    I love this video! Our first amaranth flour came in today and I was trying to see how to make bread, then went on to see what things that would appeal to us that we could do with the grain if we plant amaranth next season. Then I saw this and now I plant to do some of this, too. My husband and I used to love putting sprouts on salads and sandwiches and we've talked about growing microgreens but haven't yet. I'm ready to do this. Thank you for your videos!

    Amaranth is so easy to grow and it grows so fast. I grow it using half composted tree leaves or grass clippings covered by crushed straws. It normally will germinate within 3 to 4 days in June/July outdoor. There is no need to grow it as a microgreen.

      I'm growing 'regular' Amaranth. What is the difference between those and the micro ones? Aren't they the same seeds? How can I grow them micro instead of the regular sized ones- not that I don't like the bigger ones... they are stunning.

    • @ImusNoxa
      @ImusNoxa 2 года назад +3

      @@subtitledEN the only difference is when you harvest. Micro greens simply refers to flora that are in a growth stage between sprouts and "baby" plants, usually grown for about a week but before they start to develop true leaves.

      considering how large the plants actually get I don't think you'll get them to seed in such small space. You can grow a full sized one in a pot and get enough seeds from it to microgreen for quite awhile I would suspect. The flowers are quite the seed producing machines.

    • @raevynmikhail5481
      @raevynmikhail5481 3 года назад

      Winnow them. Take the seed heads of the plants off at about 4", leaving some of the leafy stalks. Hang them up side down to dry. Place dried seed heads in a pillow case and beat it against a hard surface to thrash the seeds and husks from the plant. Remove stalks and pour seeds and husks on a flat surface. Blow a fan on low onto them to separate and blow away the husks. If you're just talking about removing the initial seed husks from the micro greens, just blow them off... but they shouldn't stay on for long anyway.

      It will re-seed some independently if you let the plant go to seed and dry up. If you harvest the "top flowers" , whinnow them down to black seed then keep them in a cool dry place..great on salads or cooked. Similar to quinoe seeds. Leaves are eatible as well throughout growing season.

      Blanch it, like spinach it contains a compound that can cause kidney stones. It takes heavenly with some onions and eggs, make it like a Chinese fried rice. Fry some onions and add beaten eggs. Scramble that and throw in the Amaranth and take out of the stove. The heat from the stove is enough.

    Once you harvest can you put back under the lights and get a second or third cutting?

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  7 лет назад

      I never do, although some growers try this. It usually doesn't work because you harvest just above the root level, so there's nothing for the plant to grow back from!

      Thank you so much for replying! I was thinking of haying where they cut and then put water on it and get second or third cuttings. Glad I can benefit from your experience instead of relying on trial and error by myself. Great videos. Thanks for sharing!

    How many times can you regrow the microgreens before you would have to start a new growth from seed?

    • @epicgardening
      @epicgardening  7 лет назад +1

      I personally cut microgreens once and then grow a new tray, although greens like wheatgrass can be cut 2-3x before dropping in yield.

      Never heard of Bob's red Mill, but it probably wouldn't hurt to call and ask them if their seeds are treated with anything or processed in any way.
      If it's imported, depending on where you live, it might not be a good option as many imported things are treated (for legal reasons I think, but don't quote me)

    Long time since you posted this:) but we've just seen it via the YT algoryth...
    So, we've subscribed to watch your videos. You're doing very interesting works and have splendid videos, compliments, thanks for sharing your work.
    Firstly, Amaranth is a lovely plant indeed, and very ancient in Europe. I don't know where you are, but we're in Poland 🇵🇱 We forage those ancient species with beautiful black seeds. This one with purple stems and beige seeds is a different cultivar species.
    Three questions after watching this video abt amaranth micropurples. Oooops, microgreens:)
    1. Don't you worry about lowering the nutritional values of these microgreens since you cover it totally with black plastic in that first stage of growth? This makes the plants very much weaker and less nutrient, unless it's the goal, as it's in bleaching plants in garden by covering them up with very dark items to cut off day light (cichory, dandelion, asparagus, rhubarb etc.). We just thought it would be much healthier for the plant and consumers to cover them with translucent glass (we're against plastic, so we don't mention 'translucent plastic').
    2. Did you ever try to grow these greens not on soil with debris, but on clay substrate, in order to harvest whole plants (with roots) for consumption and not waste most of it? Our estimation is, you waste 9/10 (or so) of the whole plant, sadly.
    3. If not clay substrate, then have you ever consider taking them whole out, with roots, in order to use the whole plants once you rinse them well in water? Yes, there's a risk of soil remains..., so... question 2:)
    Just wondering, just asking. Thanks a lot, have a good harvest and Happy New Year 🌞 Anna, Tomasz & the team of Chwastozercy 🌿💚 (food anthropologists, chefs reenactors)

      This is just the genetics. Removing the green ones from the batch and only keeping the red through several generations will produce better results. If for microgreens, unfortunately this just comes down to the seed distributor.
