Im just using the demo version rn and thinking about getting the full license! Would love to see more videos but seeing as this is the first vid Ive watched (and a bloody good one at that) im sure you have more on your channel that im gonna dig through!!
Really appreciate the lesson you've provided - I bought this program 14 years ago and immediately quit out of confusion! have recently given it another go and your video has been so helpful
One of the best tutorials I have seen so far. Right to the point and explained well. I have watched LOADS of tutorials on Renoise before finding this and none made it more clear and simple (especially the S command when sampling). Thanks for the information!
8:48 "How the hell would you do that in another program" > especially that fast!! Great Introduction for me as an former Octatrack user. So, fixed for a step based workflow :-)
Thanks for this tutorial. After using Renoise for something like 10 years on and off it's nice to go back and get schooled on some basics I haven't used much. I'm looking to get back into more sample work and less VST work.
This is such a great video. I've learned more about producing interesting music in 20 minutes here than most of the dozens of hours udemy courses for other DAWs.
Good intro. If I wasn't already a week into screwing around quite a bit inside of Renoise, I may have been rather lost! What I got most out of this video were the Note Adds/Sub and the FX Adds/Sub. That makes much more sense in the Edit Menu. And also getting a better idea of how to trigger parts of the loop with the Sxx FX commands. I can see why Glitch and IDM and Breakcore love Renoise so much.
Ah thats so great to hear! I just uploaded a Q+A session with Renoise which you might find has some extra tricks in it. Thanks for your comments, it means a lot!
Very helpful thanks. Surprising how many tips I picked up despite a few years of use. Look forward to more, especially advice on how to achieve pro quality output.
wicked tutorial. I started tracking back in the Amiga days and did it up until about 15 years ago, when I went fully to FL Studio. Recently decided to go back to tracking and have been messing with Renoise, MilkyTracker, etc. Pretty sure I'm going to stick with Renoise so this video is super helpful to get quickly up to speed. Thanks so much!
At 2:48 the video talks about using the Beatsync T buttton to sync things. The video show the Finetune value changing to 120, whereas mine changes to 47. I don’t know how important this is but I’m keen to find out why this difference is occurring! That said, the rest of the video is brilliant, and the way that such a simple change at 10:10 gives such a glorious sound is truly mind-blowing 😍
The beatsync is changing the pitch of the sample to fit the tempo of the track - it will change depending on the length of the sample youre using and the tempo of the track. Glad to know it helped! Perhaps one day part 3 will materialise !
Absolutely brilliant video!!! Thank you very much and love your style of presentation, no messing, get on with it but at a pace I could take it in! Will be upgrading Renoise from demo to full as only just come across trackers! 🤷♂️ Also getting a Polyend Tracker +, once sold some other stuff. Trackers appear to be more logical and visual to me. Anyways, thank you for the video, I have liked and subscribed so interested in any future stuff relating to Renoise and maybe trackers in general. Retired now so time to play and learn. Cheers
Thanks! Looking at picking up Redux to use in Bitwig. Since there are only a couple of videos on it, it's easier to search for Renoise. Really wanting to get into chopping breaks and this looks quick and fun. I love old school jungle/dnb breaks so this might be the perfect fit for me. I really don't like programming drums on a piano roll at all. I know I should focus more on it because I'm really weak at that but honestly I'm more interested in synth sound design. Or maybe I should get Renoise build drum and simple melody and load wav into Bitwig and go from there.... I guess I'll be buying both Redux and Renoise. haha.
That's really interesting to watch, thanks a lot! The Polyend Tracker was and is my first experience with trackers. Although I absolutely love it, it's fascinating to see how Renoise eliminates a huge amount of limitations there are on the PE Tracker. Like free choice of the number of tracks (as opposed to a maximum of 8 on the PE Tracker), number of FX columns (maximum of 2 on the Tracker) etc. It's also kind of inspiring to find workarounds on the PE Tracker to overcome its limitations, like condensing multiple tracks into a single track by converting them to a sample for instance. And at the end, you might not even miss a feature when you haven't seen it somewhere else (so I should probably stop watching Renoise tutorials :D ). Anyways, very interesting to see!
Hope you do more of these, just got renoise, think its ace. Maybe the forthcoming Polyend hardware tracker will get more people interested in trackers - Thats what happened with me
@@midierror Hard to say when Im starting out myself, Im going through a new found interest in brain dance , so that is what has found me looking at renoise. So anything to do with glitchy edits drums and synths, lfos, probabilities and similar such things - cheers😁
That's exactly what happened with me as well! I never even considered that trackers exist at all, if the Tracker had not randomly popped up while more or less randomly browsing an music gear shop's website...
New Renoise user here. Thanks for doing this. It was very helpful in learning how the app works and what it's capable of. Any plans to release more Renoise tutorials?
Three things. First - why in left side of screen, there is small sample window? For what? Second - is it possible to have a grid lines in sample window, like we have it in Keyzones section? Third - (06:27) I have two patterns - 0. 1., with some notes. How to create empty pattern above 0. pattern?
Very creative, put the note at the center of the DAW rather than the track. A note can play any instrument is simply brilliant. So hard to do in any other DAW.
You are a great teacher midierror! I am about to pull the plug and buy Renoise, it's a very fun DAW to work with. I got a question, maybe you can help out. Lets say you make a reversed cymbal and you want it to snap into the next pattern. Is there any way I can achieve this without resorting to eyeballing where I put the cymbal in the pattern, so it can drop exactly on a beat?
Yeah, it's super easy. When you're editing the reverse cymbal in the sample editor, reverse the sample so it's playing forward, set the snap to beats, select however many beats you want (presumably some multiple of four that gets you close to the end of the cymbal tail), and chop it using command T (on mac at least). Then reverse it back, do a little fade in if you need to, and drop it on your track, knowing now exactly how many beats long the sample is.
question - are the S effect and the slice feature in the sampler essentially two different ways of accomplishing the same thing? if i prefer to use the slicer with drum samples can i just use that instead?
question.. I'm inputing "S010" in the fx trigger just the same as you are and it says "S010" where it should but it's still triggering back at the start of the sample, and I AM in record mode. Any thoughts as to why? It's also not blue for whatever that's worth. just got Renoise yesterday so I'm early on in the learning curve. Thanks!
@@midierror I tried using it to make a few tracks. I do really like the tracker interface, but then certain features (or lack thereof) made me wish I was using ableton. I was struggling a bit with automation. As an ableton user, I found it frustrating that I couldn't automate any parameter on the sampler that I wanted. Now I'm back to using ableton. I might look into redux.
Use a whole hexadecimal based numerical entry DAW for what Geist 2 can do in any DAW??? Sorry, but this looks like a DAW created by a mathematician/programmer geek.
Heh, I guess it's meant for people who were used to trackers beforehand, or just find the tracker workflow easier overall. I felt blessed when I found Renoise for the first time, since I finally could make professional music productions with the interface I was used to the most (I started out with Famitracker).
I don't understand how anyone is able to follow this. You don't explain really anything you're doing. For example when putting the backwards effect on line 28 at about 5:10ish. How is that getting in there? I'm hitting B and it's saying unknown effect and putting in a B000.
I dot know shit about recording and every-time I see a video about beginner tutorials, they make the video as as if everyone has a masters degree in this. Doesn't do me any good at all.
Please comment below if you want me to make more Renoise tutorials - what would you like to see covered?
Thanks for the video! Please make some on how to do a Post-Punk ... Synth-Pop type of beats and sounds, cheers thanks!

How come when I real time record, it opens up a new note column?
How are you doing that drag and copy?

my pleasure - been meaning to do this for a while
I think it's fitting that the actual sequencer screen looks like something that could be displayed on one of those old Atari computers.
Also I read a comment somewhere that said this was sort of like using Excel to make music and I found that both funny and.............intriguing.
How do you insert "10" in "S10"? I only manage to insert "S00" but I dont know hoow to add the 10... thanks in advance
