You CAN'T do that with a Coleman Lantern

  • I hate how people love to tell you all the things you can't do. In this video I explore the idea that you can't put a Coleman #21 mantle on a 237 lantern. The results here are also valid for Peerless 2C HG or any other mantle in this size class.
    Probably the best way to deal with people who tell you silly things is to just ignore them but I'm not good at that.

    so i’m new to fuel lanterns, and purchased 3 recently second hand. the coleman dual fuel is brand new and i have no issues with it. the mantles it has in it are decently bright. however the 220K, and 228F195 i have ive had a couple issues. granted they’re older, still haven’t figured it out. the 220K works but has a flicker to it. there’s no visible flame outside of the mantles. the 228 has a ton of over burn, especially on one mantle. i did use #21 mantles because that’s what’s available and i’m new to it. any suggestions? the 220 is the one i definitely want to use with the dual fuel. i have already seen holes after just putting the mantles in so like you said i guess they’re not the greatest

    • @LanternLabs
      @LanternLabs  3 года назад +1

      Overburn is almost always "stuff" in the air tubes. You could swap the generator between the 220K and the 228, they use the same one. If the problem stays with the 228 you need to clean the air tube.
      Flickering or pulsing on a 220/228 is pretty common, sometimes a new generator cures it, sometimes a bunch of use cures it, sometimes nothing cures it...

    That was great! Thanks so much. I have a question, for best results, (assuming I can not get old Coleman mantels) what is the best mantel for a 200A and what is best for a 220F? Thanks!

    • @LanternLabs
      @LanternLabs  2 года назад +1

      200A will work fine with a #21 or a #99 (or equivalent). I like the smaller mantle better, I think the big one looks goofy. 220 lanterns want a #21 or equivalent.

  • @Subgunman
    @Subgunman 4 года назад

    Where can I obtain some of the other mantles? Have loads of 21's but would like to find something brighter than the 21's. ever since they stopped using thorium to dope the mantles the are just lacking in brightness.
    Is there also a chart that lists size or part numbers of mantels and their equivalent lumens or watts?

    • @LanternLabs
      @LanternLabs  4 года назад

      I thought that #99 and #11 were still available new OldColemanParts doesn't seem to have any #99 but they do have #11. eBay is a good source for mantles and OldColemanParts does have #24 Peerless which are roughly equivalent to #99 and #111 Peerless which is equivalent to #11 Coleman.
      Watts is a lousy reference, its not even good for electric lights, lumens is great but AFAIK there aren't any references for lanterns. Lanterns are usually rated in candlepower which is really rough and just indicates more or less light.

    Hi, I have got an Aladdin mantle lantern. It runs on kero. it consistently ruins the mantle. It will immediately turn black and be almost unusable. Aladdin sends me replacement stuff on request, which I think is good, but it does not fix my problem. Any insight on the
    Aladdin Mantle Lanterns? Thanks

    • @LanternLabs
      @LanternLabs  6 лет назад +1

      I do have a few Aladdin lamps. If you're getting carbon on the mantle the wick is too high. I think they overstate how bright the lamp will ever be, I've never gotten one above about 40% brightness. Sometimes you have to turn them down after they warm up all the way, the fire gets higher and gets sooty like that.

    • @LanternLabs
      @LanternLabs  6 лет назад

      Nope, little table lamp.

    • @TheRunAndGun10
      @TheRunAndGun10 6 лет назад

      Lantern Lab I concur with Curt’s assessment. I have several Aladdin’s and they all burn differently, and the difference is exacerbated by the shade I have installed on them. The different shades direct heat down on the fount in varying degrees. As the fuel in the fount heats up it atomizes more efficiently and will cause a rich burn/carboned mantle.
      Solution: Light the lamp to 1/3 to no more than 1/2 brightens and let burn for 30 minutes. In 30 minutes you will most likely find that the lamp is burning at peak brightness, or just needs a touch of adjustment to get there.

      Hold it closer to your computer I can't see good. ;)
      The pics I find online suggest it wants a double tie mantle. Coleman #51s might work but might be too small. #95 might work but might be too big. If you don't mind the lighting thing not working you could just hang a #21 in there...

    Very informative... Can I ask you though based on this video though, your opinion on using a #111 mantle on a coleman 200 lantern, simply because the mantle is bigger and will therefore give off more light, than the #21 mantle I have been using? The coleman 200 lantern as you know has only 1 mantle while most others have 2. I want more light on my Coleman 200 lantern. ANYBODY!

    • @LanternLabs
      @LanternLabs  Год назад +1

      The larger mantle for a model 200 (or 201/202/242 etc) would be a #99 which is bigger than a #21 but smaller than a #11 or #111. It gives more light but not twice as much. Really if you want more light the answer is more lanterns. In fact the answer is always more lanterns... ;)
