Except for relay races (where everyone started off at once), Olympic cross-country skiing and biathlon got short shrift from U.S. television until the 2000's since competitors (except in the relay races) didn't all start off at once, meaning that it was confusing for veiwers to know who was ahead. Nowadays, just about all major cross-country and biathlon races have a "mass start"(meaning everyone starts the race at once), and as a result, American television devotes more airtime to these sports since viewers know at a glance who is ahead.
