I visited the Herb Brooks arena in Lake Placid a few years ago. I walked in and broke down sobbing and overwhelmed with emotion. The greatest sports moment in history took place in that little crappy barn that barely held 7,000...But for two weeks in February 1980, it held the world.

FIFTY YEARS AGO, I WAS A LONE REDSKINS FAN IN AMERICA'S TEAM COUNTRY. I was in college, in the South, and away from home on that Thanksgiving Day. (Does anyone remember that the country was deep in recession and an oil embargo crisis, too?) I had no roommate for the second of two years (in 1974 - 1975). The recession has caused a drop in enrollment and sky-high gas prices, and gas rationing had limited travel. The University cut off the heating of public spaces in the Student Center and only provided bag lunches for lunch and Thanksgiving dinner. The only saving grace was the dormitory's fall semester gift from the 25-Year Alumni Class of 1949: a brand new 25-inch color television to watch the Thanksgiving Day football games in the dormitory's unheated lobby lounge. Sitting in my Navy Surplus store Peacoat, with the other dorm residents who couldn't afford to travel home for the short holiday, I gallantly cheered on the "Redskins" (please don't censor me in 2025), eating my two turkey sandwiches, brownie, apple, and a carton of Tang. With Roger Staubach (aka "Roger the Dodger," "Captain America," and "Captain Comeback") knocked out of the game, I boldly predicted and bet (my fellow frostbites) that the human Cyborg (Tom Landry), his team and his Quarterback were "going to take an L." Without breaking a sweat, the Cyborg sent in Clint Longley, an unknown human sacrifice. I was sure Landry would have to explain that, and I was expecting to enjoy watching his squirm in the post-game interviews about Washington's upset victory. Yes, I have a good memory. But what I remember most is that I pulled my Peacoat up and over my head, trying to dull the volume of the cheers and screams in my ears from the lobby full of ecstatic, hysterical Cowboy diehards. Over the years, for at least 25 class reunions, I was reminded of that day until Dallas went into decline about 20 years ago.
