Just got back from 3rd visit to Tokyo in 6 months, great place to go, if you live on the West Coast grab a under 600.00 round trip fare when they go on sale on Singapore or JAL and go have a blast!

" More or less you're right regarding shipping but shopping otaku goods in Akiba is something I don't want to miss when in Tokyo. No website or online shop can deliver that atmosphere.
not only...nothing beats buying directly there in person since shipping expenses can be high depending on where you live abroad. And there are things you can only buy in akiba (or any other anime store in ikebukuro, shinjuku, den den town, etc) that you cannot find easily online and for a cheap price.
Yea. Online shops usually won't have stock for goods that's been released for a while (like few years back), so there are actually better chance of hunting them down in physical stores (as some stores don't always only sell all the latest releases, but stuffs that's been released for a while. Also not to mention some shops sell collections good such as anime character figures etc that are categorizes as "pre-owned", but there are sealed in the box and never been opened, so technically they are no different from new.
Akiba is still my fave place in Tokyo to visit. Going back to Japan in March after 2 years and am dying to see some of the new places like the new Radio Kaikan Bldg. Yodobashi Camera is a fave place for me to visit too.

Akihabara is not the computer/electronics mecca it used to be, but I prefer it that way. I can get my computer or portable radio online as you noted. I enjoy Akihabara for its sub-culture relevance. Many traditional or old people don't recommend the district because of its focus on anime/manga, maid cafe or Music Idol connection (AKB48 has their theater and cafe there). Besides the arcades and computer stores. It can also include some not so reputable establishments that hire young school girls to have a conversation with you with added services that can include a visit to a nearby Love Hotel. So for many Japanese, its discouraged to visit it now days. They would rather recommend visiting Shibuya or Harajuku for example. But I think Akihabara will still remain a very alluring area to visit because of how unique it is. Lets see how it evolves in another 20 years.

Akihabara isn't really what i expected. Most of the stuff you can order online and ship worldwide. The only plus side is you get to see what you are buying. They got tons of stuff on display. Also i find buying manga and doujinshi easier too. Its still worth visiting, but i was a bit disappointed. Internet is the new era, if you know what you are buying, you can buy it online :)

More or less you're right regarding shipping but shopping otaku goods in Akiba is something I don't want to miss when in Tokyo. No website or online shop can deliver that atmosphere.
