How to Make Sounds with the Sample Editor - Getting Started with Chiptunes & MilkyTracker (2/4)

- By the end of this tutorial you should be able to:
Generate sounds using the sample editor
Adjust a sample’s volume
Apply fades to samples
Loop samples
Input notes using the keyboard
When creating a sample that’s being used for melody or harmony, I recommend it being 64 samples long, or a multiple of 64. Otherwise, the sample won’t be in tune. It’s possible to tune samples in MilkyTracker, but that’s best left for an intermediate tutorial!
As I mention, there are advantages and disadvantages to creating volume fades in the sample. The biggest disadvantage is that sample playback speed is determined by the note. Higher notes = faster sample playback, lower notes = slower sample playback. This means the length of your notes will be directly related to its pitch.
To solve this problem, we’re going to look at the instrument editor in the next tutorial
Hotkeys used (check manual for PC hotkeys!)
ESC: Stop playback
Space: Trigger record mode
Enter: Playback
F1-F7: changes note-input rage
Command+Option+S: sample editor
Z: input note ‘C’
Q: input note ‘C’ + one octave

That's gonna be a LOONG journey
You helped me so much!! I've been looking for hours how to create a note sustain.
eeyyyyy glad I could help!
This is so awesome! I can't wait for a new vid.
Thanks! Next vid will be out next week.
These videos have been a great intro to the way MilkyTracker works.
Thank you, glad they're useful :)
Thank you so much. This is exactly what I was looking for! I used to use ScreamTracker3 and Impulse Tracker back in the day and wanted to get back into making music again on a modern Mac. This tutorial is helping me get started.
Excellent! MilkyTracker is so much fun once you get into the flow
bro this was like, my entire lifelihood when i was 12
Thank you, This playlist and your tutorials are helping me with MilkywayTracker.
Glad you hear. You're very welcome! :)
fantastic video. had milky tracker sitting on my laptop for a while now, but could never figure out how to use it.
It’s intimidating at first, but once you get into the flow, it’s so much fun!
Amazing tutorial, very nice and detailed! My problem is that my MacBook keyboard doesn’t behave like you describe - F1 F6 et +note doesn’t play, it changes screen brightness, sound volume etc.
Yeah, using a MacBook, laptop keyboard might prevent you from using some hotkeys. I have a full sized keyboard with an 'fn' key that helps, otherwise, F1, F2 etc. would change screen brightness. Not sure there's an elegant solution around that... except maybe remapping your keyboard? I occasionally use Karabiner Elements to help with remapping.
Tried following along on my Chromebook. The only thing I am confused about is the notes you are putting down. While everyone says "DONT USE MOUSE!" I pretty much HAVE to. And because I am on a Chromebook it means I have to use on the mobile version. :(
You can use the mouse! Sometimes I use the mouse. It depends what I'm doing. But sometimes I use the mouse by default, and there are keyboard hotkeys that will do something faster. Alot of composing is about having tight feedback loops, so you can listen/edit quickly. If you have access to keyboard hotkeys that will do something faster than the mouse, then you should practice using the hotkeys. If you don't have access, then you should practice getting faster at whatever tools/hotkeys you DO have access to, including the mouse.
What interpolation do you recommend? I found that turning the interpolation off gives the triangle richer bass, but everything is more prone to aliasing.
I'm always on Linear interpolation, but I haven't played around with them much (yet!)
idk whats wrong, i did follow all the parameters in 7:03 but i got a different waveform. maybe im high af
Like, it sounds different? Or there's no option to select "square"?
@@Gruber_Music I think I had the same issue. It does not sound very etheral, more like a tesla coil. Could it be that "square" wave is actually a sine wave?
I did another sine wave and it sounded a bit similar to what you had.
@@Fizbun Not sure exactly what would be causing the different sounds. Maybe we have different resampling modes selected (Config --> I/O)
Dear Gruber, can you help? I'm pressing the keyboard but no sound plays. I can still manualy play the sound pressing the WAV button but that's the only way.
Hey, were you able to figure this out? Hard to know exactly what the problem is, so I can only recommend clicking through all the menus. Especially Config-->I/O. Also make sure you're in "record" mode when you're inputting so the input bar is red.
@@Gruber_Music yeah sometimes you need to click on the track editor on the place you put in the note, that helps.
@@GinoZump Use "spacebar" to go into, and out of, record mode. The sound will only play if you're in the part of the column where you can input notes. If the cursor is anywhere else, there'll be no sound.
Why does it always skip 2 spaces whenever I place a note?
Probably because Add = 02. Look for it under BPM and Spd. Change it to 01 if you only want to add one row when you place a note. Or 00 if you don't want it to move at all. Very handy tool depending on what kinds of instruments you're adding to the composition.
I keep on having a problem where notes will continue looping after playing
Do you have some kind of loop activated? Looping is available in the sample editor (Forward & Ping-pong) and the instrument editor (checkbox beside the envelope graph).
@@Gruber_Music I don't know why I didn't think of this, thanks!
Welcome!
I can't seem to right click on OS X, have tried everything - cntl, option, fn, shift... any ideas?
Hm. That's strange. I just tried it out and it works fine for me. What version are you running?
@@Gruber_Music Thanks for your reply. I got it to work! CTRL clicking doesn't work for some reason but if I press and hold with pressure on the trackpad, that does work. Smooth sailing now. Thanks again.
@@sebastianbotzow Ahh good!
NOTE:
PC does not mean Windows.
PC does not indicate an OS.
It simply means Personal Computer.
Got it. Thank you!
is this possible in fasttracker II?
I'm not familiar with Fasttracker II. So I don't know, sorry!
define bad time
Your samples will be out of tune. You will have to re-tune all of your samples so that A4 = 440Hz (for example). This is possible in MilkyTracker but if you're just getting started with it, I reccommend just keeping all your samples a multiple of 64, and you won't have to worry about it until you are more familiar with the program. Make sense?
Looks easy. Now get a musical talent yet. :D
