I worked Derrick's for years... it was a great up body workout... except for jerking hard on the latch to open the elevators when cooking out of the hole... Pulling back 5 inch pipe on a big rig and drilling deep... 15,000 plus feet was a real test on a cold day when the wind was blowing 30 to 40 mph. Example... Table Rock... southern Wyoming... south of interstate 80 between Rick Spribgs and Rawlins... it's where the jet stream touches the ground in the winter time!
Thanks for the respect Rodney! My biggest near miss happened one night while going in the whole. Every thing was fine except I had to take a pass. So... after I latched one up I grabbed another stand out the the diving board and tied it off so I could let go of it and drop my belt. Its only about a minute between stands so I was running out of time while the blocks were coming back up. In my haste I forgot to put my belt back on. As I went to latch that stand I couldn't generate enough muscle to latch it up. Having the belt on gives you more leverage to close the elevators. Now... I missed it and I am over center and can't stand on the board. The stand is falling out if the elevators and I have nothing to grab. So... only one place to go... I jump to the stand as it falls across the Derrick and hits the windfall on the far side of the Derrick. I immediately slide down far enough to stand on a beam and then walk over and climb out to the ladder. I never even had a chance to get scared it happened so fast. Meanwhile... the driller is looking up there and wondering what the hell I am doing... yeah... no shit.. what was I thinking? 😆 Anyway.. we smoked to much weed back then... might have had something to do with my absent-minded mistake.... For the next several months I was always checking my belt... that experience creeped me out... that was close.... 2 and a half seconds later I would ha e been dead if I had fallen 85 feet.
Did this back in 75 76 on the ocean rover in the North Sea drilling for Phillips petroleum 66 , roughnecked mostly but went up to let the Derrickman have his breaks , it was a good change , Old oil rig joke , Why did the hippies back in the sixties go to the drilling rigs for a job ….they heard that joints came in 45 ft lengths , dope came in five gallon drums and did nothing but make trips all day 😊
You need balls and heart if you ain’t got them stay your ass at the house I’ve done just about every job in construction and it’s a office job compared to being on a rig hardest god damn work there is and I loved every second it brother and I miss it more and more everyday
Hey , I worked Patterson rig 11 west TX for a year and a half or so , 17" surface drill collar, bit was 24" never seen a piece of Steel that big , they said 1100 lbs a foot ,drilled 30' in a matter of minutes then we laid it down , 19,000 ft deep hole , late 80's wonderful experience ,seen some messed up shit out there , seen a rig a few locations over had a blow out and spit 2000 ft of pipe and collars out of the hole , rig melted in 3 hours . but you need to wear young mans clothes to do that unless you are the driller.
the only reason i went up the derrick to relieve someone was because i hated the assistant driller and would not back down. i was terrified of heights 😁guess who got promoted lol. got used to it after a while. did it for two and half years, left to go coring. came back a year later and went back up the derrick. was worse than the first time hahaha
that would be the case if it had any kind of a lean on it, that pipe is damn near falling toward him to start with...Just calling it the way I see it. BROTHERS!!!!
Is this the top of the part that is always collapsing and killing people in accident videos? I've never seen it from this angle. It looks a lot more secure than I expected.
We only had 1 monkey tail when I busted out on the board. And the elevators were just that. Hurry and change clothes to show your relief drill that you can get it. If the next hand twist’s ... guess what . Promotion! As for derrick’s(tripping pipe ) this was the easiest part of the job. Hurry and change out a liner on #1 while we’re in the doghouse eating . Don’t get me wrong, worm and motors will also get dirty. Always get the wrong tools anyway. And it’s usually a bit trip so let’s change oil while we’re not in the hole. Safe but I always thought doing a PM should be done on rig moves. I only had 1 drill ask me ( not order ) to grease the crown . Big wigs on location.
This would have been a good video if it wouldn’t have been in slow motion. Let it play, don’t slow it down. That way we can see the real reaction time; but, wait it was my bad. Lol
Work derricks for my years back in the 90's and 2000's now my shoulders are killing me oh by the way always work on free swing block except for a few Wells 💪🏼💪🏼 lost my leg when I stepped in the 🐁 mousehole and it wouldn't come out 😭 tooly called a welder and the welder cut my leg off 6" below the knee 😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳😳
Word is, they are still tripping out of this hole today

I did this for a good year with Patterson Drilling! Trust me when I say you gotta have balls to do this line of work!

I worked for Patterson-Uti.
Pulling out with a rope…nice. I worked a triple and they used to make us use a winch to pull out.
Wrong hand to unlatch, plus your arms will tire soon. Use your back hand closer to the pipe bro. This will wobble it to you.

You're right but he puts a jack in it anyways so surely he won't tired
