It's a bold claim to make, but Roman goes there in this full drive review - is the latest Porsche 718 Boxster actually better than a 911? In this video, he drives four different versions of the brand's mid-engined roadster to see if you can really make that case.

T stands for Touring, not Turbo. The 718 and 718S are also turbos. The 718T is a Touring version of the the base 718 (same 2.0 liter turbo engine) that includes performance options and 20” wheels as a standard package.

I get the reason for the manual, it's a small roadster and having a manual really fits this car and what it's aiming to do. However, I'd have to say that I'm getting really used to good automatics, and of course the PDK is the best you can get. The snappiness of going through the gears with the PDK feels really good for me. I've had several sticks before but a good DCT also feels quite involved as well. When your focus shifts away from having to clutch and shift, you start to focus on other things as well, so I don't really feel LESS driver involvement. Again, I just really like the snappiness of the shifts; it's something a manual just can't give you. Also the sound of downshifting rapidly is fun as well.

Nice review. I bought a 1st gen 1999 986 Arctic Silver/Boxster Red Leather Boxster, 5 speed in November of 1998. Still have it with 102,000 miles and counting. It was and is a blast to drive. Only 200 hp but you can stretch out a bit on the streets and fully enjoy all its attributes. I have since added a 2017 718 Cayman S PDK. It certainly is on a different performance level and fun to drive but a bit more of a challenge to use it all on the streets. Well, you can't actually. But someday, if I can bring myself to part with that 986, the new Boxsters are fine with me. Best looking convertible out there IMHO.

Roman, the 986 Boxster was launched in 1996, 1 year BEFORE the 996 911. Porsche built the Boxster to plug the gap left by the 968/944. It was designed from the outset to share as many parts as possible with the 993 replacement, the 996, thus cutting production costs.

Only 1% of cars sold today are convertible. I prefer the 2016 Boxster S with the 6 cylinder with low mileage. I love this car; my friend Paul Deutschman of Deutschman Design designed the original Boxster and it was called the Spexter and he's been recently commissioned by Porsche to update the original Spexter for it's anniversary. Many people believe the Boxster and Cayman are the best handling of the Porsche. The T actually doesn't stand for Turbo, but for Touring edition. They are beautiful cars and you can find many used ones in great condition and low mileage in Florida. For a new one, you'd have a hard time choosing vs a Corvette Stingray or the new Z06 with the new V8!

This car is not attainable as most dealers don’t have allocations for the GTS , Spyder, or even the GTS. In addition, they are all well over $100k. The fun factor of a roadster is clear but it is not found only in a Porsche Boxster! As a previous Boxster owner I can testify that a Miata is more fun and less stress. Less stress because it’s so damn affordable to live with. More fun due to its much lighter and more nimble feel. Power lacking? Not really unless you want tomboy speeding tickets. The lightness and feel of the Miata is all you need. Porsche Boxster are truly great but they cost too much money for 99% of the drivers out there.

I just hope enough of these 718's (in Cayman form) are sold in the next couple years (before all of VAG goes electric..including Porsche and Lambo) I will have some good used options at decent prices in 5-6 years. The miata is fantastic, but at 6'2" I simply dont fit, the new GR Toyota 86 and BRZ are great...but the Cayman is the perfect sports car imo. Smooth flat 6 growling from where the backseat normally is, perfect shifter clutch, precise steering, excellent ergonomics (for a small sports car, cupholders are chintzy though) and reliability. It doesnt get any better than this. Even though these things quickly approach base 911 money with a few options added, the 911 is going to be crazy expensive equally equipped...and I'm not sure the driving enjoyment between the two would be worth the extra cost. Cayman GTS for me all day every day..

Geez, it would be nice if you could actually get a Boxster GTS. Rumor has it, they will not be producing them again until very late 2022, maybe 2023. With my allocation deposit paid, my dealer is saying a 718T allocation will be coming through the door any day now, but he's no idea when a GTS allocation will be available. It's kinda killing me that I'm finally in a position to afford one of these magic machines, but can't find an allocation! ... so, now considering the T. Hum...

My consistent strategy, in either of our upgraded convertibles (MX-5, Cabriolet), was to avoid the freeways. Became a student of the surface streets and country highways, and never tired chasing routes from the canyons up to Big Sur, frequent adventures upstate and through the Sierra and southern Cascades up north. I will always appreciate having the western half of North America (Canada too!) as my playground for the first forty years. Thankfully, today's equivalent is an R-Line Touareg and the field & forest tracks of western Europe... =)
