Thanks for the video Mark. Honestly never looked at it that way. Always use the low E and listen for the root of the 1 chord of the key. Have to use this method an see if it feels better. You seem to be feeling much better. It shows in your playing. Being sick makes everything feel like work. Even what we enjoy the most.
I’ve been playing by ear for a long, long time especially for rock songs. I think an even easier way to approach playing by ear is to start by figuring out what the chords are and in the order in which they appear. Learn the basic song and melody first, then you know the key and chord changes. The solos generally mimic the chords and changes, so from this point it should be easy.
I like your videos. Have you considered naming your videos based on what you're teaching? If I want to go back and re-watch it's hard to find. They're all labeled something like "This one trick..." Just a suggestion.
I used to do that. RUclips is very unkind to videos with such titles. I wish it were different. On my teaching site I label items by subject. It's actually a bit more involved than that too. RUclips's current algorithm heavily rewards watch time over percentage watch time. I make short videos (compared to others in the genre), so I need to have a much higher click-through rate for RUclips to surface my videos. At the end of the day, I teach music for a living. I need people to join my lists, which are linked to my videos (RUclips and other). For that to happen, RUclips needs to promote my videos. One final thought. It would help to know whether you've purchased any of my courses or joined my membership. So hopefully you've got an idea of why I do what I do. Like anybody in business, I have many customers.

Cool using this definitely is helpful
Years before I knew anything about music theory I knew D minor is the saddest of all keys…Nigel Tufnel wisdom that I’ll take to my grave.
Just don't utter the name of the song ...

It's good to have multiple ways. Sometimes the "chord first" approach works well, sometimes not.

It rhymes with table.
Chill Mark, you’re going to put us all out of business by showing them all the tricks! 😂 Jk do you have one of these for major scale?
LOL! (And yes is the answer.)
