  • Protecting young fruit trees against animals or trimming accidents is essential but which models should we use in each case? Some protections can even cause several problems to our young trees. In this video, I show a couple of models I use going through their Pros and Cons and the most common issues that they might cause.

      We use chicken wire in the planting hole against voles (field mice) or rats. And also a fencing cordoned around the property against wild deers and rabbits. Tried using those guards, too problematic. Btw, do you have a plant nursery and do you sell bareroot plants and cuttings? Have been trying a way to get in touch with you.

      The best guard for rabbits & mice is 1/4"-3/8" hardware cloth cut to the size you like & held together with wire ties. I think you will find this works excellent & lasts many years.

    We often have roe deer and hares in the garden which means that small trees left unprotected are soon eaten. I place a cheap wire / mesh type compost bin around each tree. This protects both the stem and the canopy. Anchoring the bin with a couple of pins in the ground will prevent strong winds from moving it.

      Thanks for the comment and suggestions, Henrik. I fortunately don't have deer problems over here, but the rabbits are a real nuisance. They even chew the bark of older trees and I sometimes have to use the bridge graft to save them. I might do a video about that technique soon.

    I protect my trees from sheep and rabbits by putting quite rigid galvanized mesh (2.80 euro piece) used for making beton floors 2x1m around , for half or full stems I use 2 old and cheap (0.60 a piece) vineyard metal poles to attach the mesh, for fruit low stem or bushes I use 4 poles and 2x mesh mats, against mice which on my farm only like apple bark I use the plastic mesh sleeves but roll them around and fix them with hollow plastic twine, easier to put on and gives more resistance . I put the strong mesh about 10 to 15 cm above ground so sheep can clear the edge below, in the inside I put hay or straw mulch.

      Thanks for the comment and all the tips, Mimi. I really only have problems with rabbits were I live and they like apples and pears the most but they also chew some of the other fruit trees. Sometimes sheep made their way to my orchard, but with a strong fence that doesn't happen anymore. Now I just have to figure out a way to convince the birds to stop pecking all my fruits (the fake hawks I improvise do work, but they have a limited range).

    Are mantises a threat to fruit trees in their early stages? That formation removed from a tree at the ~2:30 mark looked like a mantis ootheca (egg bundle). I guess they might eat pollenators as much as pest insects.

    I have a small area by my house that I would like to plant about four or five fruit trees what season is the best to plant a young tree I have several other questions also if you have a few moments

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  3 года назад +1

      Hi. In my zone (9a) we usually buy bare root trees (with no soil) so we plant them as soon as we get them, usually in early spring. This way the trees don't have to adapt to a pot and don't have to endure their first winter as soon as they are planted. If the trees are potted and a bit older (2-3 year) they are usually potted in the autumn. Nevertheless, robust, potted plants can be planted year round, provided they have adequate follow up and care.

    Always appreciate your videos. Question: Do you use a Bordeaux mix to paint your trunks, or as a winter spray? If so, how when and where?

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  3 года назад +1

      Hi. Thanks for the comment. I do use a Bordeaux mix spray at least once in the winter (usually mid-winter) to kill most fungus spores. The concentration is the recommended in the package and I try to cover the main trunk and most tree branches. I live in a very humid area and if I don't spray in the winter the fungus problems will be very intense the following year. Sometimes I spray a second time, a few weeks before the winter ends. I will probably have to do it this year as the winter has been extremely rainy until now.

    Hello Jaime, sorry this is off topic. I found out that you grew the fig cotio verdeal based on your old posts on the fig forum. Do you know if it's a common variety or needs the wasp? A lot of people don't seem to know. Thanks.

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  3 года назад

      Hi. Côtio-Verdeal is a Common variety, it doesn't need the wasp (I am sure as I don't have the wasp were I live). Côtio was a popular average size Common white fig variety in Algarve, as it dries in the branch until its picked (the most popular fig for drying in that region at the time). Most farmers would force pollination for better yields and bigger and better flavored figs. Côteo-Verdeal is a bigger fig that, according to sources, doesn't accept pollination very well. Verdeal is a name that is sometimes used, in Algarve, as synonym to Côteo-Verdeal. Nevertheless, there is a Verdeal fig, also in Algarve, that is a Smyrna type (quite rare to find now) that needs caprification and, in the north of the country, there is also a fig called Verdeal that is a Common fig. So lots of confusion may occur with these varieties, but you can be sure Côtio-Verdeal doesn't need the wasp.

    Hello, I have a question not related to the video:
    I have a 30+ year tall cherry tree and I wish to really heavy prune it. When should I do I ? Also, I wish to use the bark grafting technique that you showed in several videos. Could it also be done for example now, in January or should both the pruning and the grafting be done in February or March? Could I graft peach on this old cherry tree?
    Thank you for the quality videos !

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  3 года назад +1

      Hi. If I were you I would avoid pruning your cherry tree now and would wait until late winter. Otherwise the tree might develop problems, like infections in the cuts, particularly if you live in a humid area. Just before the tree starts to break dormancy you can cut it (always leaving at least one nurse branch to help maintaining the tree alive) and graft it. Beware that trees that old might not take grafts very well in the main trunk. If the bark grafts fail, you can always let the nurse branch grow and graft it at a later date (using other techniques). Also, some peach varieties might be incompatible with cherries, but you can always try. Good luck with your grafts.

    • @JSacadura
      @JSacadura  3 года назад +1

      It really depends on the age of the trees and the lowest temperatures that you have in the winter in your area. Most apple trees will have no problem resisting the winter, particularly if they are robust and 2-3 years old. If you are concerned, you can protect them by mulching to ensure the roots are insulated against the cold (don't accumulate the mulch against the trunk or it may rot if the weather is too humid).
