  • In part 2 we take the 4x4 Sprinter offroad to test it's capabilities.
    Engine Adventures strives to explore and test the AWD and 4WD systems of all crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. To do this we test vehicles in real world environments in a way that allows viewers to cross shop and explore any vehicle they may be interested in learning about.

    Nice Video.
    The Mercedes Sprinter is the only van that has the same international standarts worldwide. The tech specs on the sprinter are the same, in the usa, europe or somewere around the world. You can service them everywere. This is the reason why buyers choose the sprinter, if they want to travel a bit further .... 4x4 Sprinters have military standards, you see them in many countrys around the world.
    Transit, Ducato (Promaster) and the VW Crafter are build special for each areas. For examble, the north american ford transit looks the same like the european model, but the tech specs are totally different to the european transits.

      I haven't had much contact with UJOR or Quigley. There is a Nissan dealership here in Utah that takes the NVP and adds Titan XD transfercase, front differential, and half shafts. Basically they keep it all Nissan, I looked at them but haven't driven one yet.

      There are some roads where during the winter you need 4x4 and/or chains (California Sierras), so that could be one reason for a work van to have 4x4. I just bought a Sprinter with 4x4 for a van conversion and bought it with that in mind.

    Shining example of why you don’t 4x4 this van with OEM tires.
    If he had KO2 tires would have navigated no issues

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 года назад

      I wish that were the case. Having the right tires for the terrain certainly makes a huge difference. However, when the wheel is in the air better tires don't matter. What it really needs is lower gearing or a locking differential so that it can get more torque to the ground.

    • @Jsuttar
      @Jsuttar 3 года назад

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 года назад

      @@Jsuttar the camera makes it seem less steep than it is, but you may also have a conversion that has a better low range gear ratio. However, without a limited slip or locking rear differential it's not likely you would be able to make this climb. I don't know for sure how the conversions work, but I wouldn't think they would use the factory brake based traction control system.

    Turn off traction control. It works way better. Also tires make a big difference. I've had mine in a foot of snow, no issues.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  Год назад

      I tried both with and without traction control. It really depends on the situation. Traction control also seemed to turn off the brake based limited slip differential, meaning you get more power to the wheels, but don't have the ability to transfer power side to side on an axle. For deep snow, mud, and sand, probably better with traction control off. For areas where you're lifting a wheel like rocks or really rough dirt roads, traction control on is likely better.

  • @kodiak4240
    @kodiak4240 4 года назад +1

    let tire pressure down when off road. also turn the traction control off.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  4 года назад

      In this case I don't believe there was a traction control off button, but even with the most traction in the world this van just doesn't have the low range gearing to make the really steep climb while having to brake two wheels that essentially don't have any traction to transfer power to the wheels that do have traction. Airing down the tires helps offroad, but wouldn't have made a difference in getting the van up the steep hill!

    Hi from Russia

  • @510th
    @510th 3 года назад

    So you have the tires what looks like fully aired up, not even off road tires are used, and you just go straight up with no sense of how to maneuver obstacles… not sure what the point is.

    • @EngineAdventures
      @EngineAdventures  3 года назад

      Tires can make a huge difference depending on the terrain, but that's not the point of these tests. The steep hill has two lines, but it's so torn up now that even the easy line has some medium hard stuff. In the case of the Sprinter it simply lacks the torque needed to make this climb. It really needs a low range transfercase if it's going to be able to make climbs this steep. When two wheels (diagonally oriented) are basically in the air, it doesn't matter how good the tires are if the vehicle can't transfer power across an axle to the tires with traction.
