And then the writer of the Battle Hymn heard the vulgar words of John Brown's Body and thought them not fitting of the conflict that was occurring and wrote the Battle Hymn's Lyrics to replace them. She nearly lived to see one of our presidents try to make the Battle Hymn of the Republic the national anthem, but there was a number of Democrats who blocked the effort, and 20 years later we put the Star Spangled Banner as our anthem instead.
