🕺🏻ABOUT DJ: DJ is a locomotive engineer for CSX Railroad since 1999. He has built dozens of layouts, gave presentations for model railroaders, is a RUclipsr, licensed drone pilot, and a great father. Хобби
Back in the 1960's I had to draw my own. We couldn't find photos to any scale. It's good to see what's old is new again
Old cereal boxes have always been my medium of choice for making scenery buildings. I also use the styrofoam foam that my packages are shipped in in as the base for landscape. While I just started with trains I was building scenery before I could afford to buy kits so this video is just up my alley.
When he showed me pics of his buildings, and they were all inspired by buildings I made, I nearly cried. One of the nicest days in my life.
Doing reruns DJ, this is such an excellent video. Really love how you tell the story of Abeg. How he models with just the scraps of paper he finds. Absolutely amazing how his creativity inspired him to make such beautiful structures from absolute scratch. Awesome how you’ve interjected his story into your narrative on paper builds. Humbly think there’s a lot to learn from kids like Abeg.
He shows us all that what our eyes see, we can make. If only we let our imagination do the work for us.
Whatever it is, an old plastic straw, coffee stirrer, mickey d’s ice cream cover and go on and on. It all can be made into something marvelous and in scale.
Thanks 🙏 very much for sharing
And we are aiming to finally meet next year if he can visit America. Still friends, and I love watching him grow up through Facebook.
Thanks for taking the time to make these video. I was out of the hobby for 25 years and it like a different universe now.
It is awesome that you are promoting cheap ways for people to do this amazing hobby, and for promoting young people!
For the piece you just cut out I would have added relief to the flat scene detail. When I learned how to make card stock models, I learned how to do relief to the flat surfaces so that they don't look so flat. Cheers from an old modeler in eastern TN
Great DIY video from DJs trains. Thanks much!
I have to get a few of these for the layout now!!! Fantastic idea DJ!
Looks nice. Cheap and don't even have to weather the buildings as they're "preweathered". Both money and time savers.
Absolutely love this idea! And the story!
thanks a lot dj!
i'm feeling so special after watching this video :)
and i loved your background buildings . they are so realistic,
Nice Job! Those print-outs for the background buildings turned out good and realistic. Also, very touching about your subscriber!!
That's a great idea! Thanks DJ!
You are the man DJ. Always enjoy your videos 👍
If you want to see some really incredible card models look at Halinski's website and MicroArtWorks. Halinski does ships, armour, planes, steam engines etc. MicroArtWork.com has a 1/96th scale crawler from the Apollo program. 14000 pieces🤯
Great video. Started using cardstock about 6 years ago. My skills are slowly getting better. Fun stuff
I hope to be getting into this hobby soon as ill be getting my own house. Using paper I would have never thought of that!
I know what you mean DJ. It's all about the moments that take our breathe away. Another great video brother. I'll be checking out Kingmill for 3D buildings right from here. Thanks for sharing. Cheers!
THIS IS GENIUS - THANK YOU
Thanks for posting the web site for the backdrops. Mine came in today, only took 3 days. These are outstanding I got 8 so far.
Another great tip! I appreciate it! Keep up the good work!!
I checked out their website, and was really impressed! Thanks!
Awesome video, DJ! You have a new subscriber buddy! You rock
Thanks! I have over 60 videos so hopefully there will be some others you like too.
Looks great. We use them in HO scale for background buildings. Thanks for sharing.
DJ cool work, noticed the PLE running by!
Thanks for the video ....just a suggestion...we use these on a large layout and make a duplicate copy to place behind the original mounted copy . We then cut the windows out of the mounted version. Using black foam board for the mount, the window depth adds a lot to the building. Thanks again for sharing
Cool idea!
Sounds great!
That looks awesome. Going to see if any look good around my paper mill scene
Paper buildings are a trick we tend to forget about nowadays. I'm modeling Peterboro, NH (Model RR Planing 2000) and need to scratch build all the buildings after guesstamating their sizes from old photos. I'm using thick graph paper (school supplies section of the drug store) to build the initial 3D mockups. It's cheap and easy to build them, and you don't end up wasting styrene if new information leads you to redoing a model.
If it is the long sheets, that may be realistic backgrounds, and are fantastic and legit.
The amtrack train reminds of what I might do It also reminds me of when I was younger. I want to a show sorta thing and there was a layout of trains running around and I touched the cars on a Santa Fe train and only the engine kept going. The driver of the train noticed it and recopeled the cars.
Dig your videos DJ. Awesome story about your new young friend from around the world. I'm an RC pilot/builder and I pick up tons of supplies at the Dollar Tree Store. Ultra Strong Foam Board (Readi-Board from R.L Adams Plastics) 20x30, 1$. Cardboard boxes, tubes, triangles, spheres, many shapes and many sizes, 1$. Plastic cups, paint brushes, Popsicle sticks, bamboo skewers, 1$. Anyways you get the idea, and maybe you already know. Cheers buddy, keep up the good work.
Walmart and Dollar General Store has that foam board as well. I am not sure about Family Dollar stores though.
Very cool stuff. I want to try it.
Thanks DJ, I'll check out his channel
Hey DJ, Love the video and the channel Im from England and I just wanted to let you know that we use cheap card buildings on our layouts the two main companies are Superquick and Metcalfe. Also there is a company that makes print out buildings called Scalescenes you might wanna check out. cant wait for the next video mate :)
Saw something similar at a hobbytown usa in knoxville, tn and at the national train show in atlanta. Not sure who made them
Unbeleivable! I will probaly do this on my Ho scale layout, prices at the hobby shop are sky high now!
I use these and other brands for my very long background which is mainly city industrial. 26 feet of background and people think it is 3-D!!! I also take photos and make two copies of each building, then cut out the windows on one of them and used the second copy behind the first, so the windows look recessed. If done well, it looks 3-D as well. Also, I sometimes use paper-brickwork to add a little depth to the sides of the buildings you can see from the fascia. Cheers!
Just waiting for my N scale ruler to come in so I could start hand cutting some buildings that are unique to a location.
You are so right!
I love this video very nice
Many many thanks
I saw a modeler from Japan use the the pics on the boxes that kits came in.
Great video DJ! What was the RUclips channel of your friend in Bangladesh, I can't see it here? Cheers, Dan
Hey DJ, what do you use as the back drop board , to mount the buildings on to?
ok note to self , watch the video all the way. foam board.
lol!!!! That made my night.
Hi great tutorials! Do you know where I can get 1:32 scale paper buildings? Thank you
not on the top of my head, since I usually deal with smaller scales.
Check out digicom for paper intermodal containers too. $5.95 for print out PDFs, vs $35 plastic ones.
I read good reviews about it too.
We have discontinued the sale of our Radical Flats line of backdrop prints.
Currently we have no products available for sale.
+Demasys I know, I made this video a few years ago. Thank you for making such a great product. Hope all is well.
+djstrains im not the maker. the text was from their website.
What was the thick board that you used, and what is it's cost. & where can I get some.
hardboard is found at any home improvement store like lowes or Home Depot. It is way cheaper than plywood, and they can cut it there.
i agree with you 110% when i got back in 3 yrs ago i about got the idea not to do this again.
DJ, I have plenty of black folk board that I would like to put paper walls on it, but I want it to be 3D. Like put windows in it and accessories on them too. But as you said I don’t really have an imagination. I know I can print out the walls and all, but I am not sure about putting in the styrene windows & doors. Is there anyway you could help me with that? I love watching all your videos. You such an inspiration to me!
Excuse me, I meant to say black foam board 😮😂
When I get home I’ll reply with an awesome magazine with the article about doing it.
I made the exact same one and it worked flawlessly.
Ok, google N SCALE RAILROADING magazine
MAY JUNE 2011
It’s pages 30-33
Yes, imagination and a few bucks are everything.
Time for you to get into 3d printing , make what you want!
I agree with the price complaints! I have seen buildings online and at hobby stores 20-40 dollars. 20-40 dollars for plastic? No way! I have seen some 50-60 dollars too! Don't get me started on 100 dollar train cars and 700 dollar locomotives...
Suggestion....,use black foamboard. You don' t have to hide the edges....already done !😀
+I'm Gumby Dammit !! you win best youtube name, lol.
Dude i was just about to say it ;)
I make stuff out of paper too but not like buildings or any of that. I just build paper train models because I can’t afford real model trains. PaperCraft is for some reason very addictive
Hey DJ - Kingmill seems to have ceased operations. I know this video is several years old but do you know of another source to get high quality HO scale building images? I need some tall city apartment buildings for my new layout I am building. I can not seem to find a good place to obtain the buildings in sheet form. Do you know of any? Thanks in advance.
currently, no.
Hi sir..im from the philippines and ive been making my actual structures using illustration boards ..i have no access and funds in buying kits..do you have any ideas you can share on creating an actual structure such as a house or a shed/cabin and not just a backdraft using the printed ones..? Thanks.

THESE ARE ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE! IF YOU FIND IT IN A HOBBY SHOP, THEY ARE BOOTLEG!!!
another great site for paper buildings is Clever Models.
Unfortunately this is the message on the kingmill website on 8/15/20. “We have discontinued the sale of our Radical Flats line of backdrop prints.
Currently we have no products available for sale.” None the less there are other vendors and you can make your own from your own photos.
As per Kingmill owner "if they are sold in a hobby shop, they are illegal photocopies". He said how you can only buy these through his website, and stores like Esther's are photocopying them and selling them illegally.
Or use black foam core but it is more expensive.
Radical flats discontinued?
sadly since this video was made, but I believe other companies have stepped up since then.
DJ,thanks for the info but thats not available any more
Yeah, this video is years old. I was hoping a new company would take over or this video may inspire people to think differently about materials needed for scratch building.
I was just going to order direct from the guy.
What scale
N scale, but this company is now closed. sorry.
The web site dos not work i was lust in there every thing came up but modeling .
try this instead:www.realisticbackgrounds.com
Lots of free stuff online
I called kingmill today to introduce my self, and tell them about the video and how much I like their product. He tells me that the store I bought them from (Esthers in Pittsburgh) was selling bootleg copies! I had no idea! He says he is selling them for a friend to help pay for the guys daughter's college. That is a shame when a hobby store has to stoop to selling counterfeit products. Makes the hobby look bad.
Instead of cutting, gluing to foam board, and then cutting again. Couldn't you begin by gluing it to the board and cutting once?
Looks great DJ! But you know as well as I do.....the quality and realistic qualities are less than average. All though they do make FLATS for about 6 bucks for 3 buildings. Like radical flats. You got it. Save money? Cut out the Starbucks kids! Then you'll be richer. How much? Well......let' see.....5 bucks a day x 30? 150 bucks a month on coffee savings. Brew it at home homey.
company quit making them anyway. I still like the backgrounds from REALISTIC DESIGNS in Duquesne Pa. I use them the most now on new layout. I agree about the starbucks. Same with how much people waste on cigarettes or beer. Thats train money!!!
Farjan Abeg
Fantastic, thank you for the video!
I want to create a personal small idea of the gigantic Hamburg Hbf, paper is a great way to do it. Check out the Joswood GmbH website and prepare to be amazed with the gigantic reproduction of the Leipzig Hbf in lasercut, paper/cardboard is the way to go!
I did find the web site on page 4 i think not on page 1.
try this instead: www.realisticbackgrounds.com
yes, it was $4.99 as opposed to the $1.00 for white.
Kingmill no longer puts out RADICAL FLATS
awe man, that sucks, but hopefully someone sees a need for that in the market and fills it.
A great RUclipsr just showed me a free website for paper kits! wordsworthmodelrailway (dot) co (dot) uk
They closed their site.
Yeah, older video, but some companies are stepping up. Look in comments and google for new companies making these.
