That concept boat at 1:14 is a design that I commissioned from a Naval Architect. It was a surprise to see it had spread to RUclips. It is based on a hull form design from Bateau Boat Plans, the 28 ft houseboat.
I would like to let you know that I like your post. I have been working on building a boat/camper. Thanks for the information you have provided in your post, the website. I have a unique design for a boat camper. My design is approximately 30 feet long with a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom and can accommodate 6 people. Most important is that it will have all the comfort of a regular house. Totally Off Grid Boat House
Love the project idea. I have kicked it around also, but have never went beyond the thinking process. Really liked the box van camper build, and am gonna follow this.
Just a couple of idea's to consider in your design. Assuming the useable section of the hull is about 16' long. Drop the living area about 10' as low as you can into the hull; so you can see over the house with your driving station; on the starboard side of the rear deck ( say about 5'x7' wide). This will give you fuel and other stowage under the rear deck at the transom, on either side of the outboard well, with just enough room foreword for a double berth below deck. The aft deck could be raised about 2' above the existing deck to give you the 4' min. of headroom and raise you for a good sightline forward over the house from the outside control station ( cut away to fit over the house). The aft deck could have storage bench seating ( re work the existing seats? ) and a removable fabric enclosure for sun and rain protection (if you got the hoops a good start). Plus a wood framed safety glass wind shield with wipers. Water tanks and any holding tanks could be under the fore deck to maintain trim. ( a consideration in the placement of all weight on a boat). All companionways (stairs) doors and passages should be a minimum of 22" wide. I would place a door on the center line fore and aft in the living area over structural water tight bulkheads. Sliding hatches on the roof provide the headroom over the companionways. Just a few idea's from the old guy. 57 year's on the water and for the last 17 the servant of a 50' wooden power boat. Bert
Hey JYDOG, just came across your video...yes you got the last name right! Thanks for the reference to my web site! I was tempted to take an existing hull when I first wanted a houseboat as well so I think you've got a good plan! Yes it's lots of work but I just kept working when I could and we are now on our 6th season coming up on the water. You'll get there! I'll check in from time to time as I like these type of projects (obviously). Good luck and have a great New Year! Best/Roy
Ive been really thinking hard about shanty house boat i appreciate your video it gives me hope I'm on fixed income and going to try this ty for the inspiration just subscribed to your channel ty again brother
I expect forward to see the construction of yours. I've got same idea, but a little bit crazier, a trailerable boat. I'll send you the project when it's done. Good luck.
Just found this and wanted to say thanks for sharing, always looking for more ideas. I've been thinking about the same idea for a few years but haven't managed to get everything lined up to start yet. Good luck with the build !
Congratulations I can't wait to follow you on this new build adventure!! It's exciting watching you build out the box truck camper and now a boat 🚣🏽 camper you are going to be mega busy with work family and two projects!!! So I will be continuing watching you build it and not buy it!!!! 😀
Build your own out of wood. Make the sacrifice, and get the permit. Just use good constuction materials. You can get a book anout boat building. That way you have 0 labor cost. Just a thought. Love the idea. Been thinking of this myself.
Good idea i don't know if this would help. But I would get a cabover camper. Like from a pick up truck. And i would attach the camper to your boat. Then take your boat controls and attach them under the cabover part of the camper and you could enclose the controls around the camper.that would be the cheap way to go i think. Good video
Hmmm, let me stew on that a bit. Never crossed my mind but a great idea to get up and going quick. Thanks I will consider it. Wish I could find an all aluminum one.
Building is a learning project. Finally, I find someone on the same page. Gonna do the GrandTour? Lawson di Ransom Canyon. PS... Width on the water is not a liability and am considering Push outs on the upper.
Another project! And I lam looking forward to this one...we have a pontoon boat that is rarely used any more and I'm looking for a tiny house! Since, geogtaphically we are not far away, keep notes, I may just want to be a customer!
On Roy's website he has a picture of a boat that used his plans for the cabin but it was built on a metal hull it looked pretty good. Looking forward to how your boat turns out
Can't wait to see the progress. Still moving along with the build of my camp-bulance. After getting the necessities put in (sink, stove, bed, fridge) I'm carefully weighing each option as I build. Being a working father, I only get a couple hours a weekend to put into it. But incremental progress is still progress.
Great project! There is no keel right? Until now there were only seats&benches on the deck,it was stable by now, if you fit a whole cabin on that deck won`t the boat become kind of tippy? The hull seems to be somewhat low... Did i understand that right, that you will pull that trailer with the box camper? Nice idea, camping on land& water! Will be an awesome build, thanks in advance! :-D
Omg...you think just like myself and my husband. We are new to boats and simply want to try to make a tiny house into a boat....I feel like we need a contractor to make sure it's safe to live on. How was your experience
Most people want a house boat or an RV but you will combine them together so you could spend the night in the middle of a lake or a Walmart parking lot. I can't wait to see how you build this thing and take it for a cruise! #JYDOG #LandYacht
I did boat repair for a living for seven years and lived on my boat for 10. Get rid of ALL the old plywood. If it isn't bad now it will be bad in the future. Start with a clean slate!. Use Marine products in your build. A bit more expensive but worth it in the long run. Fiberglass over plywood is a disaster. If you use FG cloth use a two part epoxy to bond it to wood. I spent more time repairing FG on wood because the polyester resin wouldn't bond with wood and the mix would build up moisture between the two and rot the wood. Should be an interesting build.
Ok, Plywood gone! It was bad.I've got to keep this thing light too. What do you think the min thickness ply I could get away with using epoxy FG cloth ? Aluminum is too expensive unless I can find scrap or remnants. Decking looks to be 3/4 on it right now.
OK, first off, I can only give some rough guidlines to go by. I'm over 3000 miles away from you and "know" only what I've seen of your project. You know your design, I really have no no clue to what your concept is. The way the original boat was built is the full width deck added stiffness to the hull. My assumption is you are going to recess the "cabin" into the hull some what. That will leave you with small side decks at the most if any at all. In any rate, you want to make the "deck height" The "shear" as it is known, as stiff as possible and will probably be attaching anything else you build to the deck. I'd make any "walking" surface 3/4" minimum and make it "Marine Grade" ply. 7 layers if you can get it. 11 is better. Marine means No Voids and waterproof glue. Without seeing more of your structure I'd advise you get some good books on boat building or find a working boatyard around you and hang out there and ask lots of questions. Looks like a fun project. Take your time. Like everything else you've done, do it right. Boat building can be 90% thinking and 10% building.
Camping on the water may be free, but, more and more lakes and access points are charging ramp and dock fees! I know two places that charge based on the amount of time you will be on the lake!!
Well, it turned into this project. After getting the wrong sails and having to send them back it gave me time to pause and think about what I really wanted. If I am going to go though all of the work of owning a sailboat it is going to be a catamaran for the speed, low draft and stability. I like mono hulls but it would have to be bigger and blue water capable if I am really going to put all the work into refitting one. For now I wanted a project I could camp in, trailer-able, use on the water and was safer for all 3 of us to travel in. It went to a good home and is helping me finance this project.
Thanks but it is actually bigger than the box camper by 12 ft. I'll show my latest sketch in the next video. It is to scale and looks like everything will fit.
I love watching your projects, they give me ideas, I too am a project person, I have to have something going on all the time. if i see something i like or have something that is similar to what i have but like the other design better (i'll modify mine). keep the videos coming brother, love them

Were you able to complete this and get it registered to put in the water
I've wanted to do the same thing. I look forward to following your build.

another sweet idea...will definitely be following this build project

Smart idea! I am looking forward to see this project! Greetings from Sweden
I'm looking forward to watching your build.
Great idea, looking forward to the build,😀

Love the sketch up of the second boat I am going to rebuild my pontoon and make it better for the river for next year.
Great project I am looking forward to more great videos. Like you I have wanted to do the same thing. I'm sure that the boat camper will be fantastic.

Cool cant wait to see the finished product

I'm not in the business but glad to help with any questions you may have. I'm just learning as I go.
On Roy's website he has a picture of a boat that used his plans for the cabin but it was built on a metal hull it looked pretty good. Looking forward to how your boat turns out
Awesome! :) I was looking at boat-a-home for a while as well. My only problem for me with the idea is that I don't really like the water haha.
Followed last build, will follow this 1, like how you go outside the box thinking
Все грамотно, зачем изобретать велосипед! Взял готовый корпус и на нем построил что хочешь! С меня лайк и подписка ;). Тоже хочу плавающий кемпер построить)))
Show me who has done it before and why not build it yourself.

Just brilliant, can't wait !! Just subbed. Seeya Rob
I have to to watch it ;) I can't wait to see what you come up with, going to be awesome.
Great idea for a build!
Great project!

Hi, I am 6 years late to the party but I love your project how can I see the finished boat?
I love it!! The photos are amazing and are getting us excited for the build. Why couldn't you buy an old rv and put it on the boat frame?
I did boat repair for a living for seven years and lived on my boat for 10. Get rid of ALL the old plywood. If it isn't bad now it will be bad in the future. Start with a clean slate!. Getting a permit to trailer wider loads is simple.
Hell ya brother that's gonna be awesome
Camping on the water may be free, but, more and more lakes and access points are charging ramp and dock fees! I know two places that charge based on the amount of time you will be on the lake!!
Try to find a local mfg plant that deals in aluminum. May find good scrap cheap. I love the way you think. Good luck with the boss🤣
for the new project why not make it easy get a small popup camper turn it sideways on the boat the bunks extend out over the water just an idea
Great idea but Im not a big fan of pop-ups or let me re phrase it. My wife is not a big fan of pop-ups.
build 2 ?
What happened to the sailboat?
Well, it turned into this project. After getting the wrong sails and having to send them back it gave me time to pause and think about what I really wanted. if you cannot lower the deck down to about water level, there is no point, it will be too tall on the trailer. Might as well build a dianes rose.
Clever.
I don't know, that looks too small to put all the things you want in it but it's your project, I hope it works out for you!
Thanks but it is actually bigger than the box camper by 12 ft. I'll show my latest sketch in the next video. It is to scale and looks like everything will fit.
do you talk these purchases over with the boss before you buy them?Lol
Shhh. I don't thinks she has noticed it in the back yard yet.... Yeah, she is not a big
fan until she sees some progress.
I love watching your projects, they give me ideas, I too am a project person, I have to have something going on all the time. if i see something i like or have something that is similar to what i have but like the other design better (i'll modify mine). keep the videos coming brother, love them
The race is on
Better goggle Pilmsoll Mark before you start adding weight to that boat.
Will do. Thanks
I wish you were my neighbor. Just finished my boat. Check it out on shanty boat.com. The H.M.S. Monkey Butt.
Jesus Christ! Turn the music down!
That blast of music at the beginning was rude dummy. Thumbs down.
When you put it together think light... For your walls use light skins on each side with a foam core... Have fun...
