      I am enrolled in the PGE C.A.R.E program that Discounts my Service and when my Energy use is LOW , they often issue me Energy Credits , sometimes my Entire Bill is $0 and the Next Month is like $10 .
      I am also Enrolled in EBCP which is a ZERO Emissions Local Power Company , which Currently 100% of power generated is from Renewable sources , but PGE still charges me for Transmission.
      EBCP also provides 50% Renewable and 25% Renewable options as well.
      one other FACTOR in California is PGE has Tesla MEGAPACKS at Moss Landing and Ventura County which should help to Balance the Loads better with All the RENEWABLES California has , it still needs to build more MEGAPACK storage in CA , however.

      Ricky PLEASE look into researching and possibly getting a "Vertical Geothermal System" good example is Dandelion Energy but there are many... Got a friend the has it here and it cuts the cost of Heating, Cooling and Continuous Warmed hot water (Reduced energy used by 41%).. What we really need is a Green Ecosystem of products From BEVs and Solar to Wind (Harmony VAWT), geothermal, HVAC, Passive housing, Shading and Batteries!!! ~ What we then would need is a smart grid as we will then have Community Renewable Farms!

    • @JBoy340a
      @JBoy340a 4 года назад

      Depends on your usage and weather but I would say you are likely correct. If you have solar and the sun comes out every day the Powerwall(s) will likely reach capacity. With 1 power wall that is 13 kWh and a limit of drawing 5 kW continuous. During the summer it is likely most of your electrical needs during the day could be met by the solar. So for 10+ hours a day, you may not need any power from the grid or the Powerwall. Also, if you size your solar right you will also have enough excess power to charge powerwall(s) to 100%. But with only 1 powerwall you have the 5 kW draw limit. So things like A/C and ovens may be only partially covered when the grid is up, and unavailable when the grid is down.
      This limitation is one reason we went with 2 powerwalls. In the summer we can fill them by noon, get credit for sending power back to the grid until 7 pm, and still power the A/C and ovens into the night. For us, solar and powerwalls have dropped out summer power bills by 90%.

      This might be one of the times for a HOA to use its power for good. If there are 160 individual houses that choose to get Tesla Powerwalls, then the $8500 price per PowerWall means the whole setup will cost $1.36M. But if enough people vote and there is a sufficient flat area, and the power grid can connect to every house, then purchasing a single MegaPack would be worth it. A MegaPack would cost the same as ~120 Powerwalls, but its power storage is ~200 times as much.
      The key is figuring a way to do this with permission and help from the Electric company, since it would likely need to be between the substation and the house meters. A second function might be linking the MegaPack to a computer so that whenever the MegaPack is providing power it sends a message to the computer, which then sends an alert to the HOA customers (the computer just maintains a mailing/messaging list, so the MegaPack doesn't need to). So if a power outage occurs all the Megapack HOA users get notified, so they can turn down their power usage. Similarly when the Megapcak is storing/discharging, a similar app to the current Tesla Powerwall app will let them see how the MegaPack is being used

    @12:42 CT stands for "current transformer", it is way to measure the current going through a conductor/wire, and if you find the current this way and you know what is the voltage (120 or 240 v) then you can calculate the power and energy being consumed by that circuit/room/appliance.

    Awesome video Ricky, thank you for sharing your experience. Wondering what Tesla does to mitigate thermal runaway events? Although relatively newer in the maritime world our regulatory bodies make us do all kinds of intricate things to mitigate runaways and internal / external events that would leak to a fire. I'm sure Tesla has some pretty slick hardware for limiting to a event in a single cell of a sub pack but curious to know more.

      @@TwoBitDaVinci thanks! Systems we use have a BMS that monitors temp and charging faults but must be independently powered with 24VDC not the rack HV DC 24/7, which in case of power loss must mean a backup battery bank. This way the BMS is always monitoring even if you're not using it. There was a corvus fire in recent years because they shutoff the entire system but didn't disconnect the bank and a thermal runaway led to a fire. One of those scenarios people don't think about until you go through the exercise.

      BrianCNC - every Tesla Powerwall has a BMS - battery management system , similar to what their cars all have and TESLA Powerpacks - commerical and Megapacks - GRID storage.
      the BMS heats/cools the battery to keep it in Optimal conditions.
      but IF you live in a HOT/COLD City then you should consider mounting Inside the Garage.

    @Two Bit da Vinci - Excellent review of your setup walking through each component while also factoring in your power company. It's very close to the ideal setup I would implement but I'd also want my future EV to be charged overnight from battery storage system. In addition, as you mentioned to also include the ability to charge the battery storage system during the non-solar hours from the grid especially during the overnight hours when the (variable or time of use) electric rates are the cheapest.
    A possible idea for a future video is comparing or at least reporting on the various battery storage systems available today and highlight some of the features / capabilities they provide. (E.g. really like the idea of it monitoring the weather forecast to predict possible outages and place a priority of charging the battery storage to 100%. Is that a common feature with other battery storage systems?) That would be very helpful for those that do not have access or funds to purchase a Tesla Powerwall or the time to wait for it to be installed.

    Food for thought...
    Just researching and ran into this other product being promoted. Summed up for you:
    Compared to the Tesla Powerwall, the PowerBloc system has a few key advantages:
    Larger battery capacity - The PowerBloc can store a full day's worth of energy, more than the 13.5 kWh capacity of a Powerwall. This provides greater energy independence.
    DC-coupled solar - The Step microconverters connect the solar panels directly to the battery at 400V DC, avoiding conversion losses compared to AC-coupled systems like the Powerwall.
    Grid-forming inverter - The PowerBloc can power the whole home independently off-grid, unlike the Powerwall which requires grid connection or a backup gateway to power a whole home.
    Generator integration - The PowerBloc manages seamless blending and switching between solar, battery, generator, and grid unlike Powerwall's limited generator support.
    Modular scalability - The PowerBloc battery and solar capacity can be easily expanded as needs change, vs the Powerwall's fixed capacity.
    Advanced energy management - The PowerBloc uses solar forecasting and intelligence to optimize self-consumption, while Powerwall has basic solar self-consumption.
    So in summary, the PowerBloc provides greater energy independence, efficiency, flexibility and intelligence compared to the Powerwall's more limited off-grid capabilities. But Powerwall is a simpler plug-and-play solution for grid-connected solar storage.

At 12:50 you were talking about Tesla monitoring the Critical Panel rather than the whole house panel by mistake. They fixed this. We have 2 PW in AZ. While it was advertised as a 6 day backup with some caveats, it might give us two days from 100%, in the winter months. We use the "self powered" option and since install have only used a very minimal amount of grid energy. There were two days that were cloudy and the batteries did not make it beyond 3am. While we think that's great, we're not sure how it will affect our batteries in the long haul discharging and recharging so often. Using the settings you use for time of use export, the system pulls from the grid about half of the day which isn't what we want, even if we have to buy new batteries sooner. It's all new to us but fun fun fun. :-)

    Good video, glad to hear you had a good experience. We've had our Powerwall 2 for almost 2 years and it's fabulous technology.
    You might like to explain that your experience and the explanation of your setup, e.g. the service panel is USA based. It differs greatly from country to country. I'm UK based and our setup is very different. The wiring, consumer unit (service panel), electricity tariffs and what we can and can't do. e.g. we can charge the battery during off-peak from the grid if very different in many ways. Our installations are almost always installed, commissioned and working within a single day. Same with solar installations over here. There's no waiting for the sign-off, certification or anything like that. The approval is done upfront before any workmen put boots on the ground. Differing approaches, different infrastructure and components makes the user experience of the product from installation through to daily use so distinctive.

      the AC is not backed up... if the grid is online and i have power, the powerwall can actually support the entire load and will run my house from 4-9PM, so my usage from grid would be 0. but its not in the backup panel, so if the grid goes down, it wont run. weird, but the reasonging is that such a huge load is too close to the max output for the powerwall so they dont want you to just blow its entire capacity in like 2 hours if there was a real emergency.

    • @TwoBitDaVinci
      @TwoBitDaVinci  4 года назад

      the powerwall can put out 5000w. So 4-9pm when energy is very expensive, it'll check what the house is using, and supply up to 5000 watts. if my whole house and AC together was pulling 6000w (6kW), then my powerwall could supply 5kw and my pull from the grid would only be 1kw. that's a huge savings during peak times.
      but if there's no grid, then those loads aren't in my critical loads panel, so they're not powered when grid is off. hope that helps!

      Solar with powerwalls is basically like a gas generator integrated with your home. If your power goes out with solar and powerwalls you will go into backup mode with your system. In other words you are now off grid and you still have electricity in your home, it is now being supplied by your solar panels and powerwall. You have a microgrid! Once your local utility comes back on line with in 5 minutes your tesla gateway will switch back over to utility.

    Nice video and I've been wanting a Powerwall for a while but the economics where I live and my current system makes the decision a tough call. I got solar thru Solar City under a PPA so without me owning the solar system, I'm not allowed to make changes to it. Now that Tesla is the owner of what used to be Solar City, I might be able to negotiate a new contract and roll the cost of my current system into a deal that will add a Powerwall but when I called to ask that question, it wasn't a known subject and they were leaning toward me buying my system first after my 5 year anniversary per the PPA contract then order the Powerwall. Since I'm under a TOU plan in northern NV and the power is cheap here compared to where you are and our outages are less frequent, it makes the decision seem harder to justify. I still want one anyway since I charge our Model 3 and Leaf since getting the PV system so I'm sure it would help but the time to see any ROI would probably be beyond my life expectancy.

    I am also in San Diego County. It is interesting that you opted for both ToU and Solar and Battery. Based in your own advice, that means that SDGE must offer a crappy Net Metering plan.
    I've had advice to the contrary. That with ToU Plan #5, and solar (EV-TOU-5), getting the battery isn't worth the expense. Plan #5 will pretty much zero out my electrical expense over 12 months when SDGE credits me back for the solar I sell them.
    Thoughts?

    • @TwoBitDaVinci
      @TwoBitDaVinci  4 года назад

      TOU5 you can definitely do great without a powerwall. I still have time of use so rates are 2x between 4-9pm. So if i store excess solar instead of giving it back, and use it later, that's like getting 2x for it. Is it worth the money, that's up to you. But yeah for your and your setup, you're totally fine without one. I will say we have wildfires and power outages are far too frequent... IMO so battery backup for me, is invaluable.
