He's clearly a reasonably good drummer (I've been playing ~20 years, myself) and I'll just say that the nature of the inputs kinda just lends itself to transitioning into an actual fill just to, like, fix it in your brain. It sounds and feels _wrong_ to just stop playing without doing a quick lil fill.
Hey there, I was One of the commentators of this run. We didn't get a chance to say this at the end, But if anyone wants to learn how to do alternative controller methods, please feel free to reach out. It would be awesome to see more content like this at GDQs in the future and myself @czr_drums and many others are really wanting to see more competition in the alternative controller space. Just look us up by our names in the video and you should be able to find us. Thank you to GDQ for having us and CZR for letting me run commentary.
What did something like this cost to set up? Obviously it's an electronic drum kit but then presumably you'd need some bizarre converter to make it plug into an N64. This seems exceptionally inaccessible to most people tbh
This specific comment reminds me of the time I tried beating Sonic Adventure 2 with just Wii Remote motion controls and nothing else (every single button assigned to the Wii Remote motion controls no exception) but due to technical limitations with the software I was using it was completely impossible to get past a specific level... (this limitation being I couldn't get the Nunchuck to work for some reason so I had to do it all with just a single Wii Remote. I got further than I expected) Maybe if the software limitation can be bypassed I'd love to try again (although I don't stream anymore for now so it's not a priority)
@@charliekelly735 CZR has a full how-to on his channel. I tried it immediately after I saw this amazing run and was shocked learning how easy it was to set up. This is some of the most fun I've had watching a speedrun, the fact that the controls are usable enough for decently fine-grained control of the game plus the runner actually being a decent drummer makes every moment have such satisfying sounds accompanying it
CZR is a legend, incredible run! Also, shout out to production, that audio mix was perfect! The drums stood out, but didn't drown out the commentators at all.
This run completely ensnared me from start to finish. I've watched Mario 64 runs so many times it's drummed into my head, but this one beat them all. It just makes the normal, N64 controller based runs seem so cymbal!
I really love that the spinning and throwing creates sounds that put more emphasis on the move itself. Now I want a mod that creates these sounds during all other playthroughs 😅
CZR is keeping the SM64 scene alive with these drum runs - just goes to show how versatile the soeedrunning community is when you can use every element of an instrument to complete a videogame with - what a legend! ❤️

I'm half-asleep rn and for sec I thought the thumbnail photoshopped Bowser to be standing alongside the guys, like he's there helping commentate the run and cheer the dude on
This was such a good run. If people are unaware, CZR and Bubzia, the blindfolded speedrunner, had a best of three 16 star race recently. It’s a good watch!
Omg, those hard and precise moves like getting the start from inside the wall on level two, which is hard to do even with regular controllers, he's getting on first try with a goddamn drum! This is beyond epic
Request for next year: Super Mario Wonder 4-player co-op Band% Using the same interface for midi-to-controller, 4 different players on different instruments
What an absolutely fun run for the marathon, since everything about it is a spectacle. Even the technology behind it is cool, transferring midi to input? I'll never see bowser being twirled the same again and that has already been memed to death for a long time now. Edit: The end credits song is silenced? Really!? The fact that this run exists implies that somebody can write a piece of sheet music that completes Super Mario 64.

CZR:
That's not a Rockband controller drumset, that's an honest to goodness real-ass drumset. Programmers are wild and this speedrun is fantastic.
Importantly, it is an electronic kit that works by sending digital signals. They aren't just strapping mics to random floor toms and calling it a day.

the build up before cannonless is amazing
