I'm American and have been to the Philippines several times and absolutely love it! The reason they are Latino, is they were under the rule of Spain and Portugal for over 400 years. They are also heavily devout Catholics, and family oriented.. if you get the chance, GO!

Great reaction and thanks for sharing. You need to watch all the Jo Koy specials. Phillipinos are Latinos, the Phillipines Islands were colonized by Spain for hundreds of years. When the Spanish lost the Spanish American war, the Phillipines became a US Territory and almost a bunch of new states. But the US gave the Phillipines their independence instead. Puerto Rico could be a state or independent if the PR would vote that way. I know I grew up in the PR near Mayaguez in the 60's. So the Phillipinos are Latinos. :)

You are 100% correct. I misspoke. I was more referring to both European countries having influence over both Asia and Latin America. The Portuguese were in Macao and areas like Brazil while the Spanish were in other Asian countries, as well as Latin America. I over generalized. My bad.

Similarities with Latin America was due to Philippines being governed from Mexico under the Viceroyalty of New Spain from 1565 to 1821. After Mexico’s independence, the Philippines was then directly governed by Spain until Spanish rule ended in 1898.

I think the Vick's Vapor Rub was a generational thing because I'm white and my mom did the EXACT same thing to me. I used to "love" when she's put several spoonfuls of Vick's in a pan with water, heat it on the stove and then have me sit on the kitchen table with a towel over my head and over the pan to clear out my sinus'.

as a filipino asian american, i am glad you can relate. in very general terms we are sometimes called the black sheep ofthe asians or latinos/black people of the asians due to our skin color, and as many other comments spain ruled based on many sources 300-500+ years in the philippines; so we have a bit/ a lot of cultural history with latin/latino people!!!
It makes sense, because the Philippines were conquered by Spain for something like 300 years if memory serves.

The Philippines and Mexico have a trading route..... there's even a celebration in Mexico with a monument to commemorate this history. I'm Filipino(Ilokano) and one time I was cutting the grass in my front yard and my neighbor came over and started speaking to me in spanish....then apologized because he thought I was mexican.

He was talking about the galleon ship that goes back and forth crossing the Pacific Ocean and Atlantic going to Acapulco Mexico and Colima during Spanish colonial in both countries, that is where the pilipino traders/sailors stayed and married Mexican women
@motivationontop6587 Yup, I get that a lot too. Especially Filipinos from the Visayas. That trade route was called THE MANILA GALLEON TRADE. I just learned that when the Mexicans and Filipinos were going vice versa from Manila to Acapulco, the languages and the cultures we're going vice versa too. That's why some of the words in Tagalog not only have some Spanish but also some vocabulary from the Aztecs.

Of course Philippinos are Latinos - after Spanish-American War it wasn't just Puerto Rico that Spain had to give up to America. There's plethora of Pacific territories that went to America too, including Philippines 😉

As a rural white kid, our medicine cabinet was just Vicks, Mercurochrome and Robitussin. Maybe some Tylenol for headaches/fevers, but that was it until my late teenage years. Somehow four perfectly healthy kids survived on a farm with that.

Rice and frijoles si latino but filipinos don't eat rice with frijoles. Frijoles(beans) were prepared as sweetened beans and normally used in preparing halo-halo.

55 year old. When I was a kid, mom always had the Vicks. I think when you grow up in a house with out a lot of money, your parents do what they can afford.
My mom was black and my pops was white. I can say that both sides of the family used Vicks to cure everything. I remember one of my cousins had gotten lice and my auntie loaded her hair up with Vicks "to suffocate them!" She smelled like Vicks for 2 weeks!

He ended up getting his head cut off by a Filipino Warrior, Lapu-Lapu. Magellan and the Spanish expedition are the reason why many Filipinos are light skinned and our languages are very similar. In turn, the food and the culture are very similar. A lot of people call the Philippines and the Filipinos, the "Latinos of Asia".

The Philippines was under Spain and ruled it for 300 years. Mexico and the Philippines did trade since the 15 hundreds. Filipinos' last names are Latino last names. They are called Hispanics of Asia. Some of the words being used in the Philippines are Spanish and Nawat derived, which is Aztecan dialect.

Around 50-80% of Filipinos have Spanish last names as far as I know. One of the good things that resulted from Spain colonizing Philippines for a very long time is that we were introduced to Christianity, and I'm proud to say that Philippines is the only Christian Country in Asia. No same-sex marriage, no abortion, marijuana is still illegal, no divorce. God Bless us all...
