Nike's that are around 50 to 80 uk pounds are usually much better quality than a 150 am90 that always starts coming unstuck by the toe and sides. Too many made i think,, when i go for the cheaper ones they are great my current favourites nikecourt zoom pro and suade sb blazers the blazers were 51 on sale and the tennis zoom 45 half price for a very hard, hard court rubber sole the softer foam and zoom does a excellent job tbf to Nike i love the am90 so i fid wear them for four months straight

I used to have a pair of these in high school. I always wanted a pair of 875’s but being in high school at the time I didn’t have the money for those and these gave the similar vintage look with a price I couldn’t refuse. Plus they were so comfortable. I know they aren’t as durable as the boots they are copying , but just for casual wear these were perfect!

You are correct from memory. The leather quality and construction was also brilliant. I just went on my own little speech about this model. I love the Mowabb and what it stood for. Last ones that were close to that quality were the 2006 release. Still closer in look as opposed to quality of course.
I would pay a good price for a proper re-release of the 91 if it was built in the same way exactly.

Here's a fun fact about climbing up big peaks, wearing your heavy double mountaineering boots at the lower elevation can be a pain. Taking a well made sneaker and drilling sheet rock screws into them allows you to move quickly over the lower elevations.
Which in turn allows you to climb quickly to set up higher base camps.
Once at a certain altitude you swap out the sneakers for your boots.
I've used this method before, it's a shame nike doesn't make those any more. So now I just use a pair of guide shoes instead.

But I stress it’s not as it once was. The 91 Mowabb was something else. Leather quality to the construction and build with the neoprene sock. Amazing. Combined a hiking boot with a trainer but leaning so much more to the hiking. Also a beautiful thing to wear. Trails end

But if you actually walk or use them for any excerise /work they just break apart . They don't last long at all. And many of them are really expensive. Unless it's something like actuall leather it just does no last for me. I feel like this so bad for the environment.

I think you should check out the Nike ACG Mountain Fly Low Goretex. It's fairly new, and it says it has something interesting in the sole called a fly plate. Maybe this is similar to the performance enhancing plate that are in those nike Zoom shoes that were banned for use in competition? I own a pair and personally they're one of the most comfortable outsoles I've ever worn without being too squishy. They fit pretty snug so I had to go up half a size.

The upper never really got torn and I didn't even took care of them that much, only clean them with sneaker cleaners when they're super dirty. But of course I didn't abuse them. Put these on and my whole world changed. My feet never hurt from standing on any surface, all day long. Wore them or a derivative (track 6) I think) for 20 years. Had other shoes in that time. Nothing else worked. Yup. They got burned on RUclips for dissolving soles. Mine never did, but I wore them nearly every day. They come in low and high. I wore low. I kind of don't get roughout, suede and nubuck for hiking and workwear use. I think the one good feature of them is that they do soak up any leather care products quickly and thoroughly. But therein lies the problem - it does the same with water unless it's super treated. Whenever I go out in wet conditions in shoes like that, they soak up the water and turn quite heavy. They also take ages to dry.

I had the dark brown leather Nike Manoas but they're branded as ACG and after just few weeks leather starts to crack near soles,.I was furious at first, but after those little cracks (they didn't transform into holes luckly) I wear those shoes almost every winter for 10 years. They're water and snowproof, comfy, warm enough and all in all really durable. I throw them away last winter with much sadness and bought another pair of Manoas, but without ACG badging. They fell,..different. After one winter they're all right but idk, they don't feel like the old ones....

I had a pair of Nike ACG Manoa boots i bought in '12. They basically became my every day boots because of how comfortable they were and they held up to abuse for 9+ years.

If you could get hold of all eras of mowabbs and break them down for each version that would be amazing. You might still find a 91 version out there (at a reasonable price if you can even say that) that won’t be usable but in some condition to look at construction and leather quality wise. It may be nostalgia only but I see to remember them being so much better and lasting for years of good use

THIS! OG Mowabbs, vs early 2000s, vs the last crop of retros. Quality has spiked & cratered through the years. Even a teardown of a current Mowabb would be pretty awesome as I've seen no one do these and I'm curious to see what's in the midsole these days, especially if they have forefoot air units. The Air Revaderchi retro vs the Mowabb retro could be a cool comparison as well as the Revaderchi's seem to be slightly better quality, but don't have as much hype around them so they can be snapped up for cheap.

The only thing Nike makes similar what I remember ACG being is there SFB line. but it's like comparing apples and oranges, they're similar, but not the same. The lower end SFB boots look to be built more like their Nike free hiking/trail running shoes, but with leather and canvas/heavy mesh for the uppers

Unrelated to this video but have you ever done something along a "how to buy" video?
I actually went to buy a pair of Nick's and once I picked a style it turned into about 10 pages of questions about options and I eventually just gave up.
Being an EEE I've kind of been stuck using sketchers as my "work boots" and wearing through a pair every 4 months or so...
A 600$ pair of boots would probably be a money saver for me...

the only nike ACG boots & shoes i would really recommend are from the late 80s to mid 90s because the leathers & suedes used during that era are leagues better than today's, plus they're able to be resoled. some came with leather fiberboards and metal shanks. calderas, magmas, harmattans, etc.

Have you looked at Golden Fox boots at all? Cheap but well regarded moc toes. Certainly not on par with Red Wings, Thorogood, White's etc. but they seem better than the Carhartt, Danners, Harley Davidsons etc. Run about 100 bucks.

Looks great. Cheap-ish, good looking, light and comfortable hiking boot.
I don't know who's looking for long wearing thread unless you wear it on asphalt - which is not where a hiking boot should live, really. The squishy foam makes sense for me.

Hey! I know you’re kind of in a boot frenzy at the moment, but you guys should check out Victory Sportswear! It’s a sneaker company that states their shoes are made in the US and are resolable! They appear to be a tiny company, and if their product is worth it, would probably enjoy some attention!!

Sadly, I don't think you'll find any products that spotlight ACG's full potential anymore. They might be out of the Darkest Ages, but cost savings and "lipstick on a pig" is the order of the day for current day Nike ACG. It's sad too, because I have an excellent v-neck base layer from Nike ACG I bought in 1999 that has weathered every winter since then, from under-a-tshirt on balmy winter days, to frigid 4 layer-necessary snowboarding trips. I look forward to winter so I can bust out that ACG base layer! But I don't see that kind of quality ever coming back, unfortunately. Might as well call them P.C.G. - Past Conditions Gear.

Can you do Corcoran field boots or the classic jump boot as part of your military boot series? the field boots or Corcoran II's as they were known at the time were my favorite daily's and through 7 years I only bought 2 pair (the first pair was still serviceable I just wanted some fresh ones). The classic jump boots were easy to mirror polish and were my friday inspection or parade boots. both seemed pretty well made and I'd like to hear your take.

Im from Oregon and a gym I trained at was frequented by many Nike families and even the CFO of Nike. Ive tried Nike's countless times for various activities including competitive fencing and their $220 Ballestra shoes. Inconsistent is an understatement as I had around 6 pairs and while some were perfectly fine others had no traction, one pair popped with every step till it let out a loud bang, another the sole of the shoe was peeling off around the their logo on the bottom. I eventually quit Nike all together between the bad customer service, the very inconsistent quality and the ridiculous price tag for said iffy quality. I switched to the Adidas D'artagnan IV's which were $80 cheaper, way more consistent and just more comfortable. For Nike running shoes those stupid rubber dots on the bottoms literally fell off in no time, the impact absorption didnt feel any better than the Nike's I has in the 90s as a kid. Meanwhile Adidas put out their Adifoam stuff that was phenomenal by comparison. They may be local but given their quality over the last two decades they dont deserve the hype. I've given their shoes way too many chances and the majority fell apart quickly or had defects. And I they show up at every athletic store in the Portland, Beaverton, Clackamas and Hilsboro region to make sure their products are always front and center.
Oh and the ones that popped with every step and eventually just burst, I handed them directly to the CFO(Something Chandlee) who supposedly took them to the lab and about a month later returned them saying "dunno, send a request to Nike support on the website". Well these were sport specific shoes and they werent available on their website, they offered me credits to buy some other crap on their site and by that point I was fed up with Nike stuff constantly falling apart on me so I just said forget it and havent bought anything Nike since. I dont care that its famous and local, I care that Im not spending a bunch of money on cheaply made, poorly designed crap which in my experience living in Oregon for 30+ years and having owned plenty, can honestly say seems to be most of their products, overpriced and prone to falling apart.
Also if you ever visit the company grounds they are super pretentious, the father of one of the kids I tutored was hired for construction on the grounds and they showed up in their work shoes only to have some nike supervisor call in a pickup to bring in a bunch of Nike shoes and told them to "I better not see you here wearing anything but Nike". It was snobby and apparently not uncommon. All the more reason for me not to like them.

This boot looks like it has a blown rubber outsole like many Nike waffle soles. This produces soft and light soles but not the hardest wearing.
The Nike waffle soles are really good for grip on many surfaces and the soft outsole allows them to grip surprisingly well on ice and smooth rock which makes them quite versatile even if the shoe or boot they are attached to are not really designed for the rough stuff.
