I was in an abusive marriage. I loved having guests over to stay for a summer weekend or Thanksgiving because I knew I would get a break from my husband's moody, difficult, violent rages. My kids appear bright and enthusiastic and alert and curious to outsiders. They were happy to have guests over, too, for the same reason I was. They could show their father affection and hope that after the guests left that he would still love them back (he didn't). I left him in 2016 but it took me eight years to see that his behavior was not going to change and it was getting worse. It got better through 2012 and then it got worse. He did not turn on the kids until our oldest was 10 in 2015. That was my cue that I had to leave. Who knows what went on between these two women, but to me it seems the people who suffered the most were those six children Markis, Jeremiah, Devonte, Hannah, Abigail and Sierra. Next time, pay close attention to the people in your midst. Are the children in school? Going to the doctor regularly? Getting cavities filled and front teeth replaced? Are they growing? Does the 16 year old actually look like she is 16, or is she underweight and appear to look 7 years old? Because that is fucking nuts.
