for all the people commenting about elle not looking like a model - that's the point. her not looking like a typical is model, yet being so beautiful and young, is what draws the casting directors for the modeling agency in. she is the new trend, and the usual look is no longer in fashion.
It's amazing how shallow people are when behind a keyboard. I think Elle Fanning looks beautiful. And so did the other women in the film too. But because Elle is meant to be the most beautiful, they feel the need to belittle her. The same would have happened if Jena Malone or Abbey Lee was chosen instead to the role of Jesse.
Elle Fanning was excellent in this. Jenna Malone was fantastic. NWR is a genius. Abbey Lee however was a wonderful surprise. I thought her performance was terrific.
I absolutely fell in love with Abbey Lee after seeing this movie. Her eyes pierce through my soul. She is incredibly stunning. I wish I could just hang out with her and see what kinda person she is.
That was an excellent interview. The host not only saw the movie but analized it, set interesting scenarios, and chose very intelligent questions. Instead of the typical "how did you feel by working with him?", "and what's your favorite horror movie!"
where is jena malone?!?! she easily steals the show...and dare i say oscar worthy performance! she has that steely demeanor towards the end and its so powerful.
blind foldme I think she couldn't do much publicity because she was heavily pregnant and had a child right around when the movie came out. At the premiere of the movie, she's super pregnant. I do wish that there were more interviews with her about this movie, though; she KILLS it.
abbey lee is soooooo so so beautiful in the movie and here and she has a great style, great haircolor, not bleached but actual natural haircolor or at least what looks like it she has such a stunning facial structure
Refn is one of the few modern visionary directors, and he's just getting started. Someday he'll be up there with Malick and Kubrick. Bronson, Valhala Rising, Drive, Only God Forgives and The Neon Demon. All unique and all excellent!
All his movies so far that have huge impact rely heavily on the musical score - I have watched Neon Demon twice now - it mesmerizes. I do agree Refn is a visionary Director and look forward to seeing what he does next. What will he be without Cliff Martinez? He has been accused of style over substance, being pretentious.... for me in the case of The Neon Demon in particular if the movie was just style I would not have felt so uneasy yet mesmerized - he can grab your attention and create a movie that deserves many repeat viewings and discussion with other movie fans.
I think she is beautiful and very talented, but her face creeps me out too, especially when she is more skinny than usual. I think it's because she kinda reminds me of Gollum.
I think Elle have and angelic, pure, ethereal stunning beauty. And those characteristics were key to her character. She was the ingenue in a world of vicious, relentless witches. I don't find Abbey pretty at all. In the movie without make up her face looked skeleton like. But her performance was good. Jena's character was one of her best performances of her career. He character was very layered and she delivered in amazing ways. It's an award worthy performance.
WHY were so few questions directed at Abbey Lee?! I was most interested in her take on this movie, or fashion, or...food. She's so perfect I could just listen to her talk about anything for hours :)
I defined my life around the trauma of not really being pretty. My neurosis are massive blobs of anguish around that fact. My sex life is completely directed at my sexual nature of seducing, at any cost. Because of the urgency to compensate, capture. To fill that hole of rejection carved in my soul. There's quite a bit of neon demon inside me.
This film is very beautiful but i was struggling in convincing myself that Elle is prettier than Abbey through the whole film. Elle is a beautiful girl yet Abbey is a GODDESS.
I know what you mean but I think in the film she wasn't necessarily meant to be less attractive than Jesse, but the fact was that she had had her time on the modelling scene and was now getting too old and "washed up" liked used goods. like there is always someone ready to take your place. But yes it was kind of distracting that Elle looks nothing like a model and Abbey is a very amazing one...
+Crystal Punky yeah very much so. think Refn would have been better served casting some nobody actress who had that "it" factor the film was referring to as opposed to running with someone established like elle.
Abbey was beautiful but like Gigi, her beauty wasnt pure, at least anymore, like Jesse's was. She didn't have "IT," and her seasonal demand was dying off.
I think, with the main character, they intentionally went with someone who looked vulnerable, rather than visually perfect. We're not supposed to perceive her the way everybody in the movie does.
Refn is a complicated soul, who's also a dad with two daughters listening to Frozen in the background. It's the dichotomy of every creative person that always fascinates me. Hell, even the two sides of non-creative people are fascinating. He speaks how things are written, which is unusual for a visual expressing person. Sarcasm is more interesting when it's spoken by earnest people. The movie was so incredibly... ART, but Francis Bacon, brilliantly dark.
I'm laughing so hard for the 8:20 - 8:40 part, his eyes closed while moving gracefully his fingers, the interviewer saying he's a creep, and then Refn's sardonic and pleased smile, I put that scene on repeat. By the way, he's a creep and that's OK, otherwise he wouldn't be the genius he really is
Its weird, his films Drive, Only God Forgives, and this one are the only films I've ever watched then watched again next day :p I think I did that with Fightclub though too! But I watched Only God Forgives like 5 times lol the song 'sister' in that movie is like my favorite instrumental song
I'm sort of angry with the interviewer, because he asked so much about the Neon Demon in context or concept based on the the beauty industry, and it's so much deeper than that, every scene had a hidden message, the film sequence was perfectly propotioned according to symmetry as Refn said, beauty itself. With this film he gave beauty a symbolism in every aspect so when you reach the final act of the movie, it feels like a full circle, Refn and the cast/crew gave us a perfect hypotenuse.
I think its cause they want you to find all the symbolism while watching the film since it makes the rewatchability that much more interesting of an experience and just revealing it all makes it less likely for someone to go back and to find new things everytime they watch the film.
Still remember watching his first movie Pusher in a movie theathre. It really made an impact on me.. very powerful at that time in the 90's and some excellent performances by the main actors. A few of those slowly turned into respected movie stars after Pusher. 2 me the movie felt honest and very ambitious. A real raw movie that almost looked like a docu movie in certain scenes, very true to the subject at hand. Actually there is atleast one actor from his initial trilogy (Pusher being the first movie) that couldn't make further appearances in some planned material due to serving jail time in Denmark. So.. there is actually a 4th movie that was planned by Refn in that series that never got made and never will be. I never got to watch it in my home town(DK town) since they did not show it here(f*ckers, showing other movies that are totally crap though). :)
Refn's movies may not be high works of intellectual art, but one thing is for sure that he knows what he likes and goes for it and never tries to superficially imitate other directors. All his movies are made for the cinema, for that cinematic experience
its funny you say that. i was thinking the same thing while watching the neon demon. i'm a huge fan of his work, but have struggled to understand if his films are "good" by any classic measure. particularly in regards to only god forgives. it wasn't until watching neon demon that i realized how much i was enjoying myself while watching that, i didn't really care if the film was "good". it didn't really have to have any rhyme or reason to it, it was just pure enjoyment. it's like high art equivalent of dumb fun.

Abbey Lee is so stunning. I hope she becomes less shy
She's a great actress too. Saw the film yesterday and she was so good in it
Yes she is super shy =)
Interesting how people who are more reserved are quickly labeled as shy or quiet.
It's always the quiet ones....
She is more an introvert
what an intellectual and creative man. his brutal honesty, humour and openness is so great to listen to

he copied Kubrick so much in this movie so no, i would not put him next to him
