      Hey Ste always a pleasure my good buddy. There is actually a version of this lantern from Canada m8 it's a CP version. Apparently it was used in the Canadian railway? It commands a high price. Lovely. Well worth picking a couple up m8. Take it easy.

    Hi Ste, just discovered your channel and really like your content.
    I collect these lanterns myself for some years now. I was happy to find my birthday lantern, a model 200a from 11/80.
    Few tips from me, the older ones didn’t had adjustable valves that’s the reason why you find it hard to adjust. They are designed to run on full blast only. Just the pressure in the tank gives you a bit of adjustment of the amount of brightness.
    I use for the white gas lanterns the Aspen 4T fuel which is available in 5l containers. But it must be the 4T! There is also 2T available but that contains oil cause it is for 2stroke engines. It burns much cleaner than normal fuel and is cheaper than the original Coleman fuel.
    Have a look for the tiny models 222a or b, 226 or 229. They’re a lot smaller than the standart size lanterns.
    Only downside for bringing it to the woods is the fragile mantle that’s why I prefer the Feuerhand lanterns for bushcraft.
    All the best and take care!

      Hey there buddy thanks for dropping in and taking the time to leave this awesome comment! I'm happy now I know the 639 has no adjustment, I thought I may have to strip it 😆 I like the sound of the smaller models I will keep an eye out for them. I do like the fuerhand lanterns too I have I think 3 to date. Unfortunately my newest one leaks everywhere! I picked up a tub paraffin and it seems to be running fine so fingers crossed. Thanks again for stopping by. Take it easy.

      @@BushcraftWithSteOutdoors The Feuerhand aren’t completely sealed. That’s how they are designed. I have a small canister from the Swedish army to bring the fuel for it to the woods and fill it into the lantern when I arrive. If there is some leftover I fill it back to the canister the next day. No leaking this way.
      Cheers mate.

    really nice kit i was issued a coleman stove way back in the late 80s ran it on petrol they could beat anything else on the market in those days [ pre jetboil ] you are right about the mantles they are very delicate but cant be beat for home emergency use giving both light and warmth dad used one in the sheds when i was a kid and a parafin heater on the stair landing the smell always reminds me of my child hood

      yep the presurised petrol stove ,,,[ no4 cookset i think could be wrong not a chef } was a staple in the british army for many years right up until we adopted the single fuel system and all equipment and vehicles had to go diesel whilst not always issued to individuals as they got hexi they were used for expeditions as they were less prone to freezing than the gas alternatives @@BushcraftWithSteOutdoors

    Congratulations on your new obsession brother, coming from a coleman collecting Yank with my own obsession. You've done a good job educating yourself as a newbie and you are spot on. I was speaking with one of my pals in Scotland yesterday about Coleman stoves and lanterns and seemed to be really curious. I think he's been bitten by the Coleman bug! Hi Ste, glad to see you could get some Coleman lanterns. That 1973 model is very nice, would love to have one of those old lanterns, you got a great deal on that for sure! I've been using Coleman lanterns for over 40 years. My favorite is my Coleman Northstar that I got back in 2000 it has electronic ignition so no need for priming. It's been my trusty companion on all my car camping trips for the last 23 years, probably my favorite piece of camping gear. I also have a Northstar propane lantern that uses liquid propane gas (the lantern screws right on to a 1 lb. fuel canister. Also have some Coleman stoves that run on white gas. I had a silver dual fuel lantern like yours before I got the Northstar.👍👍

I watched a RUclips vid where they compared 3 types of Coleman battery, white gas and propane. I think the propane was the brightest and longest lasting fuel wise. That's great to hear regarding the reliability of the lanterns 23 years is good going. I'm in the market for the dual burner petrol version over here Jeff, but silly prices put me off 😂

    Great video!
    By the way, Here's a safety directive for the older model 237 kerosene lantern. (this may also apply to the older model 639)
    When not cycling the tip cleaner, the lever should always be left in the down position. There have been instances where, during preheating, if the valve is closed AND the tip cleaner is in the up position, the generator can rupture due to expanding gasses from the heat.
    However, if the tip cleaner lever remains in the down position, expanding gas can safely vent through the tip during the preheat process.
    This issue can be circumvented by using the "soft start" method.
    Either way, the tip cleaner on these lantern models should always rest in the down position.

    • @BushcraftWithSteOutdoors
      @BushcraftWithSteOutdoors  8 месяцев назад +1

      That is fantastic information 👌 I think I may have left in the up position because I had trouble with it on the last try. Thank you very much for spending the time to write this comment, I appreciate it. Have a great week.

Really enjoying the content and just wanted to send a hello along from a fellow Ste across the pond here in Ontario Canada 🙂.
    I purchased one of the green Coleman Classic 286 single mantle naphtha lanterns back in 2021 for my car camping kit and absolutely love it!!! I was a Cub and Boy Scount in the 1980s when our campsite kitchen ran exclusively on the earlier versions of the green Coleman dual-burner naphtha stoves, and the campsite was illuminated by the Classic green coloured naphtha lanterns 😁.
    To me, there is nothing that compares to the sight, sound and smell of a Coleman liquid fuel appliance, and I plan to add a couple more of the Classic 286 lanterns to my car camping basecamp kit 👍.

      @@BushcraftWithSteOutdoors Thank you mate. Aside from our abhorrent Prime Minister who is proverbially drilling holes into the hull of our economy and the country as a whole with his Liberal party shenanigans, it is honestly a beautiful place to live and where I'm at in Ontario here (southwestern part) I am only a short drive from a few of the Great Lakes, and less than 6 hours from beautiful Algonquin Park.
      Haha it's quite funny you mention your vision of Canada because it is not uncommon for most people think this is a bushcraft heaven with lots of forests and sparse communities with snow and mountains 😆. The northern part of Ontario here is absolutely breathtaking and once you start into the Canadian Shield and up past Lake Superior, that's where this province really shines.
      The small city of Chatham that I live in has 44,000 people (we even have a Thames River 😀) is approximately one hour from the Windsor (Canada)/Detroit (Unites States) border where the Detroit River separates the two cities. On a clear summer day you can literally see each city and hear people talking from across the river and there used to be an indoor amusent park resort hotel in town here called The Wheels Inn. It was a popular American long weekend hotspot and people from Detroit would cross the border (remember, you can literally see each city across the river plain as day lol) and they would pack parkas and winter boots like as soon as they came out of the Windsor/Detroit Tunnel, it would be a barren snow-covered wasteland 🤣🤣🤣.
      And yes I absolutely agree that the sight, smell and quiet little jet engine sound of a Coleman lantern roaring away is what makes camping for me, second only to sitting in a camp chair around the fire under the night sky❤🌲⛺🌲.

      @@generationxdad I do hope to visit your beautiful country one day fella. I believe you need a license now to film in national parks and crown land!? I maybe confusing the two. I bet you Thames river is a lot cleaner than ours haha. Back in the 1800s our Thames was a literal toilet! We have very similar political problems here bud he is called Rishi Sunak. They are all the same at the end of the day. Greedy self serving selfish ##### who are so out of touch with the population they lead. Never mind when all goes tits up, we can retreat to the woods and live our best lives 😂 Top history regarding your countries history by the way.

    • @generationxdad
      @generationxdad 11 месяцев назад

      @@BushcraftWithSteOutdoors To my knowledge here in Ontario, you can film content like you what you make without a license. There are a lot of RUclips content creators who make videos just in the Algonquin Park area (Camper Christina is one, My Self Reliance/Shawn James is another). It might be different in another province here as laws and regulations can and do differ between them, but I see a ton of content coming out of northern Ontario so I think you can film freely here.
      LOL I don't know what your Thames is like over there in the UK, but if I could post a picture in here of our Thames River, it sounds like they would be roughly the same 🤣🤣. Ours actually used to be quite a bustling waterway with activity on American Long weekends where boats would be parked three abreast down at the docks in our downtown core which would be bustling with life and activity. Now our downtown is slowly but steadily drawing makeshift shelters and in the infancy stages of becoming an encampment for the homeless and mentally ill. I just turned 50 in January and to think back to when I was kid going downtown with my folks on long weekends to see all the activity and nightlife and excitement in the downtown park, to see what it is like now it's almost like a dystopian time warp.
      I listen to The Richie Allen show regularly and I hear Rishi mentioned often on the show. I don't envy what you folks are going through over there, but it seems like Trudeau has entered Canada in the race to the economic bottom over here 😵.

    • @BushcraftWithSteOutdoors
      @BushcraftWithSteOutdoors  7 месяцев назад

      Hi, unfortunately, I have no experience with the dietz lanterns, although if you buy a new Coleman dual fuel lantern and maintain it properly, they are a reliable source of heat and light.

    • @littleviking488
      @littleviking488 2 месяца назад

      Depends on how much light you want -the Coleman lanterns are between 350 and 500 candlepower (enough to light an area of about a 8 to 10 foot radius at the centre of which a book could be read easily, say up to 4-5 feet from the lantern) and the largest Dietz is about 12 candlepower (enough to read a book if it is adjacent to the lantern with the light area radius being a 3 to 4 feet)) . The Coleman's mantle contains a mineral which glows white hot in the flame of the vapourized liquid fuel. The Dietz uses a wick, the amount of light is dependent on the wick size (width) and it is un-pressurized. The storm lanterns/dietz are generally pretty safe but at the expense of light output. Used carefully, the pressurized lanterns are safe but one needs to be careful about reading and understanding the instructions -for example, (especially with gasoline powered versions), never open the fuel cap on a hot lantern, do not leave the tip cleaner in the "up" position, etc/etc. Some of the earlier Coleman lanterns (late 1950's/early 1960's) had 3 part fuel caps, some of which vented through a hole in the side of the cap. Unless the appliance was tilted so that the cap was venting only the "vapour space" of the font, releasing the pressure could result in a stream of fuel spraying across one's pants, the ground, etc. (ask me how I know this...😃) hence the "never when the appliance is hot (or near a source of ignition)" admonition. Later versions have multiple slots cut in the thread of the caps which tend to vent back towards the font but the warning remains important to heed. Kerosene/Paraffin in general is a safer fuel, even in a pressurized lantern. If you like using potentially dangerous tools in a controlled manner pressurized lanterns are excellent. It probably requires the same level of knowledge/engagement as operating a table saw.

    The red wheel on 639 is ONLY an on/off valve. The wire on the opposite side of the red wheel is only used for cleaning the generator.
    Never preheat a kerosene lamp with the needle on the up position or you will blow the generator tube!
    Start with the needle down and open the fuel valve after preheating.

    Hey, great video, thanks for posting it. Can you please tell me where you are buying your Coleman #11 mantles for this lantern? So far I can't find them online.

    One more question, do you know the model number of the pump repair kit that goes with this particular lantern? Thanks.

      @@BushcraftWithSteOutdoors I've spent a couple of hours researching online for one. The lantern model 639 is a great lantern but specific parts are not discussed online. I'm waiting on a reply from Coleman regarding the correct parts number of the pump repair kit for lantern 639. It's not listed on their site. However, I did find out that the older model lantern # 639 is now also shown as model # 3000004258 on the newer model lanterns. Maybe that info will help someone in their search for parts
