When we were kids my sister and I made a huge patchwork blanket out of our grandma's yarn scraps. It is ugly as hell and has all different yarn, thickness, texture, some patches are fuzzy, etc, but it was such a cool project and my mum still has it on her couch to this day.
In my mums hometown, there is an organisation which collects yarn scraps, to make blankets for refugees. This is where most of my scraps go these days. If you're too lazy/uninspired to use up your scraps, this is a great charity!
I’ve never knit socks, but a friend that appreciates hand made items asked if I could one day do socks for her. I just bought my first hank of sock yarn and 9inch circulars in the size I need for the socks. Not I just have to wind the hank and get ready to cast the socks on Sunday. I’m going to do vanilla socks by the crazy sock lady as the first pair. I’m really excited to be doing this and mind you I’ve only been knitting since the new year.

I knitted socks for my mom as one of my first proper knitting projects, and I used the exact same pattern as you. It's a really great project, and it taught me a lot about knitting. Good luck, and hope you have fun!

Circular needles are terrible and very difficult to work with. The first thing I ever knitted was socks and I used 4 double pointed needles. I always use the Ten-Step Snug Socks pattern developed by Paula Ausserer and Monica MacFarland. It was such a quick project and I finished them in a weekend.
Thanks for making this 70 yr old feel good about her scrap afghans and her granny squares from the 80’s going into three baby afghans. Your RUclips’s are awesome. And Toaster does need an Afghan.
My knitting/crochet group took our scraps and made granny square lap blankets to donate to our local hospice and veterans home
I have found your attitude towards scraps has really helped me change my perspective. I think because of the sunk cost fallacy I used to feel like I needed to use every last gram of yarn, especially with hand dyed skeins, but it's true that if I've knit a pair of socks, a yarn cozy and a few granny squares and am still left with 10 g of yarn, it's ok to let it go to someone else at that point. I've well and truly gotten probably 40+ hours of crafting out of it at that point so giving a small amount away isn't wasting money, especially if it then frees me up to move on to another project.
The magic knot ball from the Battenburg blanket could be used, along with the neutral colour, to make a matching cushion cover or hot water bottle cover. I'm at the construction stage of the same blanket and I'll have enough squares left over for a matching hot water bottle cover - it'll make a nice little set as a gift for someone.
Good idea! I have the magic knot ball finished now and just need to weigh it to see what I have. I'm guessing around 40 grams though!
I love seeing how other makers approach projects! You are so organized and methodical and I can see that that’s part of the fun of it for you. I, myself, approach projects with a thought in my head that I add to or edit from every time I work on the project. My intentions evolve as the project unfolds and there’s a touch of anarchy. I love that aspect of crafting. We are all so different and we love some of the same things for totally different reasons and have different methods. What a cool thing it is to be a part of!

Adding flowers to my crochet afghan as I’m watching. Thanks so much for the great ideas and plans. My version of scrap-free is one bin of each fingering, worsted and bulky and I’m well on my way. As a nurse I realize that reflection or assessment is an important part of plans and goals, but you really bring the process to energy and life. Thanks.

This journey of yarn sorting/ using and gifting has been inspirational Natalie. I have sorted my stash and am knitting scrappy socks for the homeless with a lot of my leftovers. I am also about to start a new blanket. I think too much stash is completely overwhelming and some organization and knitting/crochet plans are the way to go! #question. I love how well you use your scraps and how you know how many grams of yarns needed for the projects. I’d like to be good at this and use my leftovers especially my beautiful hand dyed yarns. Does it just take practice or is there an easy way to work out if you have enough to do a certain project. Like heels toes and cuffs? Or like the Battenberg squares. Hope that makes sense?
@@mlea79yes that makes sense, get a scale that does grams, Oz etc, usually a kitchen scale...and then start weighing your yarn, with out label, and see how much you really have, usually there is more than stated...work up some of your project, weigh it and the remaining yarn, are you a 1/4 of the way done with pattern, and used 1/3 of your yarn, 😮 you will run out😢 unless a) you make the project smaller, shorter or and/or a stripe/s here of another color, same weight/brand preferably and /or and at the end of the project for a trim row/s.
Weigh any remaining yarn and use the label with weight. And wrap yarn loosely around the label...you'll have all the info you'll need for later, and you'll have get a feel for the info you desire at a later date....😂❤😊
@@mlea79 toe up socks are good. As long as you get past the heel you can always shorten the leg/cuff

this was really encouraging to listen to as i was crocheting my first ever garment, i realized that i have had multiple balls of yarn sitting around my room for years and this inspires me to make something with them! heres hoping the next few months are super productive!

No Guilt just Joy with Intention is my take away lesson. Summer is my favorite season to knit socks and that’s exactly what I am doing right now. I have been been taking my scrap yarn to work and letting the kids there crochet or knit with it. Some are taking beads and making necklaces.

So inspiring, thank you for sharing your progress! :) Ironically I‘m kind of at the other end of the spectrum, I‘m still a fairly new knitter and impatiently waiting to accumulate enough fingering weight scraps to be able to start a fun scrappy project. :D Right now I‘m only at around 30g and I‘d love to make a blanket, so I‘ve got a lot of knitting still to do to get enough scraps. :D

😂❤ happy scrappy day....🎉 I want scraps, I usually play yarn chicken, esp for shawls, I use the last yard or so to make twisted ties, sometimes blending another yarn and/or some embroidery floss that has a metallic twisted into it, to make the tie...it's always pretty 😍 😊 any way, been sorting yarn ino the following categories: usually purchased at resale shops or deep end of yarn discount, to keep my hobby/rehab/collection affordable 😂😂😂🎉😂😊

#2 yarn I want to use for shawls, blankets, lapghans, scarves, hats to make for gifts..usually acrylic for ease of care for recipients 😊
#3 yarn for my students ( was my dream to offer private crochet or knitting classes, then Covid) so just started 3 months ago, have 5 students all on different schedules, of course, 😅 they get a skein of yarn and a hook for their 1st class and we make a sampler of stitches that makes a cowl...they go home with home work, when they come back we reverse back to the beginning stitches for a review....hopefully they start another project 😊
#4 yarn for projects others can use, sorted by weights and brand, for purchase at low price, for barter or give away to those on limited income and/or mobility. ❤❤❤

Wow, I enjoyed your video so much. My favorite is Quadrophenia, definitely going to look it up. I am currently busy with the exact same 'cleanup' process. Last winter I promised myself I am not going to buy any more yarn before al my scraps are used up. I LOVE making blankets, but unfortunately my closets are bursting out of its seams from all the previous projects. I mean, you can only use so many blankets. So earlier this my son's rugby team had a fundraiser for tour they are planning. I decided that I would donate a blanket for an auction they had. It was 'n very colorful Moroccan-tile blanket and I was blown away at the amount it sold for at the end. At the end I felt quite proud for the good cause it went for as well being able to share its prettiness, instead of just going to sit in closet. Next I made a big C2C of scraps (left over from a CAL subscription I completed.) This one I am donating to the church also for auction at a fundraiser. And currently I am working on a Tunisian crochet afghan of big squares (of four different colors) that I join is I go. A personal tip: I never start a square with a magic ring, I just don't trust them. I chain 4 or 5 (depending on the size ring I want), slip stitch to the first chain, and then work in that little circle it created.

Your organization inspires me!
Our family has worked frequently to be more environmentally responsible. During our Boy Scout years we worked hard to be good stewards of our natural resources including the people in our lives! I am glad to get more ideas how to do that with yarn. I do not want to see my husband as “cheap” but he worries abou how we will do when he retires . We will not expect anyone to take care of us, but we want to leave as light a footprint as possible! If you could share ways other then granny square projects or tiny projects, that would be awesome!! Good luck in your upcoming adventures ! Fingers crossed everything goes as you hope it does. You are living life as an adventure, and you should! Stay safe!

Hi Natalie, really weird, random question… now that you are no longer in New York, I can ask. What in the world is that black rectangle between your bed and your wedding poster??? Are those cords hanging down? And why are they always hanging exactly the same? I didn’t want to ask because it felt like an intrusion on your privacy. But to be honest, anytime you uploaded a video, depending how you were set up, the black rectangle was visible, and my eyes would wander that way trying to figure it out! The only idea I had was a fold down treadmill. I am such a dork! Please, please help me sleep at night! 😂 Judi
I remember your January video which prompted me to begin to keep a knitting notebook for my this year's knit from stash goal. I am very pleased with your progress and don't quite feel like I have accomplished half as much!. Not to worry- it is only August and Christmas is around the corner! YAY-If nothing else this year is slipping by so very fast. Might just end up being a multi-year goal. Congrats on your next move to TN.

Such a lovely video, and I too am working at getting rid of all the odd balls of yarn I have around, I’m not so organised in my planning though! Your scraps all seem to be the same weight, fingering mainly? I have bits and bobs in all different weight yarns so I’m donating to my local craft group, who do a lot of yarn bombing and there are a lot of new knitters/crocheters so they love to get their hands on any yarn they can! We are working at the moment on a Christmas tree made of 12cm squares, which will be stunning I think, especially as it’s been made by all different hands!

How do you finish blankets so fast? It takes me several months to make a pair of socks. I dont have central air. It prevents me from making larger items until September at the eqliest

What is an advent? Anyone?
It’s a package that you buy - they usually send 24 or 25 minis (usually 20g) for you to open daily from December 1st to the 25th.
Not necessarily just for the month of Christmas/Hanukkah etc.,as sometimes independent hand dyers do some type of theme “calendars” for other months of the year. But generally the idea is anywhere from 10-20 grams of each of the different day’s colors totaling usually anywhere from 12-31 days that is mailed out in advance so everyone can then open each day’s little package and use it that day, one a day with no 🫣 peeking. They’re time very consuming to create so usually that’s reflected in the price point. Sometimes the “calendar kit” comes with a 100 grams skein as well and may contain custom stitch markers/progress keepers or or other “goodies”.

What does advent yarn mean?
Almost certainly a yarn advent calander. Advent calanders are pretty common in the united states, where you get one small treat every day, or a passage every day, or light a candle every day through december leading up to christmas. In this case it would be a new skein of yarn every day, so you can imagine that adds up pretty fast. So mini skeins and micro skeins so you have a shot of doing one project with or using up the yarn each day. Which makes geting through them if you haven been on top of it a little pile of scraps to get through
Your scrap free 2023 inspired me to use my old Advents and knit a Cozy Comfort Throw. The timing of me knitting the blanket was perfect because my cousin got a breast cancer diagnosis and I was able to gift her the finished blanket to keep her warm during chemo. (Is a good prognosis, caught really early) 🩷🩷
