The terror of this movie is lost on the smaller screen, especially the amazing sound FX. Being lucky enough to have a home cinema, the bottom end on my 7.2.1 surround will go down to 16hz and the top end to 34,000 hz. That horn shakes the entire room and makes hairs stand on end, whilst the Heat Ray sounds like it's passing millions of volts over the top of your head. It truly is an amazing scene.

Just installed a DolbyAtmos system at my house with Martin Logan speakers, this movie sounds amazing. That horn gives me chills every time, and shakes the shit out of my house lol. Love this movie

Love Morgan's dulcet tones, but nothing (in my book) can beat the Richard Burton version (though you can keep the vast majority of the kitsch,.late-70s Disco!)

I will say this, I have read the book by HG Wells. He wrote it in such a way you could feel the fear... After ending it I thought I can understand how it would make a good film. No matter what anyone says negatively about this film it captured that fear I read in the book. It is the only piece of media that has.Yes the Orson Welles Radio show played on peoples fear at the time and stands as an interesting take given some gravitas by Welles. The George Pal War of the Worlds film was great for its time, but I had no fear watching it. The US Tv show was entertaining, but again, lack of fear. In the UK we had the BBC effort of an adaption which was set in the same time period as the book but it was excruciating to watch and was a massive fail . But Spielberg got it, he literally caught the lightning in a bottle with his adaption. I felt the fear that built up from the opening scenes, Like the other characters, Tim Robbins character was changed from the book, BUT he captured the essence of the books Artilleryman and Clergyman rolled into one. I felt the horror and fear from everything from the sound design to the protagonists watching on as the War Machines harvested the humans and sprayed the mist. I think this film was underrated on its release. Great stuff.

Recently they figured out that it was just the newspapers after the event of the radio show that made up the story of mass hysteria. Apparently the reaction was miniscule, if there at all, in terms of documented evidence outside of the media.

People always think they would react appropriately to unprecedented circumstances but experiments have shown that In groups people are far worse at discerning danger than when they are alone. If nobody else runs people think its safe not to run. When one person shows enough fear to run everyone will follow suit even people completely unaware of what they are running from will run too. Anyways great video and one of my favorite movies.
Precisely. This is called "pluralistic ignorance" and it's one of the most fascinating things I learned from a great book called "Influence: Science and Pratice" by Robert Cialdini. Revolutionary book if you are into human behavior. 👍
John Williams has always composed amazing numbers. When both he and Elfman are gone, I don’t know what Hollywood will do.

We got Bear McCreary! He did a few sounds, but his God of War music is amazing and his music for Outlander show is beautifull. If filmmakers give him a good chance to create something, he will do it!
Also love his terrifying opening for the Walking Dead. Chills!

@@plastique45 While your word is true, Hollywood is simpleminded and believe that anything John William does, gets audience. Once he dies, Hollywood will cry on their bed, thinking "How will we earn good money!" instead of looking for new and anti-woke talent!

Rewatched the movie just a week ago. In anticipation of a new survival game in development, yes, War of the Worlds. Many previews can be seen here on RUclips. They have done an incredible job of duplicating the tripods, their weapons and effects. Oh btw, the billowing horn is also heard quite often.

at 11:09 the ferry scene, ive only just realised that its a uberpod, a tripod but bigger and better and is mostly defined by the fact it has 5 spotlights instead of 3

I honestly didn't care for this adaptation. Being a HUGE fan of the original 1938 broadcast (I even listen to it every year with my kids on my 1937 Philco radio after carving Halloween pumpkins. It's a family tradition), I saw this as a huge missed opportunity to have the film take place concurrently with the broadcast, spattering bits of the "news" segments throughout, overheard from radios and/or right there with where the action where parts of the radio drama were taking place.
Just to add though, Morgan Freeman is really the only voice in modern entertainment that's ANYTHING close to Orson Welles's voice, so I for one did appreciate his voiceover in the prologue.
Must be hard to find parts for your 1937 Philco. That's quite the gem!

As it happens, I haven’t seen this film yet. Aways arrayed away from it because I want to do the Orson Welles thing first. Like Rocky (never watched either), this looks like something that has unexpected depth.

Independence day will always be my favorite Alien invasion. It had a little too much goofiness and dumb jokes considering what was happening but then i read the book and it was much , much darker and was fkin amazing.
8:35. Yeah. I get what you're saying. The thing is that though, humans have a fight, flight or freeze response. It's obvious that no one should be standing there, but from their perspective, it does come to them. They're stuck, frozen by the confusion of what's going on, or at least most of them. After the horn blares, at 10:40, you can see some individuals run away. But either way, their minds are captivated. Humans, naturally aren't entirely logical basically, and this scene illustrates that by their lack of acknowledgement to the danger present.

Enjoying the channel so far, very entertaining. I would be remiss if I didn't give you some level of guff for praising Tom Cruise emoting fear via hyperventilating... is this some meta humor or a genuine moment of having ones cake and eating it too?
Good point! You saw my other video I take it on the overuse of hyperventilating! 👍
I'm not saying all hyperventilation is bad. In some contexts, it can work very well. My issue is when the actor uses it as a default for many different emotions that deserve more nuance. When it's overused or the only device one relies upon in their acting, it becomes stilted and flat.
In the tripod scene, however, he's absolutely terrified, has a reason to be, and sells the emotion with his expression. Hyperventilating in this context seems to enhance his fear, not cheapen it, I'd argue!
In case you wanted some contrast, Cruise does a marvelous job of emoting fear in Eyes Wide Shut (a sample of it in the Star Wars video) without the asthma attack acrobatics! 😄

@@notallthatbad I’ve actually been on board with Cruise as an actor during that era where he made some interesting choices: Eyes wide shut, Vanilla Sky and Magnolia… unfortunately he has since gone back to making more conventional choices in his work, but it was enough to reveal he was more then a box office giant or leading man.
I think I'm misreading what you wrote. Do you mean you were on a board, or on board (aligned with) Cruise for those movies?
Those were some pretty "out there" films. Will have to revisit them.
@@notallthatbad typos. Yeah back in the late 90’s Cruise (not to dissimilar to when Robin Williams did One hour photo, Death to smootchie and Insomnia) went out of his way to reinvent what critics and audiences thought of his range as an actor.
All fantastic showcases of Cruise’s range as a performer. He was always solid, but he went out on a limb to choose some less obvious “hey I’m the protagonist” roles.
That sound was acorsd the globe a few years back and no one knew where it came from. I heard it too it was from the sky but like out of soace.

When I watched this movie, I had trouble sleeping for a week... 😅
At the same time, I cound't avoid association these tripods with the ones from the game Half Life 2 (those were probably inspired by the original War of the Worlds itself.).

It's a movie of two halves for me. I loved the sci-fi /horror elements. I hated the family dynamic elements.

Yeah, that seems to be a bone of contention and controversy in the writing. Strange how they studied earth for so long but didn't pick up on the microorganisms which would be their undoing.

I think that the whole missing the microorganisms thing was just driving home the point about hubris being a fatal weakness of any advanced
civilization.
It was human hubris,that assumed humanity was alone in the universe.And after the war began, it was human hubris,that human weaponry
military skills,and raw courage,would win the day. It was also hubris of the aliens/Martians, for focusing so much on neutralizing the human
threat, and exploiting their victory,that they didn't give equal focus to the rest of the planetary biosphere.
For all we know, the aliens/Martians did do some research into microorganisms. You would think if their plan was to use the human population as "cattle" and "fertilizer" they would do studies on the microorganisms in our bloodstreams,and intestinal tracts.
But every now and then, we have outbreaks of new pathogens that even our Earth adapted immune systems can;t handle.
And it's possible that the Martians biological studies were made thousands of years ago when they stashed their tripods on Earth.
My biggest question would be.If the tripods were stashed on Earth hundreds or thousands of years ago. Why wouldn't the aliens
have just taken over the planet in an age before Earth had a post industrial information based global civilization?
Even if Atomic weapons couldn't bypass their shields. They would kill the very humans they hope to harvest,and likely kill the "Red Weed"
crops they were trying to grow. A desperate humanity that came to realize the true scope of the aliens plans may have just decided to
go down fighting versus being "farmed"
The story and the movie are great; it's just that I can't stand Tom Cruise because he is a horrible person.
He certainly is a colorful character!
Easily one of the weaker Spielberg blockbusters, the other one being "The BFG". I am not sure how you interpreted a really unimaginative, by the numbers reveal of the tripods to be a "terrifying emergence".
Because different people have different opinions? 🤷♂️
