My favorite of Refn’s filmography that I’ve seen. Largely saw the film the same way as you, but it was really interesting to see the actual connections to the fashion industry made directly. Great work!
You are my absolute favourite RUclipsr. Your essays are deep, well-made, coherent, and insightful. It's such an honor to learn from your argumentations!
Your vid was not what I expected re the movie breakdown, but it was beautifully written and thought provoking. I didn't think this movie could create even more tangents but your video created them for me.
This was such a visually stunning movie. It beautifully shows the coldness that the fashion industry can have toward models. The moment when the main character says "They want to be me" is so important. It's a very isolating place to be in, but you don't realize this as your ego rises. This sets the person up to be taken down by someone (who may see them as competition). The film artistically portrays the competition that people can have against one another and also how subjective beauty can be - she arrived at the right place at the right time and they made her a star. I think she should have left with the nice photographer guy. :) Anyway, loved this movie!
On paper I always thought TND was suppose to be Refn's magnum opus. His style just fits so perfectly for the story, characters and setting. The cold, alien, slow acting makes sense for the superficial nature of the characters. Most of them being sadistic and narcissistic also fits with the setting and the message the movie is going for, unlike some of his other films where it feels repetitive. His Beautiful, self indulgent cinematography feels purposeful for the setting and themes of beauty and grandeur. Where I think the movie really suffers is structure, and incomplete characters. I really like Jesse's story on paper, a seemingly innocent girl who is actually very self aware of the power of her beauty and who's true colors get revealed as she rises above her competition. But her turn is not handled very subtly and not much happens afterwards. We really only get two scenes of Evil Jesse, and her dialogue is very literal in explaining she uses her beauty for selfish reasons. And in between those two scenes she basically goes back to being innocent when she goes to Ruby's place, and it kinda drags since her character is stuck from progressing. I thought the time her and Ruby hanged could've been used to flesh out the true intentions of her character. Since Ruby was probably her closest friend that might accept her darker personality. I think them growing closer would have made Ruby's infatuation and the following sex scene seem more natural, as oppose to Ruby just basically raping her with no built up and getting mad afterwards. Ruby was kinda of all over the place as well, she seemed more grounded then the other model girls but equally as narcissistic. I wasn't sure if she hated or was in love with Jesse as she was occasionally cold to her. That's probably where Refn's habitual character type didn't fit in well. Jena still acted pretty great, but as the deuteragonist her journey and character were kinda hard to follow. I still like the first half of the movie a lot as things progress nicely, and getting introduced to the dark modeling world through Refn's eyes is very exciting and eery. Jesse is a very relatable character and doesn't feel as distant as other Refn protagonist. A lot of the Characters work well with Refn's style like the two models, the eccentric male fashion designer, and Keanu Reeve's character. But the end gets muddled with a lot things happening at once. And while I like what the built up ultimately leads to I think it would have been more impactful if we had a better sense of Jesse's character.
I am so excited for this!! Edit: It was amazing! I love this movie for its visuals and this analysis does it justice and pointed out things I never noticed.
I have always had an issue with movies that overly narrate, whether its by cliche lines like "As you already know" or by telling us something rather than showing it. Neon Demon feels like a more visual story as well as a modern fairy tale. Honestly, when Film4 was showing Neon Demon after Climax, it made me wonder if I made the schedule lol. Some people are just so used to hyper=realistic cinematography that the surreal or the more boldly visual can disorient them. My little brother, for instance, thought of the movie Crimson Peak as something he can hear but not watch because it is so vivid in its colour palette. For me, a lot of the discomfort in the first act, like with the gold shoot is that Elle is supposed to be playing a character who is much younger than the criteria for applying so all these scenes of professionals smearing paint on her and having her parade in lingerie always felt more uncomfortable to me. Her youth does harken back to the pop starlets of the 90's where the most marketable image was a balance between youth and sexiness, dipping into the latter but dressing it up in the former. This does tie in with your ad campaign comparisons as it is showing how Jesse is extremely marketable. Gigi's glamour makeup makes sense because, if you have work done, there's the pressure that it needs to appear convincing and natural, enhancing what was already there. Not to mention, heavier, more dramatic makeup could also be fueling Gigi's paranoia of scars showing because heavy and dramatic makeup can either cover or distract from perceived flaws. This was an interesting look at aesthetics because, often, visuals and art are often dismissed. In Neon Demon though, like the fashion industry, visuals are everything.
Thank you for the wonderful analysis. Your video is both beautiful, deeply attentive to detail and intelligent. It really struck me how Jesse, Gigi and Sarah all look so similar. They all reminded me of an early 90s Karen Mulder. I was also interested in how much Jesse’s look leaned on the 70s whilst GIgi and Sarah had a very “addicted to love“ 1980s look for much of the film, especially Gigi. I’m not sure what happened to Ruby in the end. But it was extraordinary. This movie is definitely underrated
I don't know how to get this message to whoever made this video but please let them know this review is amazing. Absolutely fantastic job taking this film apart. Like honestly this is so good.

This film was wonderfully entertaining to me. I wouldn't have admitted that the first time I watched it because of all the horrible reviews. The costume designing always plays a crucial in a movie's plot I believe, and in this case it was also beautifully done.... left me very pleased. I might be biased but something about abbey lee in this film is riveting! She makes everything better.
Such a unique experience especially considering constant garbage with same plots, same ideas with some sprinkles added.. Most will have no idea what is going on here but if you do, it's enthralling. Fictional? Well, you've seen the symbols hundreds of times and the claims of methods used. Neon Demon really opens up your mind to the nasty possible truth to maybe there is more than just looks and money at play here..
I'm late to the party, but this movie is in my top-5 of all time and I must say that this analysis is on point and beyond. Even if the script evolved everyday, this is such a smart movie and every visual has something to say about the story and I feel like you've got everything down and beyond. I wish everyone understood that movie like you did!!
I loved the fashion in this movie. But for sure if someone has psychological issues such as anxiety or an eating disorder, I’d just be wary. So worth watching in my opinion tho.
I'll venture a guess and say that the problem people have with the voiceover lays more on the editing than on your voice. I read the comments, I like your English, I like your voice in general and I do like the way you use it in here but I still find a little unnerving the way these really long strides on it's cadence suddenly halt on one or two words before coming back. Find a way to put those halts in the right spots and you'll be ready to rule the world G R E A T V I D E O bravo! looking forward to more from you
So in the end, you see Jesse (or someone that looks like her) walking in a desert wearing the same leather jacket that Sarah was wearing when she accompanied Gigi to Gigi's last photoshoot. What does that mean? This movie is full of symbolism.
I love your content, but I just wish you wouldn't have so much background music all the time it makes it a little hard to focus on the actual content of your video. I really don't mean this as a negative comment!! I am a huge fan of your videos!!
The one thing that still confuses me about this amazing film is... why did they cast a megastar like Keanu Reeves in a bit part, then cast a guy who looks so much like in as the fashion designer?
A bit over reaching to call this a movie about woman’s experiences and the experience of beauty in women when the only women shown are blonde and white. It barely touches the surface of women’s experiences or the world of beauty. Please call it what it is: a movie about WHITE blonde women’s beauty, which is already the highest beauty standard in the world.
I agree, completely. The director wanted the film to be a horror movie about beauty, it definitely doesn't cover every experience- not even close and the realistic on screen moments are ones that only a few will experience. I do feel the aspects of shaming women for age, having work done, makeup/no makeup, life experience, body type, the forced competition, being belittled over looks, etc are very real experiences that women unfortunately go through very often. In my analysis, I'm taking the 3 "types" in a conceptual sense like manufactured, age, etc to be applicable rather than the surface value of on screen imagery that falls short
@@CleverAndChic totally- not a critique on you obviously you didn’t make the movie. But just wanted to point out that indeed in the film itself it is a very surface level idea of what women go through. You’ve done better when you in depth of it than the even the film did itself. For example, Like the age shaming in the movie, but the woman herself still looks 18-20 so doesn’t exactly cover the scope of how bad age shaming can actually get. Your video was wonderful as usual I just have my own reservations about the film lol.
@@minamanzar1409 in some ways your comments actually strengthen the idea that this movie is about women's struggle as a whole. Don't get me wrong, I am a black woman and I was to see diverse representation of all experiences. But I think by having the main character very conventionally pale, feminine, blonde, skinny, young etc. it almost amplifies the disgusting ways women are degraded as even those that are praised for their "good genes," and are glorified for and during their youth are actually abused under the system that doesn't treat them with true respect. I think there are so many ways we're can approach the female experience, I think it's fair that this movie zeroes in on one instead of tackling every element.
@@mchjsosde Sure, except every movie tackles only this angle of the beauty industry so he's showed us absolutely nothing we didn't already know. I can name a hundred movies like this (black swan comes to mind), and just about no movies that talk about any other perspective on this subject in this manner. White women's abuse is still abuse, and still valid, but the fact stands that unless you do not represent the worst of the abuse, you do not represent the issue as a whole. Considering how no movies like this are made with black or asian women in mind, it basically does not go in depth to the worst of the experience, which means it does not even come close to solving the issue. "When the most oppressed of us are free, then we will truly be free". If this was a one off movie focusing on white women I wouldn't care, but its the only type of movie like this that is made in hollywood, and only centers around white women, and it was quite honestly a bad movie with no new take and no thoughtful insight on the "female experience". He's allowed to make this movie, and zone in on only one experience, the experience of the skinny blonde white woman, the beauty standard and the most privileged in the beauty industry and the world, but he should NOT be praised fro brining any insight or thought-fullness onto the subject of beauty, since he did not. This type of movie has been made a thousand times.
@@mchjsosde also thats the strangest part of what you said - that being white blonde and skinny is the "good genes" and thats the women that get sexualized and treated badly for being beautiful - untrue. i am dark skinned with black hair not white at all and I am also considered on the higher side of "attractive" and have experienced everything in this movie except a thousand times more than these women because being south asian means i also experienced racism and fetishization alongside that. Now THAT would be a story about beauty that hasn't been told. White women are not the only women who can be found attractive, and the women from other races who are found attractive are given even WORSE abuse.
For Hedi Slimane’s time at Saint Laurent I always refer to his designs as SLP since he defined the SLP aesthetic! Other than that it’s always YSL to me haha thank you 🖤

Even if the script evolved everyday, this is such a smart movie and every visual has something to say about the story and I feel like you've got everything down and beyond. I wish everyone understood that movie like you did!!
i love ur voice it's so soothing
I love this movie and everything abt it! Its one of my favs if not the fav.
I loved the fashion in this movie. But for sure if someone has psychological issues such as anxiety or an eating disorder, I’d just be wary. So worth watching in my opinion tho.
Bella Heathcote and Abbey Lee are frightening in this movie
Yes! The permanent saccarine smiles on Gigi gives me chill. Did you know that Abbey really hit Elle's face? Was not intentional but man!!!
Find a way to put those halts in the right spots and you'll be ready to rule the world
G R E A T V I D E O bravo!
looking forward to more from you
So in the end, you see Jesse (or someone that looks like her) walking in a desert wearing the same leather jacket that Sarah was wearing when she accompanied Gigi to Gigi's last photoshoot. What does that mean? This movie is full of symbolism.
I love your analysis
the major flaw of this movie is that no one ever becomes a top model in L.A.
What do you mean?
Seriously, ignore the comments about ur voice!!! U do u and i LOVE it
literally a gorgeous voice
Oh my god, I LOVE your voice!!!
super in detailed analysis
I know... i know... this is underrated movie! Thanks for talk about Neon Demon.
OMG SHES FIXED HER AUDIO 👸
I love your content, but I just wish you wouldn't have so much background music all the time it makes it a little hard to focus on the actual content of your video. I really don't mean this as a negative comment!! I am a huge fan of your videos!!
Was just thinking about this movie earlier
Elle Fanning is one of the most beautiful people I've ever seen.
I can’t with the voice, i just can’t
I watched this movie the other night just so I can watch this video.
Does anybody know other accounts like hers?
ModernGurlz and Mina Le :)
Also Fashion Fox Art, it’s still a small channel but it covers similar fashion related topics

I simply adore this film!
This movie is so underrated
omg i wish this video never ended
This movie is of my favorite directorial references
Where is the LSP video its gone from your channel 😭
This movie reminds me every Next Top Model serie
OMG!!! BETTER THAN MY DREAMS
The one thing that still confuses me about this amazing film is... why did they cast a megastar like Keanu Reeves in a bit part, then cast a guy who looks so much like in as the fashion designer?
plsss do a Bridgenton one! of the main character
Can you make a video about Mrs. Chan in "In the Mood for Love"?
i love this movie so much
i LOVE this movie
you should do olivia hayes of get even
Ce film ne colle pas avec le reste. Il doit avoir une histoire particulière. Rencontre ?
this is such a great analysis video however the way you talk is a bit distracting sometimes 🥺
Did you call YSL "SLP" because that's a fashion crime in itself 😂
(Jk ofc, loved the video ❤)
For Hedi Slimane’s time at Saint Laurent I always refer to his designs as SLP since he defined the SLP aesthetic! Other than that it’s always YSL to me haha thank you 🖤
Coffee?
So was her boyfriend in the movie her age? Or what? I didn't enjoy the movie, good acting I suppose
why do you sound✨𝒻𝒶𝓃𝒸𝓎✨?
Why does the tone of voice sound like it wants me to call a number for... like you hear after midnight in TV commercials?
It's really hard to listen, although the information and research is really good.
wait why do you talk like that 😭
This movie sucks lol
The ending mostly
elle fanning is not beautiful, she gets roles of girls treated as beautiful through nepotism
