No sound playing during recording is most definitely a feature. If it wasn't muted, it'd be constantly cracking or stuttering for sake of synchronization with the game code
I've actually made movies using Godot 3.4 and below . In fact, if anybody is interested, I made a short pixel art movie called: 7 o clock pm (Henry's Pixel Art Movies). It's on my channel. I made the movie using Godot and GD Script coding.
@@PaoloMunoz Yes, I probably need to get a Github page going because yes, I surely do have a bunch of scripts that I think that people could use; especially when it comes to animations, godot and various engines etc. I thus, generate a bunch of scripts that I should be sharing. When I finish my github page, I'll probably make a video on my page talking about the github page and some of the codes that I post on github when I get around to it.
I was thinking about making a plugin for something like that. I really want to go deeper into the plugin system. I wonder if someone else has done something like that.
I don't think they would do this. The idea behind the small footprint is to only include, what is necessary to create a game. Else it would get to that point of other tools which would love to be everything but are not good at anything specific. But I would love, that they improve the tools to reload assets. Or something like a "hot-reload" mode for creating assets, which in that mode get automatically detected and updated.
Very nice. I used to use Godot to render video overlays for a friend now and then. This makes the whole process way easier. Now I just have to find out if there's a way to encode transpaceny and/or maybe patch in that as a feature. :)
What a Nice feature! As someone with a slow computer I can never record footage of the stuff I work and have to rely on other people, I'm surprised this isn't a feature all engines have. How does it handle recording at 4k when you screen isn't? Does it record at the test play window resolution or the resolution you set your project to?
Awesome!! I use Godot for my videos and I had to use OBS to record. Did notice some framerate drops and lower quality with using OBS. I am excited for this!
This is something I'd previously made my own intermediary Tool script in Godot to achive, I wanted to render out a complex animation as a .png sequence with transparency to use in a video later... but heck was it hacky. This comes as a pleasant (and no doubt more reliable) surprise! xD
Shame this feature is limited do 4.0, I've made a few 2D animations in Godot so I don't set a foot on any adobe software. Had to record with obs and sync audio with v. editing software. Any shutter, freeze, etc. messes up the frames and makes you rerecord. Can't be 100% sure but I'd guess AnimatedSprite would get missing frames and offsetted timestamps just because of the nature of converting framerates.
Wouldn't worry too much. I wrote an AVI writer myself in the past (for a university project) and it's really quite straight forward. And this is definitely a nice addition for people to record gameplay right away. It's not some tacked on feature with huge complexity (in fact you do little more than just writing/sending screenshot after screenshot to that AVI file).
So is their a plan to make this a node. So that we can put it into our games. So the game players can use it to make videos of their game play in our games.
If you are worried about this being on the end game, worry not. It is only on tool builds (which means the editor). On the flip side, I might be interested in having a game be able to record video of itself… But yes, that is not for every game, so I'd agree that should be a plugin.
The big thing is it renders frame rate perfect. So for example, lets say your game ran at 20 fps MAX on your PC. Since this doesn't render real time, you can set it to 60FPS and even with an incredibly potato PC, it will render at 60FPS. This means if you are using Godot for movie making, you can crank up the effects to the maximum, the resolution to the maximum and still render it at a 60FPS video.
This does not really compete with OBS. It is not recording the screen. It can't record something other than the game. And OBS can't produce arbitrary footage. This makes it easy for game developers to take footage of the game (e.g. for game trailers), with one less software to use, and without any performance considerations. With an screen recorder you may get repeat frames. That can't happen with this. Furthermore, we can crank up the quality beyond what the machine can render in real time and still get smooth footage. This also means Godot can be used for creating video. You can create animations in the engine and render them to video. No, I don't think it will compete with Unreal on video production or anything like that. But I'm aware of people who use Unity to render 3D scenes made with blender, because it is faster than blender, even if the result is not of the same quality. I'm sure they will appreciate this as Godot even more lightweight than Unity. Perhaps these are not concerns to you because of you got very good hardware? There is people with talent and not enough money.
@@VerMishelb it's not that I like it or not. it's that it's a format that has been abandoned in the 90's. (also, avi is a container and wmv a video codec)
I wish the godot devs would stop shoving useless features into godot 4. I mean, who really needs this?? Now? Should have been pushed off to a later release.
@@SianaGearz That may be. But it still takes time to evaluate these sorts of things. Sometimes a lot longer than you'd think. I question the timing and prioritazation more than the feature itself.
@@JasonLothamer I don't know, you seem to think getting G4 out ASAP is a priority but it might just as well be a playground which is gradually shaping up into something releasable. Sure it's got a plan behind it what they actually want in it but there has to be some flexibility to the process as well for sure, actual core changes can have unforeseen consequences.

Yeah Unity's recrorder does the same thing. Definitely by design

Nice. I would've loved if they also add a basic Sprite editor in the engine as well. Micro studio is pretty dope in that department

You can use Pixelorama and a godot_pixelorama_importer plugin to be able to import project files directly as sprites or/and animations.

Great for making game trailers then!

Awesome, no need for OBS to make trailers anymore.
This is a very welcome feature for me!
I have been using Blender to make my video loops and was toying with the idea of doing them in a game engine. This is very exciting.
Godot movie mode is really superb...it works even on a low end device...fast and easy to use....

I can see this working tremendously for rendering Archviz walk through animations quickly.
Great. Another case for Godot vs Unity. In Unity, recording just does not work on Linux machines. So glad I decided to change engines

This will be great for trailers! 4K 60fps even if you can't run that at decent framerates
Nice, just like Construct 3, very interesting
Now the question is if this is better for creating a trailer for your game/software to put on the store than using another software like OBS.
thanks, i love this engine
this will be the unity killer engine with the strongest candidate
im afraid of godot becoming all in one solution for everything but not the 3d games
