Sweeney was Charlie Sweeney, a man with the physical talent of Roger Clemens (who broke Sweeney's single game strikeout record) and the mental and emotional stability of John Rocker. For anyone interested in fascinating baseball stories, his career and feud with the Providence club and Old Hoss Radbourn in 1884 is a real doozy. Edward Achorn's "Fifty-Nine in '84: Old Hoss Radbourn, Barehanded Baseball, and the Greatest Season a Pitcher Ever Had" is a wonderful account of Providence's fantastic year, culminating in winning the first "World Series" ever.
