This 1958 film "Okefenokee Interlude" is an advertisement for the new Ford Edsel and it takes the form of a travelogue as it follows an Edsel owner on his vacation to the Okefenokee Swamp in Georgia. The owner is a physician who is worn out and exhausted from his work and he is in need of a relaxing getaway. He and his wife drive the Edsel to Okefenokee Swamp Park, which feeds the Suwannee River. A local boatman helps the doctor and his wife navigate the swamp. They witness stunning wildlife including an alligator and are treated to an incredible landscape that features unique trees and plants. Then, the pair enjoy dinner with the boatman's family and sing tunes before returning home. The advertisement concludes with the doctor driving away in his Edsel, exclaiming: "Just what the doctor ordered, and I feel great!" The film was produced by the Photographic Department of Ford Motor Company and is narrated by John E. McCarthy.
Ford launched the Edsel brand and division, named after the founder's son Edsel, in 1958 and invested heavily in the new product's marketing and advertising. Despite these efforts, the Edsel was not a success and its launch is considered by some to be one of the most famous failures in industry history. Several factors are blamed for this flop, including a controversial style design, manufacturing issues, and its price during an economic downturn. Ford's marketing created high expectations that the product did not live up to.
This film showcases some of the tactics used in marketing the Edsel. First off, Ford produced many films that were distributed to audiences including travel documentaries such as this one and another travel advertisement "West to the Tetons" that follows a couple on their honeymoon journey to the mountains in Wyoming. Both market the Edsel as key to freedom and adventure.

Look at the world today... I'm 66 and was born in 1958 and I can remember when it was like this in the 1960's, riding my bike down to the Ada Drug store to buy a Matchbox Car for .50, a coke for .15 and a Mounds Bar for .10. I made $2.00 a week doing chores on our farm beginning in 1968. (10) By 1970 (12) I was making in the beginning 2.5 cent a bale of hay and then the grand total of .05/bale of hay to load it on the trailer off the field and put it in the barn via conveyor, we usually did it with three kids. Everybody learned how to drive as soon as, "Your feet can reach the pedals" and we did! I was 9 when that happened. A 1964 Red Ford 3/4 ton 6 cyc Pickup with a 4 speed and gear1 was GRANNY gear. Dad had me get in the seat and he showed me how to push the clutch in and put it in gear by pushing the shifter up to the top left for granny gear. Then he got in the back of the truck with hay in it and said, "let the clutch out slowly" and I did and away we went at a slow crawl. It was winter and as Dad threw the hay off one bale every so often our cattle walked along and fed on it. We had a big herd back then too. 125 at one time. I have 26 here now.

In addition to the financial losses caused by the Edsel, Ford Motor Company also lost vast sums of money on the 1958-1960 Lincoln/Continental and 1956/1957 Continental Mark II. Sales of the 1957-1960 Mercury also declined from earlier years. However, the 1957-1959 Ford was popular with around 4 million sales. Also, the 1958-1960 Thunderbird sold well enough to keep the company from bankruptcy. The mistake was that Ford should have introduced the compact Falcon earlier than 1960 as smaller cars were increasingly more popular in the late 1950s.

If I was taking a trip down South I wouldn't do it in a suit, and I'd order my Edsel with air conditioning.

These days you can fly to Florida from the Northeast cheaper than driving down, you'd be rocking the rental which will almost certainly be a Nissan Sentra.

I`d rather drive an Edsel than any of the new ugly cars of today. Lots of room fairly easy to work on all except the front hinged hood which for me would have been a pain for me to reach into. Nice looking colors too. The style sort of grows on you. Prefer the Edsel`s styling over the scowling cars of today or the huge pickups that look like there going to have you for a meal.

It's a shame that Ford wouldn't pay to film this in color. It would have made it 100% better.

The intro makes me wonder what kind of a deal the second owners got. Most of them probably got their Edsel for less than a same year-mileage-condition Ford would've cost them.

This is whats wrong with a lot of people today, they're too far removed from their Zen spot out in Mother Earth. One must find that spot where you're close to Mother Earth. Because when a man or woman is close to Mother Earth they're close to God.
